My Favorite Al Mar
As many of you know Al Mar was a Special Forces soldier who served multiple tours in Vietnam/South East Asia with SF/ MACV-SOG (Studies and Observation Group). If you don't know what SOG is, look it up. You will find it interesting. After his military career he settled in Oregon designing and making knives.
This is my favorite of my Al Mar knives. On the right side of the blade is the Special Forces emblem and the MACV-SOG emblem (without a CCN, CCC, CCS designation) You won't find this one for sale every day.

I really dislike the dip in the blade spine, which I also despise on the Randall Model 1. But that's an individual reaction, and that knife is probably quite collectible.
Mar was better known for his nice folders. Got any?

I've got a few. One in particular is pretty special.. Al Mar logo on one side and Balisong logo on the other. It is an early collaboration (auto).
I remembered I had a thread a couple years ago with that Al Mar-Balisong (Benchmade) auto, and some Eagles, Ultra Lights, etc.

My father has the same knife with the same markings bought personally from Al Mar. He has a number of his knives, and they are all well made. I only have one, an old style SERE folder.

I have never seen another one but I know they are out there, in very limited numbers. I used to go to Portland 4-5 times a year. I never got to meet Al himself, but Portland is a great place to find his knives, especially low number first issue blades.

Sorry for the lousy pictures, but they are all that I have. It's hard to tell for sure because AMK made a lot of variations, but I think it's the same. I think the one below it is Al Mar's blued reproduction of the SOG "Recon" knife.
He also another Al Mar "Recon" Knife that has SF and SOG markings.
I believe it is a reproduction of this knife, which is an original SOG "Recon" Knife.
The Al Mar is a lot higher quality than the original.

Now that's a pretty cool bunch of Al Mars, etc. Your SF/MACV-SOG knife is like mine. The others are stunning. Thanks for showing them.
