Pair of Belgian Percussion Dueling or Target Pistols

Sharing a recent acquisition, a nice vintage pair of dueling or target pistols.

These are ~ .44 caliber; proofed 11.8mm. They were marketed by C. Mode of Paris. they remain "as new." I'm not sure whether I will fire them.

Has anyone been slapped with a glove recently?

Very nice! A great cased set, would love to have one like that in my collection........... Though I'm sure I would have to shoot them!

Very nice--congratulations! Looking at the grip end, it looks like a piece made by one of the famous Belgian (Liege) Warnants, possibly Jean Warnant. Here is a photo of a Flobert gallery pistol; note the similarity of the butt end. Does it have a "JW" or "J. Warnant" mark anywhere?

Thank goodness NO. More importantly I've done nothing to deserve that treatment. Now if I remember the edict of dulling the one being slapped gets to decide the weapons to be used. If that were the case, I'd go for wet towels at close range. I was a pro in the locker room with a wet shower towel:D.

P.s Neat set of pistols:D

What a beautiful set. Are the stocks and accessories made of ebony ?
I once read an article that told how to differentiate between guns like that that were true "dueling" pistols and those that were target pistols. But I forgot the details. Target sets are often called "dueling" pistols because it seems more glamorous I suppose. But it doesn't really matter what they are, they are spectacular.

. . .

Is the mallet ebony? Thanks for sharing this gorgeous set with us.

All of the wood is ebony: the stocks, the mallet, both accessory/patch containers, the cleaning rod, the handle on the nipple wrench, and the seating rod.

Thanks for all the kind comments!

There is no mark of that maker or of those initials. I have limited knowledge of Belgian makers' marks.

Here are photos of the various marks:

I suspect the "LF" mark may be a maker's mark, but I haven't researched it.

As for when these were made, I understand that the retailer, C. Mode of Paris, was in business early in the 20th century.
