A "Colt Combat Elite" has come up for sale in my area. It is listed as being manufactured in 1986. My research tells me that was the first year of production for these. From the photos, it appears the trigger, hammer, mag release and mainspring housing have been changed.

The seller is asking $1,000 and is open to some trades. If the mods were done by a professional, is $1,000 fair?

The grip safety would have been a rat tail originally and the grips were changed too.No idea on value
This one is all original (the rubber factory grips are stashed away)Some came with a standard hammer and others with the commander hammer

Everyone has their opinions. Mine is keep looking and find a original Series 70 Gold Cup and buy it. Series 80's not as good as a Series 70. But you know what they say about opinions..........

Have used the one pictured to shoot several different combat shoots. It did well if the loose nut behind the trigger did.

arjay nailed it. I had two, one I bought new when they first came out and looked just like his. I bought another a few years later from the original owner, a friend, that he bought new after mine. It had the commander hammer and he had put Colt wood grips with the nickel medallions in them.

The funny thing is that Colt just released another Government two-tone that looks exactly like the original CE but with wood grips with gold medallions. Model number is O1911C-SS-TT-E.

Saw one in a local shop a couple of weeks ago, priced at $899+ tax/fees.

If memory serves, Commander hammers came on some CEs, but the grip safety, trigger and mag release are definitely not original.

Fortunately, these are all easily fixed, since the frame wasn't ground for the grip safety.

IMHO, $1000 for a Combat Elite in decent shape is probably a good buy in this market. A little searching would probably turn up appropriate stock replacement parts for not a lot of money.

I don’t do series 80s. It’s not because of the design change it was turning point in quality of Colt 1911s. I don’t do new model Rugers either, again not because of design, fit & finish. The other models of Ruger guns have also come under the Bean Counter Curse, but not all at same time. I do not under stand why a company that has a sales leader, messes with them. It’s because it’s not gun people running the show.
