Notches obviously. Now we know why the original owner wanted it gone

They are suppose to stop blood and direct it to drip off at that point instead of running down onto the handle causing slipperiness.

If I'm not mistaken, that knife design is called a roach belly.
I like it.

If that were a khukri, the notch would have symbolic meaning.

Or maybe not. The little monogram gives some traditional beliefs but concludes that they're there to cause blood to drip off, etc. Just as noted above.

I've always believed they were there for looks and kind of doubt the blood drip theory. I've read a few things that say on the kukri it's tradition and nobody really knows why it's done. The real purpose or meaning has been lost through time.

Interesting. It did not occur to me to think of that design having a specific name. This one was a gift to me from the guy who designed the knife and made the sheath.

A notch at the end of the sharpened edge is usually called a choil. It makes it possible to easily sharpen the entire edge without getting into the transition of the blade to the thicker steel past the grind where the scales attach. In this case I believe the extra embellishment is mostly an expression of the blade makers art. Nice knife and a perfect size for daily carry. The greatest compliment you can pay to a knife maker is to carry and use his blade.

I got one exactly like it, guy in Indiana makes those he uses drift wood that washes up on shore at the lake for the handles. Mine says { J. Bundy on the left side of the blade } you have to look real hard to see it...........................................M*

An exceptionally handsome knife. Thank you for sharing.

As total speculation, the undefined "notches" in the rear of the blade look as though the maker could've had the initials VVC, hence VCV as monogram.
