The cheapest M1911 style pistol I have purchased (so far) was a Thompson Auto Ordnance. The ones made today are actually good, but the one I bought was in the late 1980's. Those old Auto Ord's were made of some surplus military parts and lots of investment cast parts. The one I had was almost all investment casting. It was unreliable and lacked accuracy. I turned it into a learning project and ultimately, every piece except the firing pin, slide stop, receiver, mainspring housing assembly, plunger tube assembly, and stocks were replaced, making it the most expensive Auto Ordnance pistol in history.

Worse 1911 I ever owned! A.O. Got it off G.B. Ran terrible. The only G.B. seller issue I ever had. I changed some parts and got it running decent. I sold it! Bob

Unfortunately these Norincos were only imported for 9 or 10 years before being banned by the Clinton small arms ban from certain countries. Very well made, a great performer, a favorite platform for custom jobs, and a true mil-spec 1911. I am fortunate to own this early import.

Oldster,

This pistols were very sought after in the late 80's and early 90's by IPSC shooters. They were the basis for many IPSC Comp Guns. Have shot them and consider them on par with any good M1911 platform. You are fortunate to own the one you have, enjoy it.

Will agree with you on that about the AO M1911. Maybe they have worked out some of the bugs by now (I hope so). The one that I handled was junk and only good for a paperweight.

I had the ATI full size (I forget all the little numbers & letters) but I never had anything to compare it to. My son has it now. It shoots very good and the only problem I ever had was racking the first hollow point out of the magazines unless I did it with authority. Ball ammo worked fine. The nice part was that if I saved brass, all I had to do was untuck my shirt, as most of the hot brass went down my back! Boony hat solved that!

You think hot brass down your shirt is bad? Try hot brass making its way over the top of your shooting glasses and coming to a stop on your cheek, just below your eye. This event occurred during a USPSA match stage and there is money and/or plaque at stake, so no stopping to clear the offending brass. Yep, happened to me, only once, learned to wear hat after that incident.

Since I learned shooting autos in the Corps, having a hat on was a given. Where we got hot brass was on the rifle range and usually in the sitting, kneeling or prone positions. Always it seemed they went down the neck of your shirt and down on your back and laid there and burned. Nowadays I still wear a hat and glad I do as I have a M1911 that about i round out of a mag lands squarely on top of my head!

I had a similar hat inducing event. I took a 45 ACP case to the center of my forehead in the middle of a stage, mouth on and hard enough to draw blood.

In 80s Charles Daily was house brand of Outdoor Sports HQ in Dayton. Bought CD 1911s one time, unit pricing 10-12? I forget. Last batch I bought, had nothing but problems with them. Switched to Llama for low end 45 and they were worse.

Never owned a CD pistol.

I have owned several Llama pistols. .22LR, .380, 9MM and .45 in the M1911 configuration and never had a problem with them. Probably the luck of the draw.

This is the last one that I put together. Shoots well enough for this old guy. It is a 1958 .38 Super frame with a .45 Slide and barrel.

A friend and I went to a small club nearby and shot in a fun match today. He was shooting his Gold Cup and shot my RIA FS in 9mm. The RIA worked perfectly. Only downside was I lost 97 rounds of brass.

Of all the spares that I have an extractor was the one I don't have. Will stop by the gun shop to see if they have one.

You can swap from one of your other 1911s to try. There are videos on you tube on how to tune. Trace it on paper with a pencil before you alter so you see the results.
