My nephew dragged me into the modern world of optics by giving me this Trijicon-equipped Gen 5 Glock 19 this Christmas.

I like it.

I’m still getting used to not chasing the dot around. The gun worked as expected - 150 rounds of mixed ball and hollowpoints. No issues there.

I’m neither a Glock fanboy nor a hater. I carried a Model 27 for many years as a backup and off-duty gun. I really like this set up.

That's a fine setup and should serve you well. That Trijicon is one of the best. Some say the MRD is the future, some say it's already here. I'm not so sure yet but I did finally put one on top of an H&K VP9 just to try it out. There's a learning curve for sure. I find that I hit far better and probably faster with the red dot at distances beyond 10-15 yds.. Up close, say 5 yards or so, I'm not sure they make much difference. I'll continue to work with it. Time will tell, but I think that, once learned, these things will be the way to go - kind of like scopes becoming more common on rifles after WWII. Now everybody uses 'em!

Nice setup, I prefer my optic guns with more barrel. I consider Glock 17 length as a minimum.

Just built a 2nd slide with a threaded barrel I already had for my G17 (a Gen 2!). Slide from AIM Surplus came cut (RMR) for an optic: upper parts kit was ~$40. Steel optics height sights another $40. Primary Arms New Classic Reflex Mini mounted right up and was easily co-witnessed.

Shoots like a dream and very accurate. Like having a 2nd gun: a G17 MOS at half the price.

Cheers!

P.S. I was extremely impressed with the quality machining and finish (DLC) of the AIM Surplus slide: so much that I bought a similar one for a G19.

That is a nice rig, and a better Nephew. I was never a big fan on handgun optics unless for specific purposes - for me, a couple hunting handguns. As my eyes have gotten older, I seem to find more and more red dots popping up on my sidearms. I still haven't taken the plunge to SD carry with an optic. I attached a pic of a Glock model 41 MOS (.45 acp) that I attached a Vortex Razor too. Its an accurate shooting machine.

Fiddlesticks, I say! I already done caved in by buyin' one of those bottom-feeding, tactical tupperware guns that y'all can load up on Sundee n' shoot all week long, so I ain't about to go droppin' anymore lettuce on a newer gun with one of those stinkin' new-fangled viewfinder apparatus screwed on top! I barely trust the crazy gizmo to function on it's own with all them springs inside makin' it load ammo all by itself like it does, let alone with somethin' else goin' on up top!
If I need anythin' else to help me aim, then I'd get me one of those high-tech laser beams that everyone kept done tellin' me that I needed eight years ago!

Now get off my lawn, you darn whippersnappers! Or else I'll be getting my 12 Gauge n' given y'all a dusting of rock salt, ya hear?!

That’s some nephew! :) I don’t like Glock pistols, but if I received one like yours, I’m sure I wouldn’t complain. :D

I’m having a rough time adapting to red dots. I’ll admit I haven’t worked diligently to try to master the process of picking up the dot quickly. So far, in my limited attempts, it slows me down. At close range, I’d rather not have one. At anything 15-yards or more, I definitely see an advantage in precision. Maybe that scenario will change for the better as time goes on. Currently my red dots are on a 6-1/2” 629 Classic (great for 100-yard targets) and a 365XL. The 365XL impresses me with how easy it is to shoot accurately with the red dot.

I put another hundred rounds through it today. I’m liking it more and more.

Instead of chasing the dot around I just look for the iron sights and the dot is right there. Works really fast, and I think soon it will be second nature.

My nephew is really more of a son. He lived with us since his Dad died when he was 16.

What is a little different at first for us old timers that are used to iron sights is we have spent years focusing on the front sight. With an optic, open both eyes and focus on the target. It feels weird but after a few hundred rounds it feels pretty good.

Pretty common, and consistent with my own experiences. I was trained in a pure Gunsite front sight environment. The process of transitioning on a Glock was pretty ugly. My first effort was using an Aimpoint Micro, which was too high. Even by adding a suppressor height front sight, I did not do well. Switching to the Aero helped a lot, as it was a lot lower and closer to the sights. The difference in objective terms is really small, but it made it a lot better for me.

I have seen references from people who know more than I do that 1000 dry fire presentations is minimal and 5000 better. I find that plausible. I also found that my Shield w/RDS was easier to shoot well. I would prefer a bigger dot than the typical 3-4 MOA; a typical front sight takes up about 10 MOA or a little more, so a bigger dot would be faster too.

That's a nice gun, and a nicer nephew! I have one Glock, a .40 Caliber, I think it's a 23 3rd gen. It's a very nice-shooting pistol, and with 5 13-round mags, it's enough, more than enough, for any what ever I should rid my presence of. Actually it's a very nice gun. I just like revolvers more.
Ya think I could borrow your nephew for a while!?
Peace!
