I use to collect carbines. Had all except an Irwin Pederson. Interests change and all are gone except an Inland that belong to my Uncle. He got it in the mid 60's for $20.00. The stock is marked O.G.E.K. in a box, that means Ogden Arsenal Elmer Keith.

Have a friend that has all the makers including an Irwin Pederson. His are in the rack on the end.

I hand picked this 1943 Rock Ola from the selection at the old Sherwoods store in the San Fernando Valley back in 1986. The owner had brought them in from Israel and the import stamp is very tiny and under the handguard. It is somewhat of a mixmaster which is correct given their service history and post war upgrades but does have mostly original parts other than a later stock.

They were running between $169 - $229 depending upon the manufacturer and condition. Wish I had had the money to have bought 10 of them.

I have wanted one for years, but would feel guilty for owning one since I am not a Marine.

My favorite thing that I have done with it was to take my retired Marine Colonel brother-in-law to the range and have him shoot it. We both had a blast that day.

First firearm I ever handled was the M-1 Carbine my old man brought back from WWII. Never got to fire it though.

Bought a Saginaw steering gear carbine about 12 years ago. One of the Blue Sky imports The stock was cracked so got a halfway decent deal on it. Right behind that dealers table was another dealer in stocks and other parts. So for $65 brand new birch stock and handguard went home plus some books she had dealing with carbines. This was before covid and rapid price increases and an not even thinking of selling. Reload for it on occasion with 110 grain bullets. Fairly accurate. Funny thing about it is that it has a Winchester barrel on it. Had a burr on the inside of the nag well and fired cases would hang up on the burr. Stoned the burr snd no more problems. Did replace both the piston and the threaded part and staked it in place. Course my el cheapo buddy wanted it but that never happened. Nice little carbines, who would thought that 80 years later they would still be that popular??. Frank

This is common among the various contractors, with very few producing 100% of the parts needed for a complete rifle. It's also a testimony to the VERY rigid standards that the Army imposed regarding specifications on those producing components.

My Standard Products for example uses an Underwood barrel, which is correct for the builds by SP.

A GREAT reference book is "US M1 Carbines, Wartime Production" by Craig Riesch. Available on Amazon in paperback it's easy to throw in a bag for when you're out hunting Carbines, parts, or accessories (and it covers them ALL with LOTS of detailed pictures).

Default M1 carbine national postal meter

I recently saw one for sale, and being totally unfamiliar with WW2 rifles. I wanted to find out more about the model M1. every site that has picture's of various M1's, they all had wood stocks on top of the barrel. the one that I'm looking at has a metal shield w/holes on it instead (cooling?). I cant find any models with this configuration. also this one is being offered for $1.900. at this moment I don't have any pics yet, but am working with the seller to send me more.

Just wanted to get anyone's opinion on this configuration and asking price. I'm assuming this would be a C&R qualifier?

At one time, the NRA published an informative booklet on the .30 Carbine that thoroughly covered the essentials and variations of the Carbine. Maybe they still do. There is also the military manual on the .30 Carbine which is TM 9-1276. It is easily available and worthwhile reading. Just google it. There are several other books that cover the fine details of its history, but I do not have any of those. There are not many carbines remaining which are in their original WWII configuration as most carbines in military inventories after the war ended were heavily modified and updated in military arsenals. Most contain mixtures of old and new parts from different manufacturers as the government was not concerned in the least about the whims of collectors 70 years later.

A metal hand guard is not correct for a U.S.GI M1 Carbine. It is a knock off made by a commercial company post war. $1900.00? No way Jose! Stay away. Maybe in the stupid price era we are in maybe $700. To me maybe $19.95.

It's been a looong time since I saw a even mostly GI carbine for south of a grand in AZ and for the last year or so I don't think I've seen one for under $1500. The reproductions and copies (National Ord., etc.) are getting $850.

When I first got into M1 Carbine collecting, I could buy them off of individuals at the gun shows for about $350-$400. That was better than the dealers were offering them. I bought two original M1A1's for $1400 about 10 years ago and thought that was high then, but it was commensurate with what they were going for at the time (look at the price of a M1A1 nowadays!). The cheapest I have seen a U.S. GI M1 Carbine go for in the last year is $1500.
I had one of every manufacturer and eventually my interests changed. Made a nice profit on the ones I had. I only have an U.S.GI M1 made by Inland now, my Uncle bought it for $20.00 about 1965.

More details would help. The perforated handguard fits an original military carbine but it will most likely be a Plainfield or other commercial replica. Some of these are good but not $1900 good…

I was a member of the Carbine Club when those came out. We were allowed to buy three for $350 a piece (still have the invoice some place).

