Hope this is right location. Not really a knife but made by knife company (I think). Hopefully there are some axe/hatchet aficionados here that can help me. My Canadian hunting buddy gave me an old axe to keep handy in my UTV. This winter I decided to rehang it and clean it up. If I remember correctly it had a 22” handle which I replaced with a 19”. When cleaning up head I noticed it was stamped Old Hickory. I assumed it was from same line as Old Hickory cutlery made by Ontario Knife. They are a local western NY co. I’ve searched and searched but can find no information or indication that they ever made axes. I’m wondering if it’s a Canadian manufacturer. My buddy does not remember where he got it. Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes, I’ll auction it off with that provenance. Opening bid $2500. It’s a piece of American history

That's a Dayton pattern axe head. I did a little more digging...

Supplee Hardware held the trade name "Old Hickory" and used it on their axes.

Yesteryearstools (dot com) is an excellent resource for info about old axes and hatchets.

See this page (near the bottom): Supplee Hdw. Co.

Thanks for all the info. Yes they are addicting. I rehung 5 over the winter. Then I bout 2 Harbor Freight hatchets and started messing around customizing them. My wife is impressed but can’t figure out what I’m going to do with them lol. She says the same thing about my vintage outboards.

So I just went to that site and they reference Gowonda and Dunkirk NY. Those are both about an hr S West of Buffalo. I’m northeast. So that would make sense that this axe was in this area.

I had this axe on the mantle for decades,,
then I looked it up on eBay,,,

One day, I found my shop axe was another,, so, I have TWO of them,,

Hard to believe two old axes are worth as much as some S&W revolvers,,

Cool ! I bought 4 old axes off Craigslist and one was a plumb with original handle and sticker. Handle was cracked and I had to replace but I kept the original. The other score in the group was a Kelly. Those two alone were worth the $30 I paid.

S&W chad, I think you have a problem. I just sold a Sauer axe head a couple weeks ago, bought a couple Harbor Freight hand axes for around here in the vehicles, have maybe five or six other axes, long and short handled, but man, you have more axes than I have S&W revolvers, not by much, though.

That is the very axe carried across the Appalachians in 1780 by my greatx5 Grandaddy! The head has only been replaced 3 times, and the handle 6!

You don't sound like a man contemplating a move...;):D
