I have had nothing but good experience with my three Rossi 92 guns. I have an older model SRC in 357 Mag and a beautiful newer octagon barrel case-hardened short rifle in 44 Mag. I also have a new Ranch Hand mare's leg in 45 Colt. The SRC is one of my top knocking around/plinking long guns and is a real favorite with my kids - even the grown-up ones.

Back on topic, there is obviously a high demand for .357 lever guns of all brands, if the OP has a chance to nab that one I'd say jump on it.

I think a Rossi '92 in .327 magnum would be super cool as well.
I heard a girl interviewed on NPR a couple months ago talking about the stress of going to school and having to worry about school shootings.

There have been 15 people killed and 61 people injured in school related shootings in the US in 2021. Looking at the data, it appears a significant number of the “school” shootings occurred near a school, such as a drive by shooting near a school or a shooting in a parking lot, or stray rounds that from off campus hit a student on campus. If you add in the shootings at ball games after regular school hours the majority of “school” shootings occur at times and places other than in a school with classes in session.

But let’s just go with 15 killed and 61 injured *out of 48.1 million students nation wide*. That’s a .000158% chance of being killed or injured in a shoot shooting.

To add more perspective, on average 128 students are killed in school bus accidents every year. That’s still decimal dust, but twice the rate of school shooting related injuries and 8 times the rate of school shooting related fatalities.

Yet I didn’t hear a peep out of the student interviewed about living in fear of riding the school bus.

The whole point here is that it is indeed schools creating a culture of fear based on literally almost non existent gun violence. It’s not just the schools either, but also the occasional mis guided local PD with a woody over the idea of doing an active shooter drill.

I’m not real sympathetic given that I grew up during the Cold War in a state chock full of missile silos and a SAC B-52 base. I understood from a pretty early age that if I ever saw our missiles going up, I see Soviet missiles coming down about 30 minutes later.

We did duck and cover drills in schools, but by then the schools were smart enough to address them as part of the usual severe weather drills as well and downplayed the whole nuclear apocalypse angle.

They need to do the same thing with active shooter drills and frankly they need to be upfront about the incredibly low probability,it’s if it ever actually occurring, rather than treating it as an almost inevitable occurrence.

——-

Owning both .45 Colt and .357 Magnum Model 92s I’m firmly in the camp that less is more and that .357 Mag is far more practical and far more effective than .45 Colt or .44 Magnum in a Model 92.

And I’d also love to see one in .327 Federal Magnum.

Just curious but what definition of "more effective" would you apply to conclude that a 357 magnum rifle is more effective than a 44 magnum rifle? 45 Colt, I can see that maybe, but 44 magnum?

So then you'd choose a 357magnum over a 44 magnum for bear protection?

And there you have it, a Bear Gun Thread!

I too own 92's by Rossi in both 357mag and 45 Colt and have owned a Browning B-92 in 44 Mag. Against Big Bears? 44 would be preferd, but since 44 mag is no longer an option, I'll take 45 Colt standard loading over 357mag! I'll Buffalo Bore over standard, for bears.

For the Silver Bears and Polar bears, I go for the hot loads in my 1886 Browning! When you care to use the very best: 45-70, 400grains at 2150fps! Not a 92, but it is THE Big Brother!

Ivan,

Not many polar bears here in Florida. When you find one, Sea World gets upset if you shoot one!

Speaking of school safety drills, when I was a kid in Hawaii in the early and mid '50's, we had air raid drills. Right behind my elementary school at Barber's Point, there was an abandoned air strip, with these concrete half dome shelters designed to protect fighters and other planes from an air attack, something that had happened just a little over a decade earlier.

So at the bell, we would run across the concrete and crouch down at the rear of the shelters, as if we were under air attack.

Just one of those exciting experiences of my childhood. Once, at that school, a police offer came and talked about some safety thing and I disagreed, politely, with him. I wasn't obnoxious, it was just that what he was saying didn't seem right to me. So... he had my lie down just in behind the rear wheel of his police car while he revved up the motor, trying to prove his point. I just layed there until he got out and told me to get up and get back with the other kids.

If that happene nowadays, I would be in the news.

all the best.. NAM VET

I have the Puma in .454 (which have since been rebranded as Rossi). It shoots both .454 and 45 colt just fine. Mine has both the side loading gate and the tube loading option. They should make them all that way.

The 45 colt can easily handle "ruger/TC" loads. Same receiver and barrel. Could easily take a bear.

Had a number of R92 rifles over the years. Some worked perfectly and some were miserable. The older Rossi rifles without the safety worked fine with any ammo.

Currently, I have a Marlin 1894 in 44 Magnum.

Any lever rifle can be fussy about what it will feed. Your rifle will tell you what it likes. The cowboy cast bullets are made for the lever rifles and will work OK most of the time. You may find exceptions, as I did.

Get the stevesgunz video. Well worth the money.

JMHO.

Frankly, today, I would get the Henry. USA made and they back up their products.

Check the parts availability before buying the Rossi.

My reference point was relative to deer sized game out to 150 yards.

