Illogical firearm purchase, Cobray SXS 410 derringer
At a gunshow today I purchased an illogical handgun. A Cobray 410/45 Colt sxs handgun. Someone modified it by making grips roughly the shape of a Colt Bisley. I've owned them when they were in there in the $70 range new and decide it would live in my camper this summer.

In the last century I had a single shot Cobray 410/45 derringer. A 45 Colt 185 gr SWC at about 700 fps shot very good groups. At 10' the 410 ammo was shot size and velocity dependent!
#9's were about 6' pattern (1200fps)
#7 1/2's were about4' pattern (1200fps)
#4's were about 2' pattern (1155fps)
3-000 buck were about 4" pattern (listed as Max. but estimated at 1300fps)

Sounds like it could maybe be a good snake gun. But sometimes you just buy something cause you want to.

Had a non-gun guy friend bought one after he tried use a hammer to dispatch a badly injured deer that had been hit by a car.
Of course in Wyoming, it's illegal to kill an injured deer. You are supposed to contact the Game and Fish Department who will dispatch a warden to put it down. Of course he or she might be hours away. If you shoot the deer, you could be charged with poaching.
On another note, it recently became legal in Wyoming to salvage roadkill for food. I guess you are supposed to wait for the animal to die before you take it home.

I’ve never owned a Cobray pistol. I have had to modify the triggers on 3 of them for friends. The triggers besides being 500lb wouldn’t reach brake point until less than flush in spur.
If there was a snake shot with every good snake pistol and a bear shot with every bear pistol, these two species would be extinct. Cobrays are in the category of any gun is better than none.

Walnut I almost bought exact gun in original condition about 18 months ago. I himmed and hawed then it was gone. It was a private seller about 90 min away…….. problem was in NY I’d have to meet him at FFL buy it. Come back to my hometown to put it on my permit then go back and get it. Jumping thru hoops for a $150 gun. Enjoy yours. They seem like they’re be fun.
