Default UPDATED: Received my CMP Round 3 Service Grade

Updated in post #25:

I sat out Round 1 & 2 but was impressed enough from what I saw I decided to participate in Round 3 even with the price increase.

Sent my packet in September 1st and received my RGN email on October 3rd (33013). I received a call from CMP on October 5th and requested a Service Grade. I received a ship notice email on October 6th and picked it up from my local FFL on October 7th. Based on what I was seeing from Round 1 & 2, Round 3 is moving along quite swiftly.

It may be a little thing but I was impressed with the CMP marked pistol case that it was shipped in.

UPDATED: Received my CMP Round 3 Service Grade-img_2476-jpg

The serial number indicates a RR frame and it has a Colt slide. The barrel appears to be a 1985 replacement. Otherwise, I couldn't tell you how "correct" the other parts may or may not be but I've included the attached pictures for input from those more knowledgeable than I.

I would have been all over one of these, but the fact that they won't accept a C&R FFL on a clearly C&R firearm just left a bad taste in my mouth!

So that's not how the CMP works by Congressional edict. Even a 01 FFL has to go through the CMP process to purchase, has nothing to do with recognizing a C&R or not.

I've bought about ten firearms through the CMP in the past 20 years and I've always used my C&R as my Proof of Participation in a Marksmanship or other Firearm Related Activity

Very Nice - Congratulations. If you want to research parts made by the different war manufacturers go to Ty's Coolgunsite (on line). Lots of good information. Design of parts changed throughout the war. Especially the small parts like hammer, safety, mainspring cover (back strap), trigger, slide release. Most changes had to do with changing from crosshatched (checkered) machining to serrated.

Just leave like it is a real G.I. issue 1911A1. Mine is a RemRand frame with Ithaca Slide. Some are marked rebuilds and many are not marked at all. Congrats mine is a good shooter .

Looks good to me. I handled several of them back in my youth. The funny thing was the 1911's were all made before I was born.

2 background checks and an FFL transfer fee make no sense. The CMP made up their own rules for the 1911's.

Congrats on your low number and M1911A1 score.

Here is an article on how all of this came about. It was from the big time assistance of an Alabama Represenative. The naysayers of the CMP should read this as opposed to blaming the CMP for the ridiculous requirements of our Congress.

Honestly, it's just not that big a deal. From the day I mailed my packet to the day I received my 1911 was 37 days. I showed the local FFL my CHL, 5 minutes filling out the paperwork, and 20 bucks for the transfer. Having ordered several rifles from the CMP, I found the any changes to the 1911 process pretty insignificant.

I've not had it to the range yet but it cleaned up quite nicely.

I have a gentleman who has reached out to me who has a Service Grade with a Colt Frame and a Remington Rand slide, the opposite of what I have. He's asking if I'd like to trade slides so he would have a Colt slide for his Colt frame, and I'd have a RR slide for my RR frame.

Hmmm, I'm giving it due consideration.

I had lottery number 2927 in the first round. A very low number. I think they started the numbers at 1000. Anyway, mine took over 6 months from mailed in to getting it. Glad to know they’ve sped up the process.

Correct. The CMP isn't charging anyone for the NICS. Once it gets to your FFL you'll have to pay for the adm. cost of a transfer. But that happens for any FFL transfer. You get to choose the FFL you use. Mine charged me $25.

Not seeing a huge difference when I purchased mine. Transfer fee was the same.

As my dear old departed mom would say, some people would complain if they were being hung with a new rope.

About the only advantage an 03 FFL would have is the transfer fee if they shipped it directly to you, the 03 FFL. They qualify as relics for sure but I don't think the CMP's has that authority when shipping.

If they did they would.

I have a RR frame and a Colt slide. The Colt frame is going to be harder to find. The numbers of Colt pistols delivered to the Army were considerably fewer than RR pistols. I think I read someplace that RR delivered the largest number of pistols by a large margin. I have that info someplace but I think it's packed away in moving boxes.

I got it cleaned and lubed for a run through at the range. I set up at 15 yards and ran one magazine through to get a feel for it and see how the sights lined up. Not bad, and it functioned flawlessly through a box of 50 rounds.

I'm firmly in the Browning High Power camp for older service pistols, but every time I see one of those 1911s it takes me back to my one and only tour during my Navy career when I got to play with firearms. 1911s, M-14s and some shotguns. We had fun! I remember shooting a Colt at one point, but my regular issue was a RR.

To me it wouldn't matter what parts are in it . You got a piece of history that screams US military . As the saying goes , if only it could tell the stories of where it's been and the fights it's been in .

UPDATE:

I have been corresponding with a gentlemen who is an avid Colt aficionado, specifically with Colt 1911's. He was looking for a USGI M1911A1 Colt slide that was manufactured in 1945 and in very good condition to fit to a project he was working. My very nice Colt slide seemed to fit the bill, and interestingly, he had an original 1945 USGI Remington Rand slide that was also in excellent condition. We swapped some pictures and eventually decided to send each other our slide for a hands on examination, agreeing at any time either of us didn't want to go forward with the an exchange we would stop the deal.

As it turns out, he was very pleased with my Colt slide and I was quite impressed with the Remington Rand slide so we worked out an agreeable exchange. I'm quite pleased with the RR slide which mates to my RR frame perfectly. I just like the idea of having both a RR frame and slide.

I took it to the range a few days ago and it shot quite well.

Wow, I like the Remington Rand slide. Appears to me that both upper and lower are original finish and match up great.

I agree, though, I'd prefer a matching frame and slide over a mixed pair. You were fortunate to find a slide in such good condition.
