Bowie Knives

Buck General

Alas, the largest Bowie Knife I own only has a 7-⅜" Blade...

It's a Buck 120 General, so it's nothing too fancy either.

Buck Knives are one of my favorite. A very practical USA made knife made to be used, I have several 119's and a couple of 120.

My big mystery bowie

I got this bowie at my favorite pawn shop. They know i like sheath knives and jumped me with this one right when i walked in. The blade is over 10" long. The knife is unmarked and i'm guessing it is a kit build from some time long ago like 1986 or so. Good blade and sharp!

I only have a couple of bowies. The first is a Case XX and original sheath from WWII...it was my Dad's while he was serving in the USAAF (8th and 9th Air Forces). Unfortunately a buddy of mine borrowed it and added a retention strap to the sheath, but it does retain the bowie better. The second is a BudK's Pakistani damascus bowie. I picked it up relatively cheaply out of BudK's catalog, but it's not a cheaply made knife. The steel and damascus pattern are very nice, and it's a strong and sharp bowie. I dyed the scales to add some age and patina and re-etched the blade. A local friend of mine fabricated the heavy duty bullhide sheath for me- it's designed to carry the bowie angled in the small of the back.

Re Iggy's post, #16 up above: even at 65 years old, I'd really like to learn how to throw a knife and have the knife actually stick into the tree or board I threw it at; and with plenty of force to penetrate the rib cage into the heart. (I mean, you know, if I had to.) Are throwing knives weighted or something so the blade hits first? Sounds like that would be a given, assuming I hit what I'm throwing at. Heck, Big Jake threw his folding pocket knife into the tree when they were going to hang that sheep herder! But that's "The Duke." He could make Superman cry if he wanted!I've seen throwing knives in advertisements, but they were all ugly and 'imported.' Those ones of Iggy's look to be "a little" more than $15.95 + taxes + S&H!
Pretty knives none the less. ALL the knives up there are nice. I really like the one Shari Moon uses in those Rob Zombie movies, although I'm not a fan of licking human blood off a razor sharp Bowie.
But, obviously somebody sells them?

Not a Bowie, but how about a Toothpick?

"Ned Kelly Toothpick", semi custom by B. W. Baker/Svord of New Zealand.

It's a big one.

Don't know why but I want to see some very large knives, Bowie Knives with over 10" long blades. I know you folks have some to show me. Over the years, I have seen pictures of some nice Randall's, but they aren't the only makers of nice knives. I just looked at their online catalog at some of their Bowie's: Smithsonian, Confederate, and Raymond Thorp knives. Please show us some large Bowie knives even if you made them yourself.

The very first Bowie knife was made here where I live, Avoyelles Parish Louisiana.

The Kabar Becker BK9 Combat Bowie, second from right, is my only knife that bills itself as a Bowie. “Combat Bowie” is a bit of a misnomer, but it is a lot of fun in camp. It is only 9”, though. I don’t have any knives with longer blades.

The Skrama, on the right, looks bigger, but that is mostly handle. That blade is only 9”, too, but it chops more like a 13” machete.

My other big knives, the Anza and the SYKCO, are more like 8”.

I don't think that either of these really qualify as Bowie Knives, but I figured that I'd throw them in anyway, especially since other folks have already deviated even further with bayonets and swords...

The Rothco Ramster (a Buckmaster 184 clone) and a SW3B M9 Bayonet, both with Bowie-style clip point blades, 7-½" and 8" in length respectively.

THanks for the links. They are very interesting and informative. Sound like the first Bowie knives probably had wood handles. But, when I think of a Bowie knife, I see one with a stag handle in my mind. If I ever get one, that is what I would look for. Mule Packer's and TEXASJakes's knives fit that bill for me.

Cheap Pakistani Bowie - this burned up in my 2018 fire, too:

Forte SW - where did you get that stainless knife? The only one I have ever seen like that was custom made by a very skilled gunsmith and knifemaker at a store called the Gun & Tackle Store on Forest Lane in Dallas, Texas. Early to mid 1980s. Made for a former Army special operator headed for Nicaragua to fight the Contras. Amazing knife and yours is ever so similar!!!

I have a few, but these are my favorites:

The top one ( I know, not big enough to qualify for the thread) is my very first, made from a CVA kit when I was 24. I replaced the walnut grip with elk stag when I was about 30.

The middle one is my very favorite. My dad found a Western bowie blade at a gun show for 20 bucks. It was in rough shape, but he bought it and sent it to me when I lived in Idaho. He said he hoped it would make a fun project, and it did. I bought the guard in the rough from Dixie Gun Works. This was about thirty years ago.

The bottom one was made by my friend Kip, and he sold it to me for $70. I recently gave it to our other friend Martin for Christmas. He didn't have one, and I told him every man should own at least one Bowie knife.
