REMINGTON'S NEW HOME DEFENSE 870 WITH WALNUT - GREAT PRICE TOO!
I just watched this video and thought I'd post it. Apparently, Remington (the company that acquired them) has come out with their new 870, 18.5" barrel for Home Defense. It sports a Walnut stock and traditional finish. According to the review here it's flawless and the list price is only $459. That means it can be gotten for close to $400 after they hit the stores and are generally in stock.
My 870 was bought new about 20 some odd years ago and I didn't pay a whole lot less. Mine has the black synthetic stock which is not nearly as costly as the Walnut. I thought this was worth posting if anyone is in the market.

Nothing says “get off my lawn” better than a good 12 gauge riot gun!

Nice! About to pull the trigger on one myself but picked out the 26 inch barrel in 12 or 20 gauge for Upland hunting. Checked them out recently. looks nicer in fit and finish than the Express. Nice having walnut back too. Bass Pro Shop had em for $500. Nice to see the steel receiver and smoother action bars. Good luck with yours.

I was just checking them out on GB. You can pick one up in the mid $400's range. I had been thinking about a Maverick but I honestly prefer a wood stock. I do wish it had the corncob forend though.

This guy doing the video who works in a gun shop, alledgedly, didn't know that a Remington 870 without the plus 2 mag extension only holds 4 rounds in the magazine. That's been the way that 870's have been since they started. None of them hold 5 rounds with the standard magazine and screw on cap. Plus 2 adds that to a magazine for 6 rds total. That is a surprise for the narrator. Obviously not very knowledgable about the guns. If he has one that holds 5 in the magazine, then it has a 1 rd extension on the magazine as a cap. The other thing he omits is that the trigger guard is plastic. One still has to go to the Police version to get the aluminum trigger housing with no MIM parts in that housing or MIM extractor on the bolt. The price point is nice.

I sure hope they don’t use the “Insta-rust” finish the orig Remington started using in 2006 when FG acquired them. Have owned multiple 870s from that era with rust issues. It was like a Parker ovation but apparently wasn’t.

Hopefully the newer finish being applied to the 870 Fieldmaster version will be much more resistant to rusting. Heard they are also producing the 870 Wingmaster but cost will be around $800 or more.

I was pretty enthusiastic when I first looked into them. Just now realized they're not using walnut. Probably beech or something. Anyone know what country they're made in?

Dusting off an old design and a small update. The picture below is a copy of a USMC Remington Model 870 MK.1 The Corps adopted these in 1969. These held 8 rounds and had rifle sights, and also a bayonet lug. I used this one teaching a Combat Shotgun Course to the Sailors at Naval Station Long Beach, Ca. Found the barrel, extension and the adapter at a gunshow and bought an 870 Express. An original USMC M870 Mk.1 was sold by Morphy at auction about a year ago for $16,000.00.

I'll keep my Stevens 77E. I have always considered all pump shotguns to be more or less equivalent regardless of the name on the barrel.

Seldom are YouTube videos edited for accuracy or content. There are often better ways to get good information.

I was inside a Rural King store (in Ohio) for the very first time about two months ago and was impressed. I wish we had one here in San Antonio.

They have them in Pa. also. Their prices there were higher than in the LGS's. Lots of stuff (guns & ammo), but a bit pricer.

My wife was much impressed by all of the different types of candy they stocked. She bought $50 worth to take back to Texas. We didn't buy any chicks or bunnies.

You are right they do carry a bit of everything. My Daughter gets her chicks from Tractor Supply here, glad they are at her house. I believe there is a Rural King towards Orlando.

Love a wood stocked 870. I would usually select a wood stocked 870 from the equipment room, every substation had one. We had a mismatch of wood and plastic Speed Feed stocked 870’s. Had an 870 in my patrol car my entire career (supplemented with an AR15) even as a Lt watch commander.

So how many of the current ownership group production guns do you own in order to form that opinion?

Sorry but never have liked pistol grip shotguns. Seen folks beat themselves up with those many times.

I have a couple old 870 Wingmasters. One was my dad's that I got a couple years ago, but put it in my safe without much thought. It's been well used with a lot of blueing wore off, but zero rust. Barrel is 27 1/2" long. I checked it to see how many rounds it would hold...TWO!
Took the spring out, and found this spacer in it. It holds 4 rounds now.

True. Worthless for most any purpose. It would seem these are purchased based on vicious looks alone. Anyone find a real use for such shotguns?

There's no disputing that the Remington 870 is one of the finest and most dependable pump-action 12 ga. shotguns ever produced. Hopefully this new HD model will follow suit. I've had several 870s over the years, and still have a camo thumbhole stock version for turkey hunting. I recently traded in my 870 Police Magnum with a Surefire shotgun forend light (it was a used SWAT police trade-in that I bought years ago from my lgs) for a Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol. I decided that I wanted a semi-auto shotgun for home defense. I added a sling, a Holosun 1000 lumen weapon light, and Esstac shell cards. It's extremely light, fast, dependable, and accurate. But those new 870 HDs do look cool!

I owned an "Express"870 for about 10 minutes. Popped the pins to clean the fire control group, looked like the plastic innards of a cap gun. Might be very reliable though. Joe

One year my small department purchased Fairmonts instead of Crown Vics. Our 870s were in a pouch below the front seat. The full size guns would not fit in the Fairmonts. We purchased pistol grips for our 870s. I attended the state firearms instructor course during this time. During the shotgun portion IIRC I fired 60 rounds the first day. The second day I borrowed a full grip shotgun. For the rest of the lifetime of the Fairmonts(2 years) we put full size shotguns in the trunk.
I do not believe the pistol grip shotguns are of much use YMMV.

I bought an 870 Express when they first came out. I used it teaching a Combat Shotgun Course to the Navy at NS Long Beach. In the course of about 4 years, it had about 10,000 rounds of OO Buck and Slug put through it. Never had a problem. Had a friend that was a gunsmith at the LGS after I retired. The shop bought a bunch of 870's and parts from one of the local LE agencies. He had an old steel trigger assembly in the stash of parts. Ended up putting that in my shotgun. Have not fired it that much since I retired, but every time I do it works very well. This is a the shotgun I posted a picture of in Post #9.

I bought a new 12 ga. Express 870 with a short barrel and black synthetic stock about twenty-five years ago. It resided daily in a no-top CJ-5 Jeep for many years when I lived in the country. It was fired a good bit but not on a regular basis. It worked great on closeup varmints and copperheads. Beat up somewhat with a scratched stock and blue loss, it was often covered with dust and it got rained on occasionally.
I sold it at a gun show after moving to town. Good gun right out-of-the-box with absolutely no add-ons, "upgrades", or junk to lessen its practical effectiveness.