The .44 Magnum does have more energy and will maintain that 600 ft pound threshold out to about 240 yards. That compares to about 160 yards for the .45 Colt and .357 Magnum.

Where it comes off the rails is accuracy. In my experience with the Rossi Model 92 rifles and carbines, the rifles are more accurate than the carbines and the .357 Magnum is significantly more accurate in either of them than the .45 Colt or .44 Magnum. In addition, the harder you push the .4s the works the accuracy tends to be, and that’s most likely an artifact of both recoil and barrel harmonics. Those .4 bore barrels get pretty thin and recoil starts becoming a bit stout.

Having a more energy and momentum, even a lot more, doesn’t matter when you miss the target entirely, or hit it outside the vitals. That makes the .357 Magnum more practical and more effective out to 150 yards.

On bear where the shot will be 50 yards or less, the .44 Mag and 32,000 psi loaded .45 Colt rounds will be a lot more effective, roughly 1320-1340 ft pounds versus 1070 ft pounds. (But also far short of a .45-70.)

Originally wanted the 24in octagon barrel, but just never committed. Ended up with a blued 20in round barrel instead.

Action was slicked up by prior owner, follower changed to a metal/brass? one, stock was oiled and a peso inlayed into the butt. It feeds reliably and more accurate than I'm capable of ....... absolutely love this rifle

Mine is a 20" .357 and its about 8 years old and has the safety but that doesn't bother me and its one of my favorite guns. Everyone who shoots it does very well with the factory sights, and my men's group from church took a retreat to the country and we had a lot of fun trying to hit a small white rock on a dirt hill at 200 yards with .38 Special ammo. We were shooting standing, leaning against a post and you had to aim about 8 feet above the rock and you could see the dust kick up and I'm not sure if we hit the rock or not but we came within inches many times.

Well reasoned answer. So essentially when you say "more effective" you'd add the qualifier "within their respective ranges" and maybe "up to animals of a certain size."
Makes sense. For a shorter range deer rifle I can see where the 357 would have some significant advantages.

off this topic, but since I was a teen, I have wanted, almost lusted for a first generation Ruger 44 mag carbine, to match my 1965 1022. By now, I have been able to acquire every firearm I have wanted. No plans for anymore. But a 44 mag carbine would complete my collection. Just can't seem to financially justify it. I don't hunt, and don't worry about bears on my porch, but something about that discontinued Ruger just keeps calling me. I know of an early rifle, near unfired, but I just can't do the $2K it would cost me. My son has a Win 94, so I can enjoy that when I want (I reload for it too).

Firearms for me at this point in my life are for enjoyable shooting and just collecting. And reloading for all of them.

My hands ache from trimming over 400 range pick up 223 cases yesterday.

All the best.. SF VET

My first cas rifle [1996] was a new `Rossi large loop .45 carbine which I wore out in a year. Sent it back to interarms and they replaced it. Sold it unfired and used the money to buy a used 24 inch .45 marlin cowboy ltd. Still have the marlin. Bought another ‘94 marlin and 3 uberti ‘73s, no more rossis. A shooter at our November cas match had his rossi 92 double feed and cost him all 10 rds. Of course buying it from a friend as opposed to a lgs you know all about the rifle and if it’s a good one get it.

I understand where you are with this SF VET. I used that "justify" word for a long time. I'm at a point where if I want it, I buy it. Justification or logic don't really enter in to it. As long as the family is taken care of, the bills are paid up, debt is retired and the nest egg is intact, I don't worry. I know I can't take it with me and there will be other joys in heaven. So here on this earth, at this time, I buy the guns I want.

So my 20 m$: BUY IT! Yeah it's kind of like an overgrown, centerfire 10/22. But they are fun. I don't have one, but I remember firing a pal's. For sure, $2k is a chunk of change, but you can't take it with you. For that matter, you can't take the Ruger with you either.

Just buy the next one you see. They are an absolute blast. Mine is the only .44 Magnum I own.

the same place I both my Winchester 70 in 270 a few months ago, in a small town in NE, where I have bought firearms for the past four decades, has a perfect early one. I will be back that way sometime this coming spring or summer, and will see what I can do. usually when I buy another firearm, my wife gets over it in a few days, with a trip to the jewelry store.

My hands hurt from trimming 400+ 223 cases.

Stay Safe, SF VET

Off topic: I took the handle off my Forster trimmer and replaced it with a nut. Then I use an appropriate socket on my electric screwdriver to save my paws from aches.

Now back to the regularly scheduled programming . . . .

NICE! Don't cha just love having a pistol caliber carbine and a sidearm chambered for the same cartridge?
I have pairings like that in 357, 44 mag, 9mm, and 45acp.
Could come in real handy in s SHTF scenario. Them ol' cowboys were pretty smart.

Do have a bevy of PCC's - pistol caliber carbines and really enjoy them, both at my range as well as hunting the dense woods where I live - nearly perfect for most spots I hunt.
But - I don't even consider the 'pairing' concept.
Even if I didn't HAVE a handgun in these calibers (perish the thought ), they are fantastic in their own right.
In examining what I've had and currently use - did get rid of an Oly Arms AR in 9mm.
Company is defunct and they used a proprietary magazine. The blowback recoil was the same as a 5.56 AR, same size. It was a fun plinker, but would never hunt with it. Enjoyed it for about ~10 years and it went quickly on consignment at a LGS.

