It's a competition gun, designed to be shot real fast. To make it happen, they came up with a completely new design with an inverted hammer above the barrel, which allows the bore axis to be lower than on any other pistol. A *lot* lower. But does it have to be so expensive because of that? Part of the high cost is the fact that the mechanism is much more complicated than your usual Browning locked breech design (it's also gas-delayed), but another major part is that the Alien is made to an extremely high standard of quality, it's up there among the best of the best custom 1911/2011 pistols and other high-end firearms.

Here's a picture of an all-black Alien next to a Predator, which is a very fast competition gun, but with a "normal" bore axis. Check out the location of the muzzle of each pistol in relation to the shooter's hand. The Alien pushes straight back, there's very little muzzle rise.

I have one and they are are a great pistol for competition. They combine race gun speed with a very good trigger and Bullseye accuracy.

Sure they are expensive but serve a purpose, certainly not for everyone.

Here is a picture showing the low bore axis better, actually a little under your shooting grip.

Cool design exercise of form follows function.

I have one of the first run released here in the USA only because one could pay half down and the other half on delivery. The design is a version of the HK P7 piston design, but with the piston on top.

They are amazing to shoot and just the other day I let one of the young guys at my local gun store shoot it. They have a 50 foot range behind the store and I stayed inside (talking, of course) while he stepped out and fired a magazine full.

He came back in and said, "name your price!" and had put the entire magazine into one ragged hole. He actually said, "just stay here while I go to the bank." Of course, I had to decline the offer. As has been discussed recently here in a thread on the Drake, there are a few firearms out there that are exceptional for the niche they occupy. There is a reason that ice cream comes in BOTH vanilla and chocolate.

Super picture. The Alien has the barrel where other guns have their recoil assembly. I would love to own one as I have a major weakness for guns with "different" operating systems.

I for one. In fact, I've got a couple of them. I love it so much, that I bought a blacked out model when they were imported last year. Why would I want every caliber of a Glock or M&P instead of an Alien is more the question, as far as I'm concerned.

They are awesome, well built pistols. I was just shooting one this afternoon.

So at least three members of this forum have opened their homes to an alien.

They actually aren't a ton of money when it comes to top competition pistols. They just get more publicity than most and people freak out when they see the price.

You can top a heck of a lot more than the Alien's price for some high end competitive handguns.
