Default Hi Standard 101 .22 Mag Derringer To .22 LR

I’ve had a Hi Standard 101 derringer in .22 mag for years now. It’s about new and the barrel, (hinge area,) is still tight with no wobble. It’ll probably stay this way because, (other in low light conditions,) it’s not fun to shoot.

Recently there have been a few high condition 101 parts/repair kits in .22 LR showing up. I’m wondering if a LR barrel would just be a “plug and play” ?

Jim

I have owned both, to the best of my knowledge the barrel assemblies should interchange.

I have a 22 Mag version. I looked into doing a barrel swap to 22LR and found that it is possible to do. Make sure the 22LR barrel is the model 101 type and not the earlier model 100 type. Early 100 models barrels are slightly different, but does work. But a 101 22LR barrel assembly is the exact same as the Mag version.

I ended up buying a 22LR barrel, barrel latch, latch pin and latch spring and extractor to give it a try. After getting all the parts and putting them in the barrel, I then found a pristine 22LR version complete with box. So I bought it and then sold the 22LR barrel to a forum member.

Interchangeable - for the most part - the lock-up stirrup was a different dimension on one I worked on and had to be fitted.

I have a Heritage RR with 22LR and 22 Mag cylinders. At least once I've accidently fired LR ammo in the mag cylinder. Only effect I noticed was slightly bulged cases, but I don't reload 22 LR anyway so figured it didn't matter. I suspect your HS derringer would react the same way.

I watched an “expert” on YouTube doing a critique on the .22 Mag one. He said it was totally acceptable to shoot .22 LR in the .22 mag. “Sometimes the spent case needs to be driven out.” “Bring a rod.” 🙄

He also repeatedly dry fired it.

I’m sure it IS possible to shoot LR’s in the Mag but….