The rest, a Rossi 92 16" .357, a Ruger .44 mag auto (old style), a Winchester Trapper in .45 Colt, a MechTech using a M1911 frame, .45 ACP, and a NEF Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W all are great handling carbines.

And yep, have plenty of handguns in all those calibers (except the .500), but their roles are completely different and guess I just never jumped on the pairing idea.

The last, the Handi in .500, is a stand-alone. No 'pairing' there. Have no desire or need for a .500 revolver. It is fun to handload for though. Downloaded plated HP's put deer down as well as any of the $4/round factory ammo.

Good thread!

I have two levers in .357 Magnum plus a few PCCs in 9mm and .40 S&W.

I got a long octagon barreled in 45 lc a number of years ago.
Pablo verde spring kit and a little polishing, aluminum magazine follower and marples tang site. Great gun accurate with 250 jsp.
Only complaint is that the stocks are some strange wood and very bulky.
I removed about 1/8 inch from the stock and forearm.
The wood is very difficult to finish. True oil would not dry on this wood.
Remained tacky for a week till I rubbed it off and used very thin coats of danish oil .

Default Got it.........

Got it today. It is Rossi M92 SS Carbine in .38/.357. Can not find it on the Rossi website. Came in the box with all the paperwork. Paid $700 for it. I am happy. Action is pretty slick and the trigger pull is fairly light (I would guess about 3 pounds).

Default Question for those who own a.38/.357 Rossi

I have a question for those of you who own a Rossi M92 in .38/357. My question is what do you feed yours? I figure that round nosed ammo will feed OK. But how does SWC and Wadcutter ammo feed, if at all?

158gr FMJ .357 with a good case crimp, helps feeding without hangups.
The ammo from S&B feeds great.

Their website calls it the R92.

Congrats... It's a nice rifle.

The Steve's Gunz video is worth every penny. A metal follower is a good idea. The ejector spring is too heavy. I use a cut down spring, but you can order a package of springs C-530 (7/32 x 1 x .020) that are supposed to be good. Marauder's homesite shows how to slick a multitude of cowboy guns. My .38/.357 is finicky about OAL and shape, it likes them long. Semi-wadcutters are generally not a good idea. My .45 is not particular about bullet weight and will load empty cases. Lighten or change the ejector spring and smooth the burrs will make it a sweet carbine. A Wolf Ruger single action hammer spring will lighten the hammer spring. I don't recall if it is an 18 or 19 lb. spring, but you can buy a spring pack of Wolf's cheap. It isn't as fast as a '73, but I like '92's.

I tried SWC in mine and they didn't feed reliably. The sharp shoulder hung up sometimes. Not always, but often enough to be irritating. I've never tried wadcutters. Using round nose flat points, I've never had feeding problems. The key is the smooth transition from the bullet profile into the crimped case mouth. Even a truncated cone profile would be fine, provided it doesn't have a stepped forward driving band.

FWIW, I use Badman 157 gr RNFP bullets. They are flat-base, his workmanship is impeccable and they shoot very accurately. I use my R92 with these bullets over a load of 4227 for lever action silhouette. Misses are definitely not the load's fault . . . .

Took the carbine to the range this morning. I need to work with the open sights a bit. Probably a 6 inch group at 50 yards. The big thing was that I tried 158 grain cast SWC .357 ammo in it. All fed as advertised, no problems or hiccups. Now will get old eyes accustom to shooting buckhorn sights again and find a load that the carbine likes. This morning was using 11.5 grains of 2400 with the 158 grain cast SWC with a CCI 300 primer.

If you want to add optics, the OEM Rossi base has been unavailable for years, but an alternate had been generally available here.

Well, he makes them himself. It's a custom made, low-volume part, but if you were interested and contacted him, he could probably let you know of his next production run.

I have a Rossi R92-55008 (44 Magnum, 16", Blue) that I purchased new in September of 2020. It's without doubt my favorite lever gun! I can't think of much that Rossi could have done to make this a better carbine.

Not a scope mount, but the Turnbull red dot mount works great on my Taylor 1892 .357.

Here is another option for mounting a little wider variety of optics
Scope Mounts
Just a little less than halfway down the page it the Dovetail Slot Scope Mount. I've been thinking of getting one to mount a picatinny red dot on mine.

Got silly and bought another carbine. This one is a Pedersoli Colt Lightning in .45 Colt. Bought it at an estate auction. It is NIB and my winning bid was $850. Will post a few pictures when I get back home from vacation.

My .357 (pictured way up-thread) is happy with SWCs in .38 or .357, but balked enough on full wadcutters that I discontinued attempts to use them.

I wish I bought one of those back when they were plentiful and affordable. I’ve often thought about having my beautiful dinged up blue worn Browning B92 .44 magnum cut down and a saddle ring put on.
