I leaped through all the hoops and placed an order for an M1 Garand with the Civilian Marksmanship Program early last fall - my first ever. I foolishly thought we might have it by Christmas. When ordered they indicated "rack" grade rifles available, and no others, so I ordered a rack grade.

Received an e-mail about a month ago letting me know they were about to process my order, or something to that effect, and I was in the queue, which was comforting. Received another e-mail last week letting me know rack grades were now in low inventory, but coming off that status with availability improving relatively soon. If I'd prefer a "service" grade that might be accomplished sooner for an added charge. I opted for the service grade upgrade and less than three days later was in possession of this fine rifle.



It is Springfield manufacture and the serial number on the receiver dates it to June 1943. The serial numbers on all the important parts match. Muzzle reading of 3, and a throat reading of 2+, it wears a new walnut stock with a single CMP stamped cartouche.

My son and I have another Springfield Garand dating from the fall of 1942 with a National Match barrel dated 1954. Now he and I can compete together with our own, respective, shootin' irons.

Had a friend that was in WWII. Had a carbine. said was an unreliable ****. Said he smashed it upon a rock and picked up a Garand from someone who didn't need it anymore and used that.

I haven't purchased from them in several years, NY's Safe Act made it a real pain. But IMHO they are a go to place for whatever they have in stock at the time. They grade fairly, and price fairly. Over the years I have purchased a Garand, a carbine, an 03, and lots of M2 ball ammo. Never dissatisfied with anything.

Congratulations, that's a nice looking one. The boxes have come a long way since I received mine in a cardboard box - but the price was less back then.

When I was kid.........Long ago. Like 1960........My Dad got a carbine from the DCM for $12.50. Shot it some didn't like and sold it.

Been collecting Garands from CMP for over 20 years. Have seen part numbers on some of the major parts, but never serial numbers except on the receiver.

The service grade was the way to go. Much nicer rifle.

I really like purchasing my Garand from CMP. They are the "best". I took their Advanced Maintenance Course ... WHAT A BLAST!!! It was fun to "build your own" ... You selected the parts and you put it together (under close CMP gunsmith supervision). I sure would like to take another of their courses... they are hard to get into now... too popular.

Service grades, even today, will be good looking and running M-1's from the CMP. About the same for a Field, except expect rougher wood and maybe a little rust pitting. Barrel won't measure out quite as nice on a Field, even though it may shoot fine. Actually a little more likely to get a GI stock with cartouches on a Field. The current Rack grades are likely to have a re-parked receiver, a barrel with lots of rust pits on the outside, and really ugly wood. Expect considerable rust pits above and below the wood line on a current Rack.

I am hoping that Service and Field grades become available again as I'll order those. Too many ugly Racks coming out for me to order one.

There is paperwork required to order from CMP. I didn't find it that difficult to navigate however I'm a good paper navigator.

Got my first US surplus firearm from DCM in 1962 (a RR 1911A1 for $17.50 ) and my last about 10 years ago from CMP, an H&R M1 service grade. So 50 years of buying through the DCM/CMP without complaint. 1903A3, M1 Carbine, 1917, and lots of ammo. I think that I’ve gotten more than my share, so I’ll leave the rest for the younger guys. Hope that they have as much fun with them as I have had.

I missed the good days and should have ordered one years ago. Missed the good ammo deals too... now any '06 rounds are $1.50+ a round.

I picked up an Expert early this year and have been working on oiling the stock. One day I will shoot it..

Beautiful Garand!! However I'm an instant gratification guy. No hoops to jump through like CMP. I know you guys like that but I will pay more from GB and have it within a week. No knock on CMP, I just don't roll that way.

That would be 1964. The DCM sold carbines to NRA members to purchase. Seems I've read about 140K were sold. Lots of folks jointed the NRA for that one year only just so they could purchase one.
