Old School with the New Service
Thanks to the members who "schooled" me some on Colt's New Service, but mine arrived today.
This is a circa 1920 Commercial New Service in .45 Colt. Seller advertised as 98% original finish. They weren't lying. I've read that this model, in production from 1899 to 1939, was Colt's largest revolver made up until the introduction of the Anaconda .44 Magnum in the late 1990s. When you hold one of these you'll immediately appreciate that fact. It's a BIGGUN (pun intended).
Fit and finish on this model is amazing, fully reflecting the level of craftsmanship coming out of Hartford in the inter war years. Have no idea what it would cost to produce like this today, only pretty sure I wouldn't be able to afford it.
Too rainy this week to get out to dance, and I'm back working tomorrow, but...vacation starts right after Memorial Day and that's enough time to round up more ammo too.
Life is good.

Another view, comparing for size of N.S. against S&W M&P 1905 4th Change 6" .38 Special from 1926.
And comparing with a 1946 N frame, 38/44 Heavy Duty.
It's a big honkin revolver.

I am so envious. I had one of those and had to sell it when I lost my job in 2009.

They are a terrific Colt revolver. Last month I traded into this RNWMP 1919 NS, one of my grail guns.

Very nice! When I lived in Canada, the RCMP and RNWMP marked New Service revolvers were very much in demand. Way back then (1980s), they would command $700-900.
Nice Score!

I love the New Service. Its a big, no nonsense gun with a purpose - killing bandits, and their horses if necessary.
I have two, and am always on the lookout.

Some new additions ...
The Shooting Master is a 38 Special from about 1935. Bought it for a pretty good price because the cylinder is Turnbull refinished from a fair number of years back - seller told me up front, I'd have never known otherwise.

An early New Service in 45 Colt, picked up at the Reno Gun Show shortly before the close downs.

Each carries the Pachmayr grip adapter. Would love to have something a bit better but no BKs fit and I don't have the patience for Tylers.

Here’s a few more, some are nicer looking, others not. The 7.5 up front is very nice.

I was just curious, is the sight picture with the Colt shark fin better than the S&W half moon? The only Colt revolver I've ever shot was a nice 60's vintage Officer's match .22 that a friend was trying to sell me. Nice gun I just decided I didn't want to jump down the Colt rabbit hole.

The Colt is "worse ", but not because of the front sight. The rear sight is the older style "pinch frame", is a tiny groove, and it makes for a challenging alignment. I am anticipating being able to hold a fine bead, but you have to work at it a little.
The Smith is a wider opening and the front sight just seems to naturally align. For me anyway. The pictured 38/44 Heavy Duty is a VERY accurate revolver.
Haven't had the time to crank up the Colt yet. But that mystery is about to be solved soon.
