Nylon 66 Problem (Ammo Update)
I was shooting my Nylon 66 yesterday and had some failures to eject. I had the gun cleaned a couple of years ago and have not shot it that much. I was firing Federal "rimfire target" rounds from a value pack.
I have had good luck in the past with Federal bulk ammo. Any suggestions?

It could be time for a new extractor, plunger and spring.

Try some different ammo.

I have read that those rifles were prone to interior rusting in the action area?

I would guess it’s one of two things. Number one, RF ammo today is junk.
Secondly as with most semi auto 22s people tend to use sprays on them.
Such as WD-40. This does flush out powder residue and it ends up turning into a solid. Depending on where in gun it ends up can cause failures.
I’m not a fan of Rem 66 but they are like the Ak-47 of 22s. I’ve seen ones that have never been cleaned still shooting. I’ve had many apart and can’t say I recall any that had anymore tenancy to rust than other models.

My first thought is the ammo itself.
A lot of .22rf ammo around these days if not the high quality stuff we were used to in the past.
Some of the rounds from the same box often give a bad report indicating to me at least wide variations in pressures.
It is the chamber pressure that makes the blowback operation of these 22autos work.
If the fired round can't push the bolt all the way to the rear, then the fired case won't reliably be ejected.
Extraction doesn't happen upon firing with the aid of the Extractor either. It's the chamber pressure/gas pressure that pushes the case against the bolt face and the case & bolt as one are pushed backwards.
The extractor is there for manual manipulation of the rounds from the chamber.
..."I was firing Federal "rimfire target" rounds from a value pack."...
These may be 22StdVel rounds, though the Target name may only be a marketing thing.
Standard Vel ammo should normally work in a 66, but again with todays ****** RF ammo,,I'd try some other brand As Mr Simmons suggests and even some HyperVel stuff if you can find it to see if the problem resolves itself.
Check the chamber rim edge to see if the firing pin may be striking it and turning up a small burr there. That can cause the fired case to be dragged kicking and screaming from the chamber instead of easily drawn from it.
It's a common issue with RF guns. The burr if there can easily be pushed back into place either with a specialty tool or simply use a slender tapered punch and care.
The burred chamber comes from the fireing pin being too long. It should be taken care off or the problem will come back again.
Clean out the chamber area as best you can.
You can disassemble the 66, that's not too bad of a job.
Getting them back together is the harder part of the rest of the day spent with them if you are not familiar with the rifle.
I'd check that chamber first & then try other ammo first before taking things apart.

The stock and receiver are structural nylon, they won't rust. However, removing the 2 bolts* that hold the action cover on will allow you to lift it off and inspect what's underneath. The big bolt on the underside will allow the barrel to be removed. A good cleaning and very, very light selective lubrication should take care of the problem if it's not ammunition related.
I've noted that, for whatever reason, Federal price point bulk ammo seems to have a high (to me) percentage of duds. OTOH, their Auto Match is great stuff. Try some other brand, give some high speed a try.
Over 50 years ago I bought a used Nylon 66 "that jams". Took it home, dumped a fist sized pile of unburned powder & crud out, cleaned and lubed it and it's been running fine ever since. Except for the occasional ammo issue.
*The bolt handle pulls straight out.

I never had much luck with Federal .22 ammo. The Nylon 66 is a reliable and accurate rifle. Just don't take it apart unless you're a mechanical engineer. I've got a Senaca Green 66 now and also the exterior mag one as well. They're both utterly reliable. No need for cleaning the action and no need for lubrication...in fact oil on the interior will attract powder residue.

I'd never consider taking one apart - but we do need pictures:

Several months ago I was having a great deal of difficulty with another .22 when using Federal bulk. Failures to eject, failures to feed, etc. At least one malf in every magazine. Switched to Winchester bulk and all the malfs went away.

My first gun was a Nylon 66. A Seneca Green one. I practically slept with that thing. Throughout my youth and well into my teen years I put brick after brick of .22 LR through that thing. For most of my ownership period I had no idea how to tear the thing down and clean it. Never attempted it. When I got into my teens and a little smarter and braver I decided that I probably ought to do it, I tore it down. I was kind of shocked. I pulled piles of crud out of there by the spoonful. The inside was completely encased. I have no idea how, or why the thing kept running. But it did. I don't remember it ever malfunctioning, ever.
After I cleaned it and got it back together it never fired a full tube of ammo again without a few fails. Go figure?

I also suggest different ammo.
DO NOT take that gun apart. Its plumb full of little bitty pieces that tend to go everywhere!
Some years ago, a friend brought me one his Dad had taken apart many years ago and asked me to put it back together. Took me about 3 days just figure out what parts were missing. And even with instructions with pictures, it took at least that long to get it working.

YouTube has some great videos on field stripping. The mistake I made the first time I took it apart was pulling the trigger. The barrel will not seat unless the gun is cocked. For cleaning you don’t need to go to far. Just pull out the bolt handle, unscrew the receiver cover and pop out the barrel. Leave all the guts alone. Again, wat h a few vids first.

As previously suggested - try different ammo. I have had failures with Federal .22 ammo in the past in numerous pistols as well as rifles.

I was using Federal red box 36grhp ammo. I found a youtube test of various ammo and this one was rated the worst. It had a SD of 56fps and a velocity spread of 1039 to 1230. Federal blue box ammo was a spread of 19 and velocity of 1125 to 1185.

I sprayed a bit of Ballistol on it and I got one jam with the first 14 rounds. The second 14 all worked just fine. I am trying to shoot up the rest of this ammo. It did work perfectly in my Ruger MKII.

I have the Mohawk 10C version of the Nylon 66 with a 10 round removable box magazine. It works fine, but if the magazine guide (which is held in place by a screw) loosens, it will not feed at all. It is difficult to reach and tighten that guide screw, and it took me awhile to figure out how to do it. I hope I never need to do it again. A very poor design from an accessibility standpoint. I probably should have used Loctite on that screw but I was concerned that I might have to remove it one day.
