So I'm sorta in the market for a low-cost small .45 (I've got a CS45 for carry) -- just for "why not?"
Thinking of a Taurus PT145 Pro or Springfield Armory XD-S 45 3.3. (And yeah, if I hadn't off-loaded my .45 Shield years ago I wouldn't be in the market at all.)
I'd do another Shield in a heartbeat but I'm trying to keep the price under $300 so the S&W seems sorta outa my range for now.

Anyone have any experience with either of these two, or another semi-decent brand. Not looking for a hammer-fired, striker is just fine this time around.

I carried an early XD-S 45 for a while and liked it but I sent it in for the trigger recall and it came back with a horrid trigger, gave it to my brother when I got a P365. Don't think you will find one for $300 though.

FYI the Taurus PT145 would be included I think in their "settlement" over accidental discharges. Some would call it a "recall" but technically it wasn't.

Factory parts and service would be unavailable and if sent in for "inspection" under the settlement it would not be returned to you. Under the terms of the settlement they would send you a current compact 9mm (G3C) as they no longer make a compact .45.

I rather like them, but under the circumstances...hard pass.

Not a bad gun. But given the situation I'd avoid it.

I have an XDS .45. It’s a nice little gun, lacking only a thumb safety (in my opinion). If that doesn’t bother you, or maybe I should say, if you prefer it that way, I think you would be pleased with one. They are not worth a lot on the used market. I would not be surprised if you could find a very nice one for around $300. I bought mine new and have had zero issues with it. Trigger on mine is a typical plastic gun trigger - not terrible, like the first M&Ps and early Glocks, but nothing to write home about, either. The grip safety is a non-issue, for me. I don’t particularly like it, but it causes no trouble.

I have a XDs 45 also. It is scary accurate and problem free. I bought it used a few years ago at the $300+ price. Not having a thumb safety is not a problem for me. It shoots every type of ammo I've tried including my reloads. I carry it in a Cooks kydex holster with ease. I have 7rd, 6rd and 5rd magazines that all work, again without any problems. The 2 dot rear and green front sight are nice for my eyes. Check them out and shoot one and make your decision. Good luck

I got a Springfield XD....

....9mm for my son. It's a fine gun, quality build, operates perfectly and we don't have any gripes with it.

MY problem is that I can't shoot it well at all. Maybe it's because I shoot mostly S&Ws and am just not used to it.

We also got him a Taurus 9mm. The build is not quite as good as the Springfield, in fact the slide is a little loose, but there are no problems with it. I would buy one for a kick around gun.

At your price range I'd consider the Taurus. When I'm looking for a low price I go to Gunbroker and find a decent used one. I've go a .380 Shield on the way right now.

Just bought an xds45 mod2

I actually just bought an xds45 mod 2 about a month ago. Aside from my pinky hanging off the bottom with the flush fit mags, I cant complain about anything else. Doesn't kick nearly as much as one would expect and it seems to be built like a tank. Theres a guy on another forum who was testing his with 45 super with his gun being bone stock and it held up as though it was made for it. I'm not recommending anyone do that, but it speaks to the build quality. That all said, I have not and will not carry it. This is strictly because I see no reason to carry anything other than my shield45. If you're trying to keep the price on the lower side, I know you can find a shield 45 for around 300 350 if you look for it, but you definitely cant go wrong with the Springfield.

A Google search might turn up the member on here who has a PT145 and says it works really well. Cannot recall their handle.

Both pistols that you have mentioned have had issues/recalls on them in the past.

The XDS has a defined serial number range that was effected, so I would recommend trying to find one outside of that serial number range. Also, look for a roll pin in the grip safety, as that is a sign that the recall work was done for those in the range. However, the recall on them was a while ago, so newer ones don't have that defect.

The PT-145 settlement effected all PT-145 pistols (along with a lot of other Taurus models of the time). If you want to go that route, I would try to find one that you can verify went back to the factory for inspection/rework.

I carried an early XD-S 45 for a while and liked it but I sent it in for the trigger recall and it came back with a horrid trigger, gave it to my brother when I got a P365. Don't think you will find one for $300 though.

I also bought a XDS 45 right after they came out. Great gun, really nice to shoot for a small 45. Unfortunately I sent mine in for the recall and when it came back the trigger was unbelievably bad compared to the way it was before. The gun still worked, but I was always annoyed by the degraded trigger pull. During one of the gun buying panics I sold it to a Deputy at work who wanted a small .45 for off duty carry for what I originally paid for it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one for sale around here (SE PA) for under $300.
