I am planning on buying a Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) 1911 from their program and one of the requirements says, to the effect of 'be a member of a CMP group or sponsored organization'.

Is there a group that you recommend? I do not have any near me...and I'd like to support a group that the members here contribute to.

Any recommendations, preferably that I can join online? I'd like to submit my form shortly after the start date, if possible. Thank you in advance.:)

If you are a member of an established range or gun club, its very possible that they are a NRA affiliate. That's what I use. ;)

Veterans can be members of the VFW, DAV, American Legion etc.

This post just saved me a hassle. I purchased 2x M1s from the CMP while I was active duty. I am planning on putting a package in for round 2 of the 1911s. I assumed I was good as a retiree. Reading the rules, apparently that only applies to National Guard.

If you have a military ID showing your retired status that counts for citizenship proof, an affiliated organization and proof of marksmanship training participation, as I see the rules.

I might just have to call them to clarify. From their website:

"In addition to shooting clubs, the CMP also has several special affiliates. Membership in these organizations satisfies our requirement for purchase. These special affiliates include:

- Congressionally chartered veterans' organizations such as the VFW, AL, DAV, MCL, etc.
- U.S. Military services (active or reserves)
- National Guard, to include retirees"

For military services it only lists active or reserves. It is a moot point as I just joined the VFW. That will cover it.

I sincerely appreciate the feedback everyone, thank you. Keep the suggestions coming as it is likely to help many others.

CMP lists by state approved organizations that meet the purchase requirements of membership required for your package submission. This link allows search by state.
Clubs - Civilian Marksmanship Program

I'm not guessing at this, I bought a gun in round one.

For those who plan to submit a package for round two of the CMP 1911 sale I remind you of that famous written exam. The exam that the instructor told you to read every word prior to answering any question. The final phrase said to sign your name and turn it in without marking any answers. Treat the CMP package like that exam. There are no do overs, no grace period, no corrections, no incomplete packages. I had an opportunity to visit about some of these issues during my purchase conversation.
Postmarked one day early or one day late....you are out without notice.
There are many folks left in line from round one, they are up next.
Remember everything you include might not be used for nearly a year so when your time/turn comes, if you or your FFL are unreachable/unfindable you are out. There will be a background check, fail that...you're out.
My number was 13,000 plus. There were 8000 guns. For me to get a gun 5000+ packages had to be passed over. Pay attention to every detail as you prepare your package, mail it on time; then wait.

They got a second shipment of at least 8000 guns last September, so they were able to get to 13k (and ultimately to 18k) without tossing a lot of packets. Since they are moving into another round I suspect they have even more now. CMP is being very cagey about the number of guns they have on hand.

One thing that caught a lot of people off guard was there can only be one packet per envelope. If a guy submitted his packet as well as one for his wife and kid in the same mailer, they all got tossed.

People get intimidated by the "hoops", but it really isn't that hard, and the final result is worth the effort.

It's not nearly that harsh in reality. As said, a second batch of pistols brought the total available way up, there aren't 5,000 people who got skipped for mistakes.
They (the CMP) apparently learned some from the first round and changed the process a bit for the second round. They're not even requesting the FFL info be included with the packet this time. People in the first round have had the opportunity to correct mistakes and re-submit expired /out of date paperwork. They'll leave a message and email if you don't pick up the phone first ring when they call.
Their goal is to sell a gun to raise funds, not reject packets.

Thanks,I took the advice posted above and joined the Garand Collectors Association. Should have done it sooner who knows how long it will take to get the membership info to send in with the application.
