Thought I would post a couple pics of a new Springfield Armory "Garrison" .45 acp 1911 pistol I just picked up.

I was "browsing" at a local gun shop when I spotted this Garrison model. The polished salt blued finish caught my eye - Not the usual two tone, or "coated" finish. Clean 1911 lines, crisp machining and tight fit. All the basic features that make a 1911 enjoyable, and nothing extra.

Looked it over carefully, and liked what I seen, so, off to a new home. $803.00 OTD.

So far just a magazine full of hardball off the rear deck - no malfunctions, good trigger, and seems to hit POA at 20 paces or so. More trigger time to come..........

Note the gun actually has a nicely polished blue finish, but the lighting was pretty bad in the pics. It came with nice laser engraved wood grips, but of the thin variety. They don't work with my big hands, so I replaced them with a set of standard thickness double rosewoods I had kicking around.

I tried out both a blue and stainless version a few months ago when my range hosted Springfield Days. I like Springfield 1911s, have had a number-both 9 & 45. If I wanted a 5” 45 these days I’d get either a Garrison or Ronin-excellent value for the gun.

Good catch!

I really like the Garrison model, it's very similar to my 20 year old Fully Loaded which has digested a variety of ball and HP ammo without a single hitch. SA 1911's have a good track record for reliability out of the box.

About the only differences I can tell in the Garrison and Fully Loaded model is the front serrations on the slide, which I could take or leave, and 20 years ago Springfield was still using true Novak sights.

All 1911s look the same to me. All I know is that you didn't get the beautiful stainless model

What’s the diff between Garrison and Ronin?

The Ronin 5" has front serrations, stainless frame, fiber optic front sight, ledge style rear sight, different style trigger. Also comes from the factory with the thin grips.

These are the two Garrisons I tried out that the Springfield rep brought:

Stainless with it's target, 230gr fmj

Blue with it's target also 230gr fmj

I just acquired the Ronin 10mm because I like the 2 tone. The Ronin and Garrison are great guns for the price. I swapped out the factory grips for VZ Carbon Fiber ETC Frags.

Sights, differences in finish, slide serrations, ect, but they are all pretty much the same under the skin. It is refreshing to see an old school recoil spring set up and no firing pin safety. I like the crisp machining, reminds me of a Colt, as apposed to say a Kimber, who tends to soften sharp edges, giving a slightly different feel and look.

I like the Garrison Model and I'd like to see and handle one in person .They appear to be well finished .
I would prefer an adjustable rear sight though. I wonder if the adjustable sights from the either the Range Officer or the Loaded Target Model would fit the dovetail ?

Empe - They call the rear sight a Novak, but I am not sure if it is the same dovetail cut. I am sure SA could answer your question. Might need a taller front as well. I liked the Range Officers, but did not care for that rough finish the ones I shot had.

Yes...good idea . I will give them a call . I'm with you on the Range Officer as far as the finish is concerned. A real nice gun but just did not like the finish. That's why the Garrison caught my eye with what appears to be an attractive gloss blue .
.. But I really want an adjustable rear sight .
I already have a Colt 1911 .45 . If I go for the SA Garrison it will be in 9MM .

No, the other sights will not fit however Novak does offer an adjustable sight for their dovetail cut.

I did call Springfield Armory and spoke with someone and yes you are correct their other sights will not fit . I would need a rear sight with a Novak dovetail cut.

I wonder who is making 1911 frames and slides for Springfield Armory? It used to be Imbel in Brazil. SA would buy these in varying degrees of completeness then finish them here. The cheaper ones had the frame and slide rail cuts done in Brazil.
But, now SA is sourcing these parts elsewhere. I've heard everything from South Korea to Smith & Wesson.

I'm sure everyone here knows the Springfield Armory doesn't make anything. They assemble some stuff, or just have other products branded for them.
Not necessarily bad, but it's something to keep in mind as quality and value will fluctuate with sources and expenses.
