Default SnapSafe or other keyed portable safes - metal lock shaft?

All,

Does anyone have a SnapSafe model 75220, or one of that series (XXL size)? I am trying to find if that device uses a metal or plastic lock shaft. This would be the part that rotates when the key is turned that the internal locking latch is attached to (the finger that swipes in and out of the locking tab when the key is rotated).

I had a GunVault model that I found had a plastic lock shaft when it dropped and broke off. I need a replacement that won't break.

To that point - does anyone know of other makes/models that do have all metal lock components that uses a key, not a combination with a plastic latch release lever or knob, or an electronic/biometric-only lock?

I am not sure if I like the combination biometric/electronic and key back-up units, but the fact that they have a key option is a bonus if the electronic doohickey thing-a-majigger quits - which is why I don't want to go that route. I want a fully mechanical device with no electronics.

I am tempted to scrap the "portable safe" class of boxes entirely and just go to something like a Pelican case with padlocks. But they don't make one that I like that is thin and would slip under a car seat...

Thoughts?

I went to my local store to order some of the SnapSafe's. They can get them, but the guy I deal with the most gave me a referral to Rural King and their Getteysburg brand portable safes - about half the price as what they can get. So I went to Rural King and found no Getteysburg portable safes, but I found several Hornadys. They had the XL size cable portable safes on sale for even less so I got all they had.

These units are solid and have a strong, durable all steel lock.

The down side is these are a bit small for what I need.

So I'm back to the same question - do SnapSafes hold par on the quality? Or is there another option anyone would recommend?

Since you already own the boxex, try a locksmith's shop. They can probab swap out the lock cylinder and the kit will have several "hands" that are metal.

I'm not sure of the weather in your location, but the original engineering may have gone with plastic to avoid corrosion and condensation problems.

I put a Tuffy brand safe in console of truck. Sold by dealer under Ram accessories and had them install as it required some minor modifications to console. Solid all steel key lock. Excellent product.

I have a keyed portable safe for other car with cable. I don’t remember brand but it was cheap somewhere like $20. Maybe a Hornady ? I believe the lock bar is metal.

I looked around and liked the Hornady Key only boxes with a tubular key and with the double lock bar best. I found someone that still had the discontinued 2700KL box (Ballistic Products) and bought it as it will hold a full size 1911 with room to spare. Their newer model, the Alpha Elite, also has the double lock points but is smaller and crowds a 1911.

The 2700KL and Alpha Elite below.
