As a kid I too was a fan of the TV show Combat. I wanted the German MP38/40.

luckily my dad was a gun guy... he shot combat pistol and upland bird hunted.. also did custom leatherwork for local leos & competitors.. so I had quite a varied and expensive wishlist... but one that recently popped back into mind was the Sig AMT.. not sure why it fascinated me so much.. but at least I had good taste... just wish wallet matched...

I was about age 8 when my favorite uncle went to Vietnam. I suspect that's why I wanted an M16.

Uncle Mike was less than enthused about my fascination with guns. He talked with me a lot about many life events including the decisions we make about hobbies such as guns ,cars, girls, etc.

Anyway, a few years ago I did get a super nice late 70s Colt SP-1 that finally scratched that itch.

I’ve been interested in guns for as long as I can remember. When I was little I had a arsenal of toy guns, and carried one everywhere I went. Even if I was told not to I’d have a small gun hidden in a pocket. I was very adept at the concealed carry of toy guns, useful training for later life. I was also a voracious reader of gun magazines. If someone asked me I could rattle off a long list of guns I was going to own when I was older.

Many years later I can say that I own almost all the guns I said I would, plus many more. I’ve got a bunch of 1911’s, dozens of .38’s and .357’s, a Luger, P-38, PPK, SAA with ivory grips, M-1’s, etc. There is only one major missing item, a Thompson gun. Sadly I don’t think I’ll be getting one, not on what the gov’t pays.

First gun I remember fantasizing was a Luger. So naturally the obtainable version I really wanted was the Stoeger 22LR "Luger" that I saw advertised in the back of Popular Mechanics. I ended up getting a Stoeger about 5 or 6 years ago, and an actual German Luger about 3 years ago. Since then I also picked up an Erma 67 which is a better 22LR copy of the real thing.

I’m glad I started this thread. It’s really fun reading the replies and I’m glad I wasn’t the only kid who dreamed about getting “that” special one.

I’m surprised that not one person as a kid never wanted a HK MP5. I was older but the first time I ever saw one, (again in a firearms museum,) I thought it was one of the most beautiful yet scary snastie firearm I had ever seen. I knew I’d have to get one someday and I eventually did.

Of course it’s “stamped” and legal, (for now,) but I’m still cautious taking it out/running it.

I saw the movie, The Final Option and Die Hard and thought that the MP5s in those movies were cool!

I wanted one, the closest I could get to an MP5 was an SP89. One of the LGSs had one, it was during the AWB, and I was young and could barely afford to live on my own. Later on, a buddy had one and well it wasn't what I had dreamed it to be - mainly because it wasn't an MP5.

My first gun was a JC Higgins 22 auto rifle that my uncle promised me provided I painted all the fence posts on my grandparents property, I think it was 1/2 acre parcel. My father said I wasted too much ammo because it was an automatic. When I was 13 I got a Remington 572 pump and went through the hunter safety program. At the time a neighbor showed me a Nebraskaland magazine that I later signed up to receive and always wanted to go hunt there. In it were articles about pheasant and other upland game bird hunts. Because of reading the magazine I lusted for a 870 Wingmaster shotgun, and the 572 had similar lines so I pretended it was a 870!

I did, especially the MP5SD (*cough*NavySealsmoviewithCharlieSheen*cough*), but I've always been more of a handgun guy, so didn't really give it much thought. Never seen one in person, let alone fire one. However, at a training course I attended one of the co-instructors, a SWAT officer from a local PD, brought out a MP5K and gave a demonstration with it. That was really cool. He said he'd fired a MP5SD and that it sounded like a slap when shooting subsonic rounds.

When I was a kid in the 50s, we were all small game hunters. I had and still have a Winchester 67 .22 and a 37 20 gauge. It seemed I always needed the other one when a great opportunity presented itself. I learned the solution was a Savage 24 in 22/20 gauge so I worked as a bag boy in a grocery store, saved some money and bought one. It was the answer to a prayer, a great shooter, and dropped my first deer with a "pumpkin ball" slug. I still have it.

My next bag boy savings were spent much later for a lemon yellow 1956 Chevy 2 dr for the kings ransom of $600. Unfortunately, I didn't keep it.
I saw one for sale at a car show 2 years ago for $30,000+.

Flandreau South Dakota, sat a New in the Box Lever, on the counter,
just always wanted it.
Yeah, I got the Remington Nylon bug also. The black lever action Trail Rider rifle is one of the rarest animals out there, but I did find one in perfect condition, which I treasure. I now have almost all of the Nylon series - prices are almost untouchable now, but I started early to put together my collection. Here's a shot of the two you coveted. Keep searching! They are still found here and there, but crazy expensive now.

MP5SD thoroughly covered here, as usual, by Ian. Always tough to appreciate a suppressor through a microphone, but I think he does a good job with his demonstration.

I grew up without a Dad and where my interest in firearms came from is a total mystery. My Mom did her best to indulge me, enrolling me in every NRA sponsored riflery course she could find. She even allowed me a Mossberg bolt action .22. in middle school.

