Default A Tale of Two Kahrs

Two MK 9 Micro Stainless Kahrs. The one on the right I purchased almost two decades ago and is one of my primary CC guns, especially in warm weather. I installed an Elite trigger and spring years ago and after many rounds it functions perfectly, with I might add a better trigger pull than the original. It rides in a Bianchi 100 Pro, IWB with the spares in my pocket. The one on the left is an Elite 03 that I purchased recently. IMO these little guns are the most reliable and accurate small 9mm's available. More so than their less expensive Polymer frame brothers. That's not to denigrate Kahr's poly frame guns, but some of those have been known to have problems according to new gun dealers I've talked with. YMMV I keep the carry piece loaded with stuff from my stash of Black Talons.

Steel and wood Kahrs are very easy on the eyes.

I had a polymer frame PM9, all black. Great gun, until it wasn’t. I believe I probably shot the frame out of tolerance around 9000 rounds. After replacing the recoil spring and a trip to the factory the reliability just kept declining, likely due to stretching in the area of the slide stop hole. No factory support to fix this.

I also had a two-tone K40, soft shooter with.40S&W. Also a great gun, until it was wasn’t. The barrel chamber liner unscrewed from the barrel in a range session, jamming the breech open. I called the customer service line and they denied that was possible - “we use one-piece barrels”. I sent them a picture and they sent an RMA, as they were flat-out lying. They repaired the “one-piece” barrel.

I still enjoy the Kahr triggers, but I don’t consider them (1) reliable nor (2) adequately supported to be CCW. YMMV.

Out of curiosity, after how many rounds did the K40 have to go back?

Never in all these years have I had a problem with mine. Curious. Did your have land & groove or polygonal barrel?

W4 - both were polygonal barrels. Accurate.

PeteC - I don’t recall the total round count on the K40, but likely 1500 +/-total, so broken in but not worn down. When the polygonal barrel disassembled itself, I think was shooting 165gr .40S&W factory loads. Was upfront with the factory about that, as it was a little atypical load.

On the PM9, I shot it a lot. At least one high-count training course and lots of regular range sessions each year for at least four years. I replaced it with a Glock 26 + 19 and now have a spare to rotate in on the round count. Live and learn.

My intent is not to tear into Kahr - I really liked the form factor/size. The triggers were good - predictable, smooth and overall remarkable compared to other striker fired guns. They were market leaders at their introduction in my opinion. They also look great, especially W4’s above.

Unfortunately, being a two-time loser soured me enough to provide unvarnished truth when able. I don’t trust the design and their customer service is poor. FWIW, one of my local agencies even authorized them for personal officer purchase/ uniform carry for small handed females. That worries me.

It could be I just have a good one. I don't know the round count but it's a lot. I have shot it quite a bit because I carry it often.

I think you would be considered an outlier in the amount you practice with a carry gun.

What you said about the Kahr is almost a repeat of what a British army guy said about the Hi Power. They didn't last through the close protection training he did, so they went to Sigs.

Wilson Combat recommends replacing the recoil springs on short barrel guns (Officers Model, etc.) every 500 rounds. That's about 1911 types and the Kahr's dual spring system probably lasts longer. Having said that, 5000 rounds of 9mm in a barrel and spring that short (MK's) would put a lot of wear on the recoil springs. I can feel the difference between my old and new pistols.

Have had about 5 Kahrs over the years. Had trouble with all of them. The magazine springs are/were WAY too long. Clipping about a third of the coils always helped some, but was not a total fix.
When you pay north of five to six hundred dollars for a pistol, there should be no need to fire four or five boxes of ammo for a “break-in” period, as the manufacturer recommends.

My first true CCW 9mm was a Kahr CW9. Light weight. Thin. And a trigger like a double action revolver. It quickly became my choice for concealed carry. While I’ve never experienced problems, I went in to Cylinder and Slide in Fremont Nebraska one day and talked to the shop manager. They were doing a lot of work on Kahr’s. I had a little cash burning a hole in my pocket so I left the gun with them for one of their packages of modification. That made the gun even better. In the winter I use a Galco shoulder holster. I have an IWB and a DeSantis slide for hotter weather. Shoots great 100% reliable. Which is what I wanted.

Default Kahr

I have a K9 for about 10 years and around 3 thousand rounds never a jam, i had other Kahr pistols that i no longer own. PM9 was reliable & 380 had problems i was able to correct.
The K9 seems to have less problems than other kahrs as reported on the internet.
Very accurate and reliable in my limited experience.
I like steel guns but have a couple plastic guns also.
Yours look good.

I've got a K9 and a first Gen E9. Bought both used for real reasonable prices. I've had one significant problem between the 2 guns. I was shooting the E9 when the slide stop broke. The end that holds back the slide and the thumb grip area went flying.

Looking at the area that broke, the slide stop appeared to be MIM manufactured. I called Kahr, and they were happy to sell me a replacement. Their Customer Service did not ask if I was the original owner and I did not tell them I bought it used.

Otherwise, they both have been great.

Only have one Kahr.
It’s got a plastic frame.
9,000 rounds?
Works for me!
Hell will freeze over 3-4 times before anybody shoots it that much!

Yeah that stainless Kahr with the wood grips looks really classy!

I have my late father's Kahr K9... very early in production.. remember helping him break it in with some submachine gun ammo... had to take turns.. that was hot ammo.. it has had a bunch of flawless shooting since then.. but not much lately... I have a PM9 in rotation now.. no issues ever.. and I am the 3rd owner.. know the previous 2...

I will always post my personal opinion and experiences every time Kahrs are mentioned here.

The P380 is my oldest one @ 10yrs +, closely followed by my first PM9, then my PM45 and another PM9, (blackened w/CT Laser.)

I have never had any issues with any of them except the 45 which I shot my favorite lead hand load through. Bad idea. Kahr fixed it for free and it came back better with a factory lightened/tuned trigger. Great customer service at least for me back then.

I regularly shoot them all to keep proficient as one is usually with me. Granted I’m sure I don’t have 3000 + rounds through any of them. The Lothar polygonal barrels matched up with the great triggers and flawless reliability make me feel more than adequately protected. Maybe I just got lucky four times.

By the way a friend of mine had a Rohrbaugh, (not inexpensive,) that started to have issues. He contacted the company and he was told he had “over shot” it, with under 500 rnds. Hmm. This was a few years ago so maybe now they can stand up to required practice shooting.

Jim

In years passed, I've had a few Kahrs. Two E9s, 2 PM9s, a P9, and a PT45.
One of my PM9s had to go back for their recall/upgrade work, I forget the gist of it all. The PT45 had to go back twice. It was failing to detonate a couple brands of ammo consistently. The 2nd visit they figured out the chamber was cut too deeply.

FWIW I’ve had a P45 with a black ss slide for more than a decade, carrying it often in the warmer months (not many of those around here ), and have trained with it and shot quite a bit without issue. For all the disparaging things I’ve heard over the years about the brand, I figure either I got lucky or the bad rep has been overstated.
