It is my understanding that 22 mag and 22LR both are a 1:16 twist rate. I haven any experience with 22mag, but a friend showed me targets from 3 he was shooting. A S&W, a High Standard, and a Taurus. The Taurus was a 4" barrel, nearly new gun, but groups were poor and numerous keyholes. Shot at 10 yards, about 4" groups and probably 75% of the rounds at least partially sideways. The S&W and High Standard both shot nicely.

Would it make sense that a higher velocity, and short barrel may be causing this? The bore is good, clean and crisp rifling, crown looks fine. B/C gap is minimal, maybe in the .003 -.004 range.

Have 22 mags ever been made with other than 1:16?

What else should we be looking for?

Please educate me as well because I thought the "twist rate" is in the firearm and not the ammo. I am also naive enough to believe that barrel length affects bullet trajectory.

The rate of twist is in the barrel, but what I am asking is does the increased velocity of the mag in the same twist rate (1:16) have a negative effect on accuracy? With center-fire calibers, as you use heavier and faster bullets you get better accuracy with faster rate of twist. The original .223 was I believe 1:14 wit the 50-55 gr bullets. The newer loading in the 60-70 grain bullets shoot better in the 1:7 to 1:10 twist rate.