But I really, really wanted a Marlin 39....and of course a Smith & Wesson revolver. Once I turned 18 I got the revolver on my own.

I too was impressed by these German burp guns. A friend of mine owns this MP40, and I was privileged to have fired it. Very controllable - just like spraying a garden hose.

I had no idea that the toy I used to love was based on a real pistol!

It was a pre-airsoft airsoft gun. They weren't that powerful, but they were fun! They also had version that shot small plastic disks. There also was an 870 looking shotgun version.

I watched alot of reruns with my dad as kid. Rat patrol was a favorite of ours. An M2 50cal was a must have as a kid. I also NEEDED a BAR and a Thompson smg. All thing that my mother just couldn’t understand.

As a kid, I always wanted Sgt. Saunders' Thompson SMG, like some of the other Combat! viewers here. Not a fan at that time of Lt. Hanley's M1 Carbine -- it was too little -- or the M1s carried by other squad members like Littlejohn and Caje or replacements-of-the-week who didn't last more than an episode or two. Kirby's BAR was intriguing, but the darn thing looked like it would be awfully heavy to tote around. When the guys had to use their 1911s, they seemed too undergunned for my tastes.

I vaguely remember getting a Mattel model of the Thompson that could be loaded with rolls of caps, but the lack of a full-auto option was disappointing.

Apparently the 1903A1 had some appeal for me because one of my favorite memories of my maternal grandfather is the day he bought me a full size plastic one that I spotted in a display at the 5 & 10. I brought it to him while he waited in line to pay for whatever he was buying that day, and to my surprise (he was kind of a gruff old guy), he nodded when I placed it on the counter. The bolt action would even flip an empty cartridge out of it!

My little Sears .410 -- my first real gun -- was a bolt action, and I thought I had won the lottery that Christmas.

I got a Czechoslovakian air pistol when I was 12, but my grail back then was a Sheridan Blue Streak.
Last week at my LGS I spotted one on the counter, old and beaten, hey Ross how much for the Sheridan? "Not sure if it even works, I don't deal with used air rifles, yours today for the low low price of 'please take it home, please'".
Took it home, cleaned it up, got it running, could use seals, found a rebuild kit online (it's in the mail), only took 50+ years, but I got one.

Also lusted for a Model 39 and a 2.5" 19/66, have them all now, but I carry a 640-1.

A Walther PP/PPK because of James Bond. I finally got one in the mid-80s and it was a piece of junk. Worst pistol I have ever owned. No amount of work, by me or a great gunsmith, could get that thing to be reliable. FTF, FTE, Stovepipes, etc. You name it and it taught me about them. Finally, after a LOT of effort I sold it to a guy at my range who wanted a "Bond Gun" - I fully disclosed all its failings and he still bought it from me. It took me 30 years to try another Walther - my PPS - and I am now a BIG Walther fan. Never a PPK again though........

Thanks to Samson manufacturing I got to fulfill a '80s childhood A-TEAM dream. I've had the mini-14 for 8years or so, but when I saw they were going to make the original Ruger factory folding stocks, I couldn't pass it up. They say they are actually better than the originals, as far as materials go. Iv'e always loved the looks of them, but I hate to admit, It shoots better with the black plastic stock.

My dream gun as a dirt poor farm boy was a Winchester Model 62 .22 Pump Rifle. The general store had one for sale for years but no one in the area could afford it.

When I was in my teens my dad and I shot a lot of trap.

I wanted a Browning Broadway like nobody's business! We'd go to gun shows (for all sorts of gun stuff) and when I'd see one on a table I had to make sure I didn't drool.

I can thank my childhood reading of Gun Digest, Guns Magazine, Shooting Times, various factory catalogs, and Hunting for Handgunners for a massive want list.

If I think back to the first ones that I remember telling myself that I wanted -

I wanted a Marlin 60 or a 10/22 - my dad got me the 60 after months of pleading.

I remember my first Guns Magazine and the cover pic of the then new 640 in .357, as well as the add for a Kahr K9.

Still waiting for the day I come across both of them locally.

When I lived in Germany I got see them up close. Twice, the Polizei stuck one up against my belly. I had long hair and a big beard. This was during the Bader Meinfof terrorist times, the German cops were not messing around. Two man foot patrols, each guy had an HK pistol. One guy had the MP5 and the other had a big mean dog. Ah the good old days.

S&W Model 27 was my most wanted Handgun when I was a kid. But after that, I wanted everything else. Lol.

My Dad made my brother and I a few guns out of wood. Here is one of his MAC-10's. I can't find the UZI he also made but I'm sure it's in the shed somewhere.

