I recently bought an M1A "loaded" model. It is a few years old, but the seller claims that he received it as a gift from his parents and never fired it. It certainly looks unfired, The stock and metal are in excellent shape, with a very few minor blemishes..

Beautiful example of an M1A. Stainless steal barrel, nonstandard muzzle suppressor no bayonet lug so probably a let 90's early 2000's rifle.

That being said, it should be a great shooter! If you don't reload for .308/7.62, you may wish to consider doing so in the future. These rifles are more than capable of MOA accuracy with match grade ammunition.

Congratulations on a fine acquisition and great shooter!

They are fantastic rifles capable of impressive accuracy if you do your part... I have a 1996 NM Stainless... enjoy letting other people ring the 12 inch 300 yard gong with iron sights without straining.. most people would not consider taking the shot without a scope... it's easy with the M1A-NM..

Thanks, guys!

I called Springfield and they confirmed it is a "loaded" model, sold in November 2005.

I've made two brief visits to the range last week. I took some LC M80 and some 168 gr FGMM to get a sense of how it shoots at 100 yards.

I shot the LC first to make sure I was on paper, then fired an LC 5 shot group, then a FGMM 5 round group

I fired at the top target first with LC. My first shot was low. I then turned the elevation the wrong direction, so my second shot was really low. I corrected and got the elevation correct, then made a small correction to the left then shot my LC group.

Then shot 5 rounds at the bottom target with the FGMMM

The LC shot a decent 4 shot group (2.6") and a mediocre 5 shot group (4.2").

The FGMM was much better....1.7"

I do reload. Do I need small base dies for the M1A? Any pet loads for the M1A you can suggest?

Interesting note....a friend who shot competition with his national match M1A said he'd clean the bore at the beginning of the season, then not again til he was done.

Great battle rifle.
If you scope it:
Bassett low mount. Sadlak is good too.
Bradley cheek riser.

Great rifles. I have a loaded model and several years ago I had a Bula Defense Model 21DMR built. It comes with an integral scope rail as well as open sights. It is scoped and one of my favorite shooters.

My favorite powder is IMR4064, pushing either 168g Hornady's or 175g Sierra's.

Calfed,
I have one also with the chrome moly barrel. I added some NM parts from Windy City Sourcing, a good company to work with. My best so far accurate load is 168 grain A max bullet, 41.0 grains of H-4895, WW brass, and CCI-BR2 bench rest primers. Loaded to 2.800 OAL with a very slight taper crimp. I use small base dies with Imperial sizing die wax. I had to open the rear sight aperature to .070 for 74 year old eyes. Since my vision has gotten a little worse I will have to scope it down the road. That load will hold around 1" at 100 yd's. I believe with a scope it is a good 3/4" shooter or less!! They are that accurate!! I went with the NM parts to squeeze the most accuracy out of it, that is why I believe the scope is a good idea from what i'm seeing just with the iron sights. I did buy my "Loaded" new. Let me know if I can help more. Enjoy your new shooter!!

I happened to be in the right place at the right time.....when SA did thier last run of rifles with GI parts(new)....mine has the Winchester barrel....and when I tried Austrailian surplus nato ammo....it became shockingly accurate....stashed the Austrailan away....switched to South African Nato....remember when we could buy the surplus for $100 a case of 1000....

Have worn out 4 barrels and am on my 5th (Obermeyer 5R) in my M1A shooting NRA Service Rifle. I made Master a number of years ago.

Used many 8lb jugs of IMR 4895 and 168 match bullets from ALL of the bullet makers, usually Sierra when we could, what ever was the cheapest I could find.

Group size just didn't vary by any appreciable amount. If I could stay in the X ring I was a happy boy.

Most of us using IMR 4895 used 41-42 grs in a LC or Federal casing. OAL was at magazine length.

Hope that helps..........

Randy

That's one fine rifle! I had one over 15 years ago and sold it. I want another one.

Congrats.

Thanks, guys!

I really like this rifle.

Thanks, Jim.

I appreciate the reloading information and I'll look into the NM parts and source.

Nice.

I looked mine over a bit and discovered that the trigger group appears to be H&R. Will look more closely and see if there are any other GI parts.

Thanks, Randy. I've got a decent supply of 4895 and 4064 powder and quite a few 168 gr Nosler Competition bullets. I'll take a run at reloading some ammo for this beauty.
