What you're looking at is the right side of a Beretta Model 70S .22 - I hope some of it is legible.

I'm curious about the Berben Corporation importer markings, and NY, NY of all places.

"Ber" has to be the first syllable of Beretta. Rumor has it that some three letter agency created this entity to bring guns into the country but I'm not buying that, it sounds "internetty urban legendie" to me but, hey, anything is possible.

Comments? Stories? Legends and lies? :D

You probably already saw this, but I found the following info on the AK Forum.

Looking for Pre Ban Beretta AR70 info | AK Rifles

The following are excerpts from Berben Corporation v. United States. a late 1950's court case regarding import tariff values of Beretta pistols.

Decided September 27, 1960

The plaintiff’s first witness, Harry Litwin, testified in substance as follows: Since 1951, he has been a member of the bar of the State of New York; that the Berben Corporation was organized by his office and he has been treasurer of the corporation since its organization.

The Berben Corporation was the exclusive distributor in the United States of Beretta products.

Dr. Beretta was owner of 50 per centum of the stock in the Berben Corporation, the other 50 per centum being owned by the estate of Bennett G. Galef, Bennett G. Galef having been the owner until his death in an airplane accident in February 1959.

Although containing nothing pertainat to the AR70. The court fillings establish a time frame for incorporation of BERBEN NY. NY. As well as an exclusive distributorship of Beretta pistols, possibly including other products threw, but possibly not limited to September 27, 1960.

Berben corporation is a New York Domestic Business Corporation filed On February 20, 1952. The company's filing status is listed as Inactive.

I didn't see anything about the CIA, FBI, ATF or NSA.

I did see that but after having been reminded only very recently about posting things from other Forums I let it go. :D I literally a got a "Read the Rules" text from one of your moderator colleagues. ;)

More importantly, however, I was thinking about doing a corporate record check in New York State but I got distracted and forgot to do it. Well done Chad!

Berben Corp was the importer of Beretta firearms until the mid-80s, around the time Beretta USA was established in Accokeek, MD. I’ve owned two Beretta AR70s, one was a Berben Corp import and one was Beretta USA.

Thanks for clearing that up. Some "gunshow commando" told me a great while back: "Beretta was the importer of Benelli guns for awhile and needed a name for the Feds." Since I heard nothing to the contrary I accepted the "usual gunshow bullchips" explanation. Joe

Just took a look at mine -
All it says on the RH side of the Slide is - ‘Made in Italy.’
You guys mentioned all those different folks-
What about the Mossad?
They reportedly used some 70s’.
As I have posted, I like mine way better than I thought I would.

After pm'ing with ISCS Yoda. I show my 2. The older mdl 948 was Dad's purchased in 1951. No slide hold open and heel clip magazine retainer. Both sights on slide.
My mdl 71 Jaguar. Slide holds open on last shot. Front sight on barrel, rear sight on slide. Push button magazine release. Cross bolt in top of frame allows cocked and locked

Both have aluminum frames with steel slides.

My 1985 Model 92 FS Made in Italy has Berden Corporation Ny-NY in small letters on the right hand slide. Hardly noticeable. They were the importer prior to the US Military Contract for the Model 92. As I understand it The contact specified that by a certain date the Beretta militray pistols had to be made in the US. That is the reason for the Maryland factory being built.

A while back I was at a Gun-show digging through a box of used Mags.
I see that distinctive Italian Boot, bingo!
Beretta 22! I ask the Dealer Dude if he knows what’ll fit, he didn’t.
So I bought it.
It’s a 10 shot longer than my 8 shot 70s Mags.
Made for the longer frame 71 I think.
But it functions perfect in my 70s.
