Many low power scopes being sold these days have an objective lense the same dia as the tube. Granted, it's a relatively new concept.

I bought one of the first ones (1-4x) and put it on a carbine. The trend became lighter weight and more compact. I wasn't sure I liked it at first but it's a fine scope and I've grown to really like it. Everything you need and nothing you don't. Leupold may have been the first to market. They build a lot of glass for the military.

It is definitely not a new concept!

Had one on a Mini 14 in the mid to late 80's.
It was a Weaver and the tube was actually made from stainless steel instead of the stainless look they went for later.
The G3 was my service rifle and I shot the G36 a lot in the reserve. The average recruit, and I trained a few, could qualify much easier with the G36 than with the G3. House to house fighting scenarios make a lighter rifle also preferrable.
