Hey folks... In my post #55, there is a book shown titled "My Life Journey with Smith & Wesson", written by Dwayne Charron.
The author's son (Dean) has made his Father's book available in memory of Dwayne's passing in January 2019 at the age of 93.
This is the link to where you can either read it online or download a free PDF copy of the book:

Hämmerli Pistolen und Revolver
Hämmerli Pistolen und Revolver
By N.U. Schweinfurth, 2013
A concise yet encompassing history of Hämmerli, their pistols and revolvers. From their beginnings in the late 19th century until their ultimate recent demise.
The author cites from a considerable body of first hand references, including documentation, collector grade guns, and indeed, numerous rare prototypes and one-off curiosities.
Who would have guessed that Hämmerli created a modified version of their model 120 free pistol as an "special weapon" for a gov't contract, complete with silencer and detachable shoulder stock? (see picture!)
The author is also a gifted draftsman and technical artist; the book is filled with his many excellent drawings.

VISIER
VISIER "Das Internationale Waffen-Magazin"
An amazing array of topics, all covered with substantiative information, plus great photography.
This issue: Free Pistol comparison, dedicated 22 Hornet rifle comparison, Archery, Crossbow (competitive/target), Feinwerkbau 103 Air pistol review, Russian PPSh-41 machine gun, and much more!
Their reviews are excellent. They don't just suck up to their advertisers (as is the tradition with US based gun magazines). They dig in deep and they don't pull any punches.
PS: Gunhacker....Love those loading manuals!!!

A little-seen George Madis book.
Most have seen his various other Winchester books.
When I first saw a hint that this one existed, I searched (pre-inter web)

Continuing the vintage Speer reloading manuals...
Speer #5 - 1961.... the $2.59 price sticker can't be from 1961, can it?
A gallon of gas was 30 cents then, and $2.59 would have bought you around 8-1/2 gallons... almost 1/2 a tank.
Would someone spend that kind of money on a reloading manual back then?
Speer #6 - 1964
Speer #7 - 1966
Speer #8 - 1970

U.S. MILITARY MATCH AND MARKSMANSHIP AUTOMATIC PISTOLS by Bill Jenkins.
Touches on all things related to the title and American style Bullseye shooting.
Check out the sample pics. Notice the technical drawings of the S&W 1911 barrels...from the 1960s! Special project for military marksmanship units.
Lots of info on modified guns and special one-of-a-kind prototypes.

I have that book, it is a good read. I know Bill Jenkins, have been to his shop quite a few times. 10x Gunsmithing – Custom Guns and Gunsmithing It is about 20 miles from me.

I came across these two books while digging out my vintage Speer reloading manuals.
Dated 1946 - Maurice Decker was the Camping Editor of Outdoor Life magazine.
Dated 1949, it's a classic for gunstock finishing... the information is still very much applicable (even today),
and especially useful for duplicating a vintage oil varnish finish.

With all of the new developments in firearm designs that have taken place in the last decade or so, it feels like "ground breaking" became a somewhat common phrase in gun in reviews.
Back in their day, here's two handguns that truly broke the mold... nothing like them existed commercially when they first arrived on the scene.
The T/C Contender in 1967 and the Remington XP-100 in 1963.
I have a T/C Contender... I wish I had bought an XP-100 when I had the chance.

The infantryman pictured on the cover is Rick Rescorla. This was taken at the Battle of I Drang. The movies "We were Soldiers" is about that fight. Rescorla was killed on 9/11 in the Towers trying getting people out.

To follow up my postings of vintage reloading manuals, here's some vintage reloading magazines... at the risk of being too repetitive,
you'll likely be seeing a lot of these, as I have every issue from #1 to current.

Gun Digest 1959
What a great edition! I picked this because of the nice cover art, and accompanying story about free pistol shooting.
But, as I perused the contents, I was struck not just by the consistently high level of writing and topics, but by the integrity of the authors and editor. The articles aren't "dumbed down". Some of them are pointedly critical of bad behavior, such as lousy marksmanship, bad sportsmanship, and unsafe handloading practices, for example. What's different is the evidence if a society that didn't just sit back and accept it: "Oh well, that's just people having fun. We don't want to lose customers."
Also, Editor in Chief John T. Amber loved fine guns, and there are plenty within these pages. Some folks might go "Oh wow! Look at those prices!" But, honestly, they were expensive back then compared to wages, because the dollar was worth closer to what a dollar should be. Furthermore, the evaluations of these guns were honest and critical. Mr. Amber would never accept the patronizing boot-licking towards advertisers that we see in print today. And, the manufacturers knew it! Maybe that's why they built better guns then?......
I'll take an old edition of Gun Digest any day over the latest issue of "Plastic 9mm Monthly".
PS: I included a snipet on the article about "Hollywood" gunmen, given the recent tragedy committed by a certain outspoken movie-clown. Too bad he and his crew weren't familiar with the basic practices that were understood back then.

As the man said "Today's selection". The "Guns & Ammo Complete Guide To The .45 Auto" from 1989, about this time I was shooting a lot of IPSC in Calif. and then N.C., then life got in the way and shooting almost stopped..........

Great idea to include the table of contents.
That might be a good general practice for a lot of these entries where possible.
Gunsmithing books are such a great resource.
I like those old Handloader covers, too.

I have the same book, it was given to me in 1981 by my In-Laws for Christmas. I believe those are reprints as mine was brand new at the time.

From 1972
One of the "must have" S&W books is one by John Henwood, published in 1997.
Tough as nails to find one, it was self published and only 500 copies were made.

Three of my older reloading manuals. The Sharpe is from 1953 as it was my Fathers, the copyrights go back to 1937. Sharpe assisted Col.Wesson in developing the .357 Magnum. The Lyman 41st Edition is from 1957, again my Fathers copy. The Lyman 45th Edition is from 1970 and was the first I purchased.

A lot of great old stuff from my Dad's era.

I simply love these older Gunsmithing/DYI books, because with today's firearms mainly being or moving to synthetic stocks, a lot of this type of information is fading away and become less relevant, unless you have a traditional rifle/shotgun.
1975 - This once has so much of an assortment of what I call "traditional/heritage" information... Not old enough to really be called vintage (in my mind), out of print and a treasure trove of still relevant reference material.

The sad thing is many collectible milsurps were destroyed by the DIY folks. Yes, I understand it was their rifle to do with as the pleased. The unmolested milsurps are worth more then the "Jewels" they made of them. Just my $.02.