My first Carbine was an Inland, bought from an ex-GI, liberated from the Army. That was in the late 1950s, for $40, including around 20 magazines, several thousand rounds of ammo, and quite a few spare parts. I still have it. Around 20 years ago, a friend bought a SSG Carbine in original WWII condition at an estate sale for $100. I offered him $1000 at the time and he wouldn't sell it.

I killed my first deer with a 30 carbine. Was using 110 grain Winchester hollow point ammo. One SMALL mule deer doe at 50 yards away. One broadside heart shot which stopped the bullet. Even though I was 12 years old, I was not impressed with the lack of killing power. The deer wasn't overly impressed either.

Mine is an Underwood!
I really enjoyed Chris Baker's series on the 30 Carbine. Here is a link:
https://www.luckygunner.com/lounge/category/m1-carbine/

I have an Aimpoint Red dot on mine.
I prefer Georgia Arms soft point ammo which sadly has not been available a long time. The PPU USA SP ammo is also very good.
There are 50 round boxes of Remington SP ammo at Sportsman's Warehouse in Greensboro. Excellent ammo costs nearly $100 a box, advertised at $1.96 per round.

There are several books on the M1 Carbine. The best of which is War Baby by Larry Ruth for the collector https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Boo...SABEgJtn_D_BwE and US M1 Carbines by Craig Reisch for the novice collector

I would get the Reisch book and study it before I bought anything. I still say stay away from the metel hand guarded Carine for $1900.00.

The main problem with reloading the .30 Carbine is that the cases must be trimmed frequently. I usually FL resize all fired cases first, then measure every case to determine which ones need trimming. I also have a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine, and even with it, the cases tend to grow. Some years ago, I got a super deal on pulled GI .30 Carbine bullets. I bought 5000 for a few cents each, still have several thousand of them. Have used them to load other .30 cartridges such as .30-30, .30 Remington, .303 Savage, .300 Savage, and .308.

I end up in discussions on Pistol Caliber Carbines often. My recommendation is always a M-1 Carbine! I still have a Marlin Camp 45 (set up the same as my M-1) and several Lever Action PCC's but I believe the 9mms and other PCCs are too anemic for serious defense.

I have two. A rebuilt 1944 IBM and a major overhauled 1943 IBM that was modified for the T-3 night scope.

My wife's upper body strength isn't sufficient for Mini-14's or AR-15's, but she does just fine with the M-1. It normal carbine sits in the gun safe with a 15 round mag loaded with Winchester SP ammo in the well, and 2 mags of the same in a pouch on the buttstock. If 45 round can't get us out of whatever mess we are in; I don't think anything could have! (at least without being belt fed)

Ivan

Even though I have fired a huge number of different ARs over the years, I have never personally owned, or even wanted, one. I prefer an M1 Carbine. I have told this story before, but I once worked with a retired Marine Colonel who saw a lot of action in both the Pacific War and Korea. He normally carried a Carbine and once told me that of all the enemy he shot with his Carbine, not a one of them ever got up.

I have two carbines. One is in the original 30 carbine configuration and the other is rebarreled to 5.7 Johnson. The 5.7 Johnson is a dang fine round for everything you might use a .223 for, within range. Pricey is the only other thing I can say for the cost of 5.7 ammo.

The original owner had it rebarreled to carry in his truck for shooting coyotes. The only time I've seen a coyote in the wild, the carbine was at home and I was 200 miles away

Here is Paul Harrell's take on the effectiveness of the 30 carbine.

M-1 Carbine Review: Power/Accuracy/Relevence - YouTube

Paul can be an acquired taste but he is thorough.

WW2 Germany is often credited for fielding the first, true "Assault Rifle", the MP-44. I think an M-2 Carbine, which was introduced around the same time, would have comparable ballistics. I guess the million-dollar question is the .30 Carbine round a pistol or intermediate cartridge ? Perhaps the US can lay claim to the first Assault Rifle ?

I own a Quality Hardware with an Inland barrel, #155XXX, all early features. No reason to think it went through a rebuild. Thing is, it is entirely blued. The bluing matches the bolt and various blued 15 rd mags. Were the early ones blued ?

I don't own one now, but have had two Universal copies in the distant past.

It was through reloading the little carbine that I came to discover H-110, started using it in my .44 Magnum revolvers, and have used it (for heavy loads) ever since.

Notice I had him add a small extra piece, a guard to stop the ejected brass from beating the scope so badly. Notice the scars on the scope tube from the brass impacts.

You will say that there are better ways of doing it nowadays. (You'd be right.) I will say that my system works quite well. I can shoulder and snap shoot very rapidly this way. I paid about 60 bucks to get this mount done. I think he had that Weaver mount and rings gathering dust in a drawer. I cannot remember what I paid for the scope but I seem to remember it was 60 bucks. It has a dial from high intensity 11 which works in the brightest sunlight down to 1 which is so dim I can use it in the dark. I routinely forget to turn it off at the end of a range day, so I also practice with the irons and keep spare coin batteries around.

