Default Security Six tryout

I got a nice day to go shooting this morning. I got my first Security Six, one from 1972, their first year production. (Thanks Toyman.) The gun is perfect: far from a safe queen but it’s really a great, solid shooter. I checked the sights last night with a Bushnell laser thing that goes in the barrel and didn’t need to adjust anything today. I like the gun. Solid like my GP100. Smooth 3# single action trigger. Good for 50 YO.
I shot a box of 327 Federal Magnum and a mix of 44 mag and 44 special. I wish I lived in the country where I can shoot more.
Sorry for ugly pictures.

I have had several Security Sixes over the past 50 years, all barrel lengths and both blue and stainless. I don't recall ever having any problems with any of them. They were solid shooters. I currently only have one, a 4" blue made in the mid 1980's that belonged to a local deputy.

Just curious. What were you shooting the 327 and 44 out of?

The Security-Six is a much missed revolver. Ruger replaced it because it was showing some of the same issues S&W was with the K-frames with hot .357 ammunition…plus Ruger wanted to compete against the L-frame.

I always heard that the Speed/Service/Security Sixes were replaced because the GP100 was able to offer a higher profit margin per-gun for Ruger. The latter definitely has less aesthetic machining touches done to it.

Truth be told I've only ever see the Six-series guns get somewhat loose in the crane area after significant round counts - something that an additional lockup point (like the GP100 has) would probably solve. I vastly prefer the balance and looks of the Six-series guns over the GP100s that replaced them. Though for what it's worth, a fixed sight, half-underlug GP100 isn't a bad looking gun at all; it's just a shame that they don't produce a variant like that anymore.

I got my security six about a yr ago . Local shop closing , pd $350 for a 4" barrel / stainless steel . It's in LNIB condition with perfect factory grips . They took a bit getting used to --- smallish . Now , no problem . It's a quality piece . I much prefer the 6 series over the GP100 series . I am a S&W guy but now have 4 rugers in different calibers and all have been perfect from the factory . Oh , I also own 5 colt's , no complaints with them either . Did I say I'm a S&W guy ? Regards Paul

Like those production Herretts. I've got a set like that on my M18. Nice grips. Fit me a lot better than the factory magnas.

I love the Ruger 6 Series DA revolvers. I currently have three and always looking for more.
The way I heard it was that the old Six series was getting too expensive to build and where there wasn't much profit on them anymore. Thus the GP-100 was born. Much cheaper and easier to produce.
Honestly, I never have liked the GP-100. The thing just feels clunky in my hand. The Sixes feel just right.

I bought my .357 4'' SS in early 1972. Still have it.

I went crazy looking for a good S&W back in that time frame and adjustable sighted "quality" guns were in short supply so as soon as my NYS pistol permit arrived I was at the gun shop and the owner showed me that then new on the market revolver.

He gave me a good price, sorry do not remember how much but it was decent and I now had my first handgun. He knew me and I had bought a couple shot guns and plenty of reloading supplies as I was shooting skeet.

The Security-Six line made huge inroads into the law enforcement market...Bill Ruger said he wanted to do to Smith & Wesson in police sales what Smith & Wesson did to Colt...and he pretty much did it.

When the GP-100 replaced the Security-Six line the big move to self-loading pistols was underway and police sales weren't as much a priority. The GP-100 line...as strong as it is...is basically a field revolver, not a police sidearm...too big and bulky for that for most uses.

Boy, howdy, I've had this gun for years! Ruger made these great!

I hated the stocks (I still have the originals somewhere) and this gun shoots like a dream - that's how I remember it, in dreams, I have not shot it in many years. I don't think I ever loaded it with anything hotter than .38 Special and to this day, as it has done for many years, it sits hidden in a drawer in my master bathroom in case of an emergency.

You say you don't have a bathroom gun?

Ahhhhh.....see, you DO understand!

The 327 from the 6” GP100. I have a 629-6, 6” for my 44 needs. That 44 is spot on if I do my part, but I haven’t shot it more than 25 yards.

I'm confused. I thought the Security SIx only came in 357 Mag/38 SP.

Sorry Steve! I've been doing that a lot lately. I left out the part where I took two other guns, too! Sorry. I keep forgetting other people can't read my mind. That IS a confusing post...

As late wife#1 used to say, "I'm psychotic, not psychic".

Steve, here are the other two culprits in the Paper Killing Incident. Not a professional photographer!

I have heard that a 4" stainless Security Six makes a good bathroom gun. Just saying...

I inherited Father Ian Laws pre warning 6” Security Six. Also had a beautiful 4” stainless from a co-worker but he wanted to buy it back several years later and couldn’t refuse him. I do miss it but have plenty of S&Ws to shoot.

I wish it were stainless but it is wrapped nicely in a high-quality gun sock away from water.
