Fun with switchblades
On another thread about knives I got to thinking, how many recent acquisitions do I actually have?
Mostly switchblades!
Clockwise and down:
Boker Automat Kalashnikov 74 *
Pro-Tech USA
A little fur-bearing animal on the blade. No name. Has a lock or safety, too, call it what you will, which is unusual.
Delta Force - out the front
Delta Force
*It bears no resemblance to an AK, actually, but the box is comes in resembles an AK magazine - it's even got the banana curve!
No name. Nice carbon fiber scales.
Except for the AK these are all relatively recent acquisitions. Or gifts!
I have quite a few more but I stuck to ones I haven't shown before.
So, let's see more!

After having only one and having it open up in my pocket a few times because the lock failed, I sold it after being fixed. No fun wondering why you have blood dripping down your leg!!
I never had any great attraction to switch blade knives. My personal view of a knife has always been as a cutting instrument or tool and not a weapon. Because of that, the rapid blade deployment meant nothing to me.
My daily EDC knife is either a Spyderco Delica K390 or an old Stag handled Marbles folding Stockman with 3 blades. The Spyderco opens up plenty fast for me and again, since my knives are cutting tools, I also carry the Marbles folder on many occasions.

When Michigan allowed them roughly 5 years ago it became VERY expensive[shame on me 😁]! I usually always carry one or atleast an assisted opener style.
The dumb part in Michigan's law is that an OTF is legal BUT it 'becomes' illegal IF it has a spear point blade - go figure!

Not allowable in my neck of the woods. One day I am going to shake the dust of this state off of my feet and head either east or west.

Don't carry the Boker too much, the finish on mine wore pretty quickly. This was jet black.
I've found automatics useful. There have been many times I've found myself needing a knife with only one hand available because I was holding something else in the other hand.

I've posted this one before...a 1919 Schrade "Safety Button" knife. My only switch blade. It was a gift from a dear friend who insisted that I use it because it is a "working man's knife." This knife sees a lot of use and is still going strong.

Okay, some fun here.....
WAY, WAY back in my days as a pharmacist in New York City I carried a switchblade stiletto like the one in this picture:
Count 4 in from the top.
There is a similar one in red and in bone on the bottom row (and there are 2 more in the picture of a different variety).
I never cut myself with it but I cannot tell you how many times it opened in my pocket. Drove me crazy so I put it away.
But, back when I was carrying it a young NYPD officer used to hang out with me in the pharmacy and he'd let me handle his revolver and I'd let him handle the ILLEGAL switchblade. Obviously, he didn't care and we got along great!
To carry the poster's comments further, however, I always carry two knives, a so-called tactical folder and a Swiss Army knife. But I admit I am more likely to use the tactical folder for cutting than the SAK because the tactical folders have locking blades and the SAK does not, but it has cut plenty of envelopes and boxes in its time, anyway.
As a real preference, I love this knife:
Kershaw Hinderer design
It is not a switchblade, but it opens almost as fast using a lever on the top-back that one finger can flip to open the blade.

Unfortunately my overlords in Olympia won't allow me to have an automatic opening knife. Only EMS and LEO can carry them.
But I have a couple of assisted-opening knives like ISCS Yoda describes above. Next best thing.

I admit I’ve been bitten by the auto bug with two Benchmade assisted and 4 autos.
I’m partial to OTF and carry one of the two Cobratecs regularly

I, too, am an auto fan. Absent of poor conditions (ie sand and mud on the pistol range), they made for a great work knife. My first purchase after graduating the Academy in 1997 was a Benchmade Auto Spike. I followed that up with a couple Masters of Defense autos, and finished my career carrying a Microtech Scarab QD, and a HALO III. No matter if you were a “gear guy” or not, EVERYONE thought the HALO was badass.

There might be place around Central and Morningside that sells "assisted opening" knives.
I may or may not have picked up an M724/MC-1 from there.

I have quite a few switchblades/autos. This Benchmade is my daily carry.
I'll get pictures tomorrow of some of the others. I have from $10 Chinese to $$$$ custom autos.

I have a few. I carry the Benchmade in the second picture, that was when it was new. It's well worn now.
The S&W one in the middle of the first picture is probably in Rusty's pocket right now.

I do love a good auto knife, and have far more than I should. This Kershaw got the nod for carry today.

Delivered to your door. Very little mechanical ability needed
Button Lock Folding Knife Kit | Knife Handles Options Included | KnifeKits.com
I have put together a few, done embellishments like make Damascus blades for them, use more exotic scales like mammoth ivory
I see that now you have to order the spring separately and use a carbide drill to put the necessary hole in the blades for the spring.
a buddy of mine has been wanting me to make him up one with a Damascus blade, so I ordered 3 kits and 5 springs, got lots of small carbide drills
I simply grind a piece of Damascus to the right thickness, use JB Weld to stick a factory blade to the Damascus, then drill the holes and grind the rear profile so it works in frame then do the blade profile how I want it, but in the bevels, then heat treat it.

$30 on eBay; great action and one of the sharpest knives I’ve ever owned.
