Sambar Stagaholic
I know there are many of us here! It is so beautiful and each piece is so different. I saw this Case fixed blade and had to have it. It is from 1979, and in 23 years, it is taking on that wonderful mellow golden cream color, that will only get better with age. As usual, show ‘em if you got ‘em.

Wish I had some Sambar stag stocks for a handgun or two. Like a lot of things lately it seems I have been priced out of the market. 😢
All I have are these 2 knives with stag.

My only set of Sambar stag grips are on this Ruger old model .44 Magnum which dates from 1957. They are factory grips, which were available for an extra charge in those days.

Has anyone here ever bought a gun just for the grips? I’ve tried to do it twice but GB Billionaires out bid me.

I bet in your line of business that you remember when you could get fantastic pieces of sambar stag for next to nothing.

John, do you happen to remember the approximate up charge for those superb grips? What ever it was, it was worth it!

Pardon the extra walnut set, but the two on the right wear Sambar stag from the late Roy Fishpaw. I've been downsizing some lately, but realized I probably couldn't sell these two without the grips. Roy would only fit grips if you sent him the gun. You wouldn't think there'd be much variation in modern guns, but I have a maple pair by him that was on a model 18. I gave the gun to a deserving young shooter, but kept the grips - I'm not that nice. I tried them on half a dozen K frames from several decades, and they wouldn't quite fit. I had to send him another gun to have the grips refitted.

Larry thanks for starting this thread.....
.......,been a long time since we had some good Sambar images. Some great stuff in these images.
I like the boot grip versions that were available years ago. Have been lucky enough to get a few sets.

That Myres is my favorite…. I found it at a local gun show a few years ago.. really didn’t care if I had anything that would fit it - just looked too good not to buy. Turns out it only fits one of my guns - a 1940 NRM
The fellow that was selling it also had a cane gun… got that too.

A couple of old knives. I remember when I was a kid making my mom stop at the Hoffritz store in Dadeland Mall so I could look at the knife display.

They make a perfect pair! Does the holster have just "El Paso" or "Tex" too in the makers mark?

Supposedly, those that have El Paso, Tex. are older than the ones that just say El Paso, but I don't know what year or date divides them. Some think maybe 1953, but I think Turnerriver has both stamps on holsters he thinks are from the same time period. Maybe he will see this.
I swear that holster looks brand new!

Here’s a stag handled “Puma”.

Generally the stamp with TEX. was used on older Myres holsters but as this shows, both stamps were used at the same time. Your holster was in the Myres catalogs for decades so it’s hard to date them.

Thanks, John
You posted just as I was posting a pic of the backside…. didn’t know if it would help date it. It would be great if the year of manufacture was close to the gun (1940).

I don't think the backside will help with that holster, like it does with most, but I still say that gem is brand new. The backside confirms it.

That is hilarious! I think I remember forum member Wyatt Burp talking about buying awesome Sambar Stag grips for next to nothing.

About 50 years ago, I recall buying a very nice pair of K sq butt sambar at a gun show in Baltimore for $2 -- TWO dollars !! A few years after the Ruger Redhawk first came out, I bought a great sambar pair for it for $18 at a show in Harrisonburg ,Va. He wanted $20 and I "negotiated"
Oh my ....Lots and lots of sambar come and gone is BURNED in to my memory !!

Sambar Stag can be very different obviously. Here are 2 knives, one a Limited Edition Buck Model 118 and the other a Randall Model 14. The Sambar Stag on both of them is similar. No deep grooves or “popcorn”. So which do you like better, the type in my original post with grooves and popcorn, or the type on these two knives?
