The drip rifle: the ingenious saviour of Gallipoli's withdrawing diggers
A very interesting piece of history. Quite ingenious.

Like the old saying goes, it's not stupid if it works!

Long ago when I was in college, I did a term research paper for my Naval Science course (I was in Navy ROTC) on the WWI Dardanelles campaign. It was an object lesson on how to screw up an amphibious landing. The manpower, resources, and planning were there but the intelligence wasn’t. The British completely misjudged the tenacity of the Turks. It was assumed by all that the Turks would turn tail and run when they saw the British assault fleet coming, but instead they did just the opposite. Consequently, the British and Anzacs, unprepared for the level of resistance they encountered, never got off the beach despite later pouring in hundreds of thousands of additional troops. By far the best coordination work of the campaign exhibited by the British was its efficiency in evacuating a half-million of their troops.

Inability of the Allies to clear mines in the Strait denied the landing parties navel support which might have diverted Turkish forces that went instead to the landing areas.

Operation was pure arrogance discounting the ability of the Turks and German advisors.

All gave some...some gave all. Private Ellsworth Asher Alderson, Co. B, 55th Battalion, S.O.S., mustard gassed in France, August, 1918 but survived (permanently disabled).
