This is the gun. I'm replacing some parts (mag follower; stock safety for large safety; volquartsen extractor). Plus putting a picatinny rail for a QD illuminated sight. Question is, what kind of sight would you recommend? Red dot? Low power scope with illuminated reticle?

If red dot? Which? If scope, which? Thanx.

I'm a fan of Aimpoint RDS. Too bad they don't make bigger dots; for most of my uses a 6-8 MOA would be better than smaller, and I think for what you are doing, the same applies (because the bigger dot will be faster to pick up and small enough to be precise).

I can’t tell what brand and model shotgun you have but I assume even with slugs your shots will be under 100 yards. A red dot 🔴 could work if you don’t have astigmatism. A red dot may blur out in bright light too. You might look at a prism sight with an ACSS reticle. These can be found in 1x, 2.5x, 3x, and 5x.

I believe Primary Arms has the 2.5x on sale for a Benjamin and a Grant.

I have a Benelli with "Ghost Ring" sights,,
This has become my everything shotgun, the other three just collect dust.

Shoot a ghost ring equipped gun somewhere, they are addictive,,

Also, I have read two defensive shotgun instruction books, both list the ghost ring type sight as #1,,

I have become extremely happy with the Holosun Reflex sights. In particular the HE510C-GR that has a green reticle, and your choice of 3 different reticles. 2moa dot/65moa circle or both combined. Great battery life and lots of user selectible
options.

I've done a lot of hog hunting. NVGs/thermals are hard to beat.

What kind of ranges are you expecting? Are you going to be using slugs.

Wow a hog nite hunt! Gonna be fun. Not done that but here's my thoughts. All depends how many $$$ ya wanna put in. First get a GOOD light. Adjustable beam good idea. Used one shown alone at nite on AR with optic lighted center dot out to 300yds with good hits. 24in barreled Benelli with fiber optic sights added to rib sighted in with Winchester slugs on 2'x2' steel 60yds no problem but was daylight. Use red dots on PCC 9m/m no magnification to 75yds 6in steel offhand. You know your eyes so act accordingly. Good light mounted to tube with pressure switch would be first. Curious...shooting from static position? Get that 870 pumping! Good luck...

A Remington 870 Express. It's a fine shotgun but is the budget version of my 80s era 870 Wingmaster left handed shotgun.

It was suggested I replace the extractor and the mag follower as the budget versions have been known to cause problems.

I don't have astigmatism and will definitely look at your recommendation. Thanks.

Don't plan on slugs for now. Buckshot for hogs. Coyote loads. Ranges under 100 yards.

Low light…something that magnifies light. Most red dots will cast enough light toward you and won’t magnify light to the point you will have less visibility during low light.