It was a pre-airsoft airsoft gun. They weren't that powerful, but they were fun! They also had version that shot small plastic disks. There also was an 870 looking shotgun version.
I tried to look for the picture yesterday, but couldn't find it. I had one of these that shot the discs when I was 5 or 6 back in the mid 70s. My dad had picked up a real leather holster for it at a gun show, and I carried it on a belt everywhere I went. Somewhere I have a family photo snapshot taken in our back yard and I am wearing it.
I also had a plastic .45 that I carried in a real GI holster and pistol belt with a canteen. That holster about hung to my knee.
Never owned a Whitney Wolverine, but a shiny new .45 Colt Combat Commander was the first handgun I bought when I turned 21.

Nice. My dad never made me any wooden guns, but I had cousins I was friends with and there father made them some great looking ones including an M16, M60, and M41A pulse rifle.

I get the feeling I'm a fair bit younger than most the crowd here, so a lot of my child hood gun fantasies stem from 80s and 90s action movies and mid 90s video games.

Resident Evil gave me a thing for pump shotguns, and hi powered hand guns.

Loved the 870s from Romancing the Stone, and Dawn of the Dead.

I obviously wanted the MK23 Sodom, and Famas from Metal Gear solid, and the USP 45 from the sequel.

Han Solos DL44, and the Colonial Marines M41a Pulse rifle where high on the list as well.

Michael Biehns Ithacas from Terminator and Aliens.

#1 gun of desire was probably the MP5. From countless cool games and movies, but I think Stargate was where it first really caught my eye.

When I was a youth in the 60's every outdoor magazine had a page advertising mail order gun sales from Klein's Sporting Goods in Chicago. My firearms interest was centered on my Dad's 760 Remington pump in .30-06 Spfld., so I naturally wanted a 742 Remington semi-auto in .30-06 Spfld. I could have had one mailed to my doorstep if not for the $142 barrier to entry. Klein's fueled much firearms lust with their full page spreads of new and surplus, including Lee Harvey's $14.95 Carcano mail order purchase. I recall tons of Lugers that, judging from the prices, nobody particularly wanted.

When I was a kid, about twelve, one of my dad's friends had a .444 Marlin, and I wanted one real bad.

I've owned two since then.

My Grandfather had one of those old glass front gun cabinets you used to see about everywhere. There were a dozen or so guns in there, but there was one I always stared at. I knew what it was, but the words meant nothing to me really back then.

It was a 20 gauge Parker, side by side. I had heard the story, how my grandfather bought it from Watkins-Cottrell hardware store in Richmond in the late 20's or so. It seems to me he said he paid $119.00 or so for it, which was a LOT of money then I suppose. He said then he sent it back to the factory to have automatic ejectors installed. I know I never fired that gun. I don't think I ever even held it, but it started a lifelong love for Parker shotguns.

I've owned a couple of 12 gauge Parker Trogan's but they weren't what I wanted really so I ended up selling them. I've had a couple of other 20 gauge doubles, but they weren't what I really wanted.

I came close once. I had a Parker Trogan on layaway and was going to pick it up. I needed to hit the men's room desperately, so I had my wife go to the counter and tell them I was here to pick up the Parker. Off I went one way, she went the other.

When I came back she was holding a shotgun. From a distance, I didn't think it looked right, but I took it from her, and I still didn't think it looked the same. I don't remember a beavertail...I thought the stock was darker. Wait, this one is a 20, and it's ONLY $500?...Oh wait...That's $5000.00. GULP...Here, wrong gun. Put this back before I scratch it or get attached to it.

Still wasn't like PaPa's gun.

I also wanted a Thompson, like a lot of others, for the same reason...Combat. I did have a Mattel version, but that's as close as I ever came.

Not my picture.

I had the exact same one. I think I still have it in a box of my old toys.

The discs didn't go very far 10-15 feet if you're lucky.

I also remember having a couple of these cap guns around the house which may also be why I wanted to collect snubbies.

Put pink cerakote on it and you've created my 9 year old daughter's dream gun.

She's shot the semi MP5 and does well with it, but she wants full-auto.

I was a kid of the '50's and somehow I got impressed by Mossberg .22 rifles. There was a model that had a foregrip that folded down! i lusted long and hard for that one and have yet to own one. First gun was a Llama 9 m/m that somewhat resembled a 1911. Paid a weeks pay, $20 for it about 1958 or so. Only the first of many that have passed through my hands, I seldom sell one but had plenty go missing in my early days due to a family member that was an addict.

Default Guns wanted as a kid

My father had a model 62 Winchester which I shot pleanty over the years. I still have it and several of my grandkids want it. That will be my sons problem. A local gun shop close to my house growing up, had a S & W model 1917, in his case. The front was pointed towards the front of the case. I used to think that the hole in the bbl was hugh. I always wanted to buy one. When I got to be around 40 I got my wish. The gun looks almost new and it has the lanyard ring too. Still have it and I am 74 now. Still enjoy shooting and collecting as does my son and some of my grandkids. A great hobby.

I recall having a 1911 fascination as a boy. Even got mom to buy me one of those hi-quality blank-firing replicas from Japan, through a retailer in Virginia, IIRC. The Gold Cup was my grail-piece back then, LOL.

According to the inflation calculator, that would be right about $1,800 in today's money.
