I'm in the mood to get a new deer rifle but I'm a little bored with bolt actions. Bolt rifles are the most popular by a big margin for several good reasons but I always enjoyed doing things a little different from everyone else. I'm not too crazy about autoloaders or single shots and I a scope and pretty good long range accuracy and trajectory. So all I can think of is the Remington 760 pump and the Browning BLR lever action, any thoughts on these guns or any others?

I had and recently sold a 760 (to a forum member). .30-06 with a fixed-power scope. Hell of a nice rifle. Accurate. Fast follow-up if you needed it. If I lived in an area where rifle hunting was legal, I'd still have it.

I carried a Remington 760 in .30-06 on my first deer hunt. I didn't own it but took a "like'n" to it.
Didn't get a deer...but always wish I had one of them rifles.

Well, you could always get a nice double rifle.
A good friend of mine just picked up a nice used Pedersoli .45-70 double rifle. I honestly don't know if anyone is currently importing them, or if Pedersoli is still making them (not listed on their website). Remington and CZ are currently importing some double rifles and O/U's too...
Another thought on the more modern side would be the Mauser 96 if you can find one. It has an action a lot like a Winchester-Lee rifle- a straight pull rifle that "pivots."
If you want something vintage, a Winchester 1895 might be in order- .303 British, 7.62x54 Russian, .30 Krag, .30-06 or .405 Winchester might be in order.
Or, how about a Swiss straight pull rifle? I've thought about one of those myself. I've heard of some people doing some custom work on them and supposedly, someone in the club has one converted to .45-70.
Just suggestions.

Browning BAR Safari ?
Calibers from .243 up to .338 WM.
I have a "Lightweight Stalker" (composite stocks). Only because the price was right.
The Safari, in my opinion is a looker. Probably also available in high grade or graded wood stocks.
My BAR is more accurate than I am, and I've had a couple 1" at 100 yd ( 1moa) three round groups with it.

Brownings are a great choice. I'd opt for a steel receiver model however.
I have a Remington 740 in '06. Apparently they are hit or miss, but mine's one of the good ones.
I even have an old Ruger mini 30 that flings a 150g bullet accurately. Good lightweight, small rifle. Plenty for deer & hogs.

This was dads rifle, a 760 remington. I inherited it and didnt play with it untill last year. 30-06 with a peep. I have many other rifles, so had neglected it, It sure surprised me! Might start packing it more! Dad shot his last nice buck with it at 86 or 87 years old!

Well,
If you wanted to go "retro" the 95 Winchester or a 99 Savage has an abundance of way cool! The slides are pretty rare anymore in great shape. But they too have a high cool factor! One of my Dad's best friends was a little guy of Sicilian background, raised in the "patch" in Chicago. A handball player of some renown, as well as THE most competent bantam weight boxer I ever witnessed! I saw him kick more a** than any two guys twice his size! But I digress, sorry?
My Dad, a trained pre-war musical instrument maker (Slingerland Drum) took the project under his wing of making his friend a rifle that would fit his stature. A Winchester Model 100 in .308 was the choice. Dad's work turned out a shorter than "youth" sized stock for his friend. And one of the prettiest finishes and recoil pad installs I ever saw. I recall my Dad's friends Son being under typical stature as well. I sure hope he's got his Fathers rifle somewhere special?

In the right hands, a pump is almost as fast for the second shot as an autoloader. Less to break, less to get gummed up in cold weather, not dependent on the ammo for cycling.
I hunt with a friend who has one and has taken many deer with it. The 760/7600 series Remingtons are fine firearms.

Pumps are fine, however there is also much to be said for the lever action. A Marlin 30-30 or .35 would be another choice, or a Win 94 if you are sure you won't want a scope.

I shot my first deer with a Marlin 336 30-30. Great gun,I wish my son would "loan" it back to me.

Bored with a bolt gun?
If you call accuracy, simplicity, ease of maintenance and a good trigger boring, I see your point. Detail stripping a BLR will definitely add a little excitement to your life! Same with the Sako Finwolf (it may be worse).

I like to switch over to my 35 Rem 336 quite often during deer season. Light and quick. With the new Hornady Leverevolution ammo they can be very accurate out to 200 yards.
I love the BLRs shot many a hog with a 223 model very nice.
Have owned two 7600s one in '06 and the other in 35 Whelen. Only sold them because I wanted something else more and the Whelen was a bit expensive and tough on the shoulder. Again very quick and accuracy is fine.
I understand your boredom, sounds like a good excuse to buy two new guns!!!

+10 on Savage 99; I have one in .250 and one in 300. The 250 is ok for deer out to 200 if every thing works right. The .300 is deer and elk deadly but I don't try anything beyond 300.
+ a bunch on a 95 Winchester original in one of the 30 calibers. They sling a heavy bullet better than the 300 Savage though they are all about the same power bracket. The .30-40 is the most difficult to get ammo/components for but I am tickled pink with mine. I had to have the barrel sleeved but end result is excellent. 4" at 200 yards with original King iron sights and my 62 year old eyes.

Enjoy being a little "different" but still desire good trajectory and long range terminal performance?
Sounds like you need a Winchester Model 88 chambered in .284 Winchester.
Of course, finding one will probably keep you occupied for a while.
After that, find yourself a Winchester Model 71, but please, please do not "side mount" a scope on it.

Just bought a 760, 06. Very solid rifle made in 1969. The new ones are the 7600 I believe.

Whatever it is, your German Shorthair has made a serious error in judgement!
The Remington pump is pretty neat. Very fast guns. I prefer the older Model 141 in 35 Remington, myself...
Or for something really neat, a Remington Model 8, in 35 Remington...

My best buddy in the whole wide world bought a BLR in 7MM WSM. I think we loaded some Hornady or Sierra 150's on top of 4831 and fooled around with charge and seating depth and got it down to about 1/2" for a 3 shot group center-to-center at 100 yards and about 1 1/4" at 200 IFRC and we both thought that was just "stupenDOUS"

+1 for the BLR!
I have one of the older steel receiver models in 308 Win. It will shoot right along with any decent off the rack bolt gun. The local toy story had a steel receiver one in .257 Roberts recently, but I passed and let someone else get lucky. The new chambering in 450 Marlin certainly looks intriguing !

I'm not an expert on lever actions (my best friend uses a Browning BLR in .270 wsm and has killed alot of deer with it)but the NEW .338 and .308 Marlin Express rifles look quite nice. I like stainless steel and laminated, or fiber stocks, just wipe them down and put them away. My two Sako 75 Deluxes never make it out of the safe, because I'm afraid I'll get a scratch in the stocks.

I inherited this Savage lever gun when dad passed away:
I like the delicate cut of the forearm. I haven't put a scale to it, but was a little surprised by how light the trigger pull is. I have no idea if he had it worked on, any idea what they are from the factory?

Marlin 336CS .35 Rem
Or, like 35Rem, a Remington Model 8 also in .35 Rem.

How about something like this, a 250/3000 for the plains, and a 30/30 for the woods. 99EG and 99T.

In our younger days, when we hunted in Utah and Montana, Mrs. Monte, my wife, had a Remington 7400 .270 for deer hunting. ALWAYS got her deer with one shot. What can I say, she grew up on a farm in Montana.

My favorites are a Marlin Lever in 375 Winchester and a Winchester Model 88 in 308. Can't beat either one IMHO.