I also have the M3 mag catch installed to run 30 round magazines. You can run extended mags without it, but you cannot run around while running those mags without it. Well... it does hold them a lot more securely anyway.

I have a 100% original Underwood with the early flip sight and push button safety. Never had the arsenal refurbish with bayonette lug, etc. Inherited from my father-in-law, A WWII Navy veteran. Fun little gun to shoot.

Every part is original? Those are few and far between.

I have a 43 Inland that I shoot and load for.

My dad was 3rd ID Army in Italy, France and Germany WW2. He had one but being a cook (everyone likes to eat) never used it in combat. Probably why he came back to raise a family.

I noticed that he never bought a surplus carbine. Instead he bought a surplus Enfield (303 Brit) and made a sporter to hunt deer. He shot more than a few with that one.

I have a 43 Inland that I've rebuilt, including the bolt. Shoots great. Not my idea of anything but a range toy.

I might shoot a deer with it in my back yard if I was starving however.

QH made only receivers. The QH carbines are found only with barrels from other manufacturers. There was great care taken among all of the Carbine manufacturers that parts would interchange among all of them. I am fairly sure QH also did parts assembly on their receivers.

Some of the very early Winchesters and Inlands were blued. Since parts were made at different times and by different manufacturers bluing/parkerizing colors rarely match in shades. When all of the shading matches, it usually means it has been reblued, usually post service.

I have a National Postal Meter that went through a post war rebuild at Atlanta Arsenal. It still has it’s original Marlin subcontract barrel. Everything else was replaced during the rebuild with all the standard post war upgrades. Fun little rifle to shoot. Easy caliber to reload for.

Most still have their original barrels. This is due to the fact that non-corrosive ammo was always used in these by the U.S.

And many of those original barrels are shot out. Not unusual to find a barrel that will measure 3 on a ME gauge. That one's used up. I had one and sold it. If you want a shooter buy one with a decent barrel. Otherwise be prepared for some surprises at the range.

Here's a M1 carbine made by Underwood and a Ithaca M1911, both manufactured in 1943.

I find the development history of the M1 carbine interesting study. It's well known that John Garand was the inventor or the M1 rifle, and John Browning was the inventor of the BAR and M1911, but in many accounts Marshall "Carbine" Williams gets credit for inventing the carbine even though he didn't invent it. He did hold the patent on the short-stroke-piston used in the carbine, and he was on the development team, but he was so hard to work with that the project manager banished him from the team at one point.

Over 25 years ago new or good condition barrels were still available reasonably priced, as were most parts. I built a Carbine of parts starting with a barreled action with a damaged barrel. I replaced that barrel with a new one. It was not too difficult to unscrew the old barrel from the receiver (actually the reverse, unscrew thevreceiver from the barrel) and install a new barrel. But the old barrel was screwed in really tight. I used some home-made tools to do it. I still have those tools but never used them again.

99.9% of "shot out" barrels are just "cleaned out". In another words a steel cleaning rod was dragged through the muzzle wearing to muzzle out. Same thing happens on Garands. Those are fixed by counterboring the muzzle about 1/2". Most military guns were cleaned more than they were shot. Throat erosion coupled with muzzle wear is a much better indicator of a shot out barrel.

I’ve owned two in the past, a Nat. Postal Meter and a Saginaw and ended up trading them off. Not a huge Carbine guy but kinda wish I’d kept one.

I have a fairly nice M1 Garland. But the muzzle was wallowed out by too-eager use of a cleaning rod. I did counterbore it as described. I think I used an 11/32" drill bit. I made a barrel cap guide out of aluminum to keep the drill bit straight. I did it a little shallower, about a quarter inch. No reason the same thing couldn't be done with a Carbine barrel having a wallowed-out muzzle.

Thought I’d put these on here. Back in late 60’s-70’s 30 Carbine ammo was pretty cheap, had cases of it. Lot got shot some traded and sold but always nice to have.

The neatest M1 Carbine that I ever saw belonged to a friend of my Dad's. He had been a co-pilot on either a B17 or B24, and was shot down over France and crash landed. He had brought a carbine aboard for just such a situation. A German patrol came upon them, and even though he was shot in the hand, he and his crew were able to fight off this patrol and escape after killing several of them. French partisans soon got them back across enemy lines, and even though they wanted to take his carbine while he was treated for his wound at an aid station he refused. He held onto that carbine and got it home after the war. He also had the glove he was wearing when shot, and displayed it along with his Purple Heart.
Great story!
