Colt Official Police
The first firearm that I ever wanted to own... Growing up in th 70s with only 1 TV in the house, and, Mom and Dad controlling what we were allowed to watch, we watched a lot of Andy Griffith... For the last few years, I have been looking for a good condition 1950s-1960s era Official Police, just like Barney Fife's... I've finally got her...

I like 'em too!
Despite my fondness for all things S&W I do, indeed, share your liking of the Colt Official Police. I have two "birth year" OP and this 1932 version which is especially sweet.

There is definitely something unique about the feel of an early Colt Official Police or Officers Model revolver. Colt and S&W, you have to appreciate the quality and legacy of both to fully respect our hobby and passion. I go back and forth with both manufacturers, always the early models. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Nobody could handle a firearm like Officer Fife!

Great looking OP. The one on top is the first handgun I ever shot. I was nine, and that was a big day with my dad that I will never forget.

I've owned 3 and an Army Special over the years. 4" & 5" 38 Special Nickel and 6" blue OPs and a 4" 32-20 Blued AS. If I had ever had a 4" blue OP I'd have kept it. There is currently a blue OP frame soaking in my garage waiting to be mated with a nickel barrel and cylinder. Maybe with a round butt, bobbed hammer and barrel cut to 3" for a BBQ gun.
Lotta class in an OP.

You're only allowed to load one at a time though!
And keep it in your shirt pocket until you need it.

My first issue on the PD was a well-worn OP. That's why I didn't buy it when they were traded. Last year I found a clean birth year (1948) OP and I bought it.

What year or serial is it?
It looks to be in great shape with no visible holster wear on the barrel sides.
This PA service gun (shipped 1951), my first OP, shows evidence of lots of trips in and out of the holster.

Serial: 866878. Which, according to Colt's website, puts it at 1959...
No, there does not seem to be any real wear on it... This leads me to believe that it was refinished at some point... From this forum, I've learned what to look for in a S&W refinish job, but, not so much for a Colt... I'm going to take the grips off and perform a good cleaning tonight, maybe I'll see something then...

Did all the early OPs with black grips have the same factory blueing?
LGS has 2 in 38spl. One is nicer cosmetically than the othe but $29 cheaper. The more expensive one is shinier but missing knob on end of ejector rod. I only own 1 colt so please advise me

Nice pistols and still almost reasonably priced. I've got four, a six inch from 1942 (Iowa Ordnance Plant), a four inch, a Commando, and a four inch Mk III. An OP that was used by Don Knotts in the series came up on Gunbroker a few years ago. The provenance was a bit weak, don't recall what it went for.

Just out of high school, I took a job with Burns Security. They asked me if I had ever fired a gun. Well, I'd hunted since I was a kid, so I said yes. Next thing I knew they issued me a Colt Official Police 38 with fake MOP grips, a Sam Brown Belt and holster, and I was an armed guard...things were different back then. My "training" consisted of being told "Don't shoot yourself or anyone else unless you have to" and "read this little book." A booklet called "You and your revolver." Oh, and six rounds of RNL ammo.
I never did shoot that gun. Turned it back in with the same six rounds a couple of years later.
I stopped by the LGS this afternoon. They had a OP in the "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" case. The tag said it was a 22 LR. The SN indicated it was made in 1955. Nice condition, solid lockup. Franzite grips.
I'm sure they want too much for it, but I don't have a good 22. It's on hold for a couple of days while I "think about it."

As I said, I have been looking for this one for a while... I've turned down a few prior to this one... Either wasn't in good enough shape, too expensive, hell I turned down one because it was made in 1972...
This one was a smidge outside of my comfort zone, money wise... But, the search is finally over...

I didn't have to think about it too long. I asked if they could do better on the price ($750) and they did. One of the best discounts I've ever gotten actually, so I took it home with me. I've owned a couple of 17/18 Smith and Wessons over the years, but I've never had a Colt DA 22.
S/N dates it to 1955, so it doesn't look too bad for gun almost as old as I am. At first I was turned off by the Franzite grips, but darn it, they've grown on me. They're in good shape, and look very "period" to me. I remember seeing them on guns back in the day, both in the real world and on TV, although I must be honest and say, I had no idea what they were back then. Even my "Fanner 50's" had plastic stag grips IIRC.
I don't think I've ever even seen another one in 22. Pay no attention to the lousy lighting.

Still kicking myself for not purchasing a NIB Colt OP, if I remember right it was $250 or BO at gun show closing time. On my short list now.
