Default Swarovski Scope & Win Mod 70 value

I’ve got an opportunity to buy a Winchester mode 70 safari (Made in New Haven, CRF) I don’t think it’s ever been shot, maybe once or twice. Caliber is 416 Remington. It is topped with a nice Swarovski 1.25-4x24 Habicht scope. Also looks unused.

I can get the package for $1300. I think that’s a great deal, what do you think? I feel like I could sell the scope for several hundred bucks by itself and have a cheap large caliber, safari rifle.

This must’ve been one of the last Model 70s made in New Haven.

Thoughts?

I think that is a very good deal if you need a caliber that big or if it is just an enthusiast collector buy because in my own mind for me, the rifle is a good value no matter the caliber but, the caliber is only good to me as a novelty unless I was to hunt dangerous game in Africa or the truly large coastal brown bear up north…otherwise just a novelty that would probably fade for me without a use for it. Now, the scope is also a great sweetener to the deal as it can be used on other rifles of lesser caliber anlso, and/or sweeten the deal for you to flip the whole package. I think this is ultimately a good buy where you can get your $ back or have a great dangerous game rifle.

Is a good price. However the 416 is about obsolete.......With that bolt head size would difficult to rebarrel to another caliber......I'd Pass......

I'd buy that in a heartbeat and I already have a .458 Win Mag and a .460 Weatherby Mag.

If the scope has a 30mm main tube, it's worth $600-$800.

That's a standard belted mag bolt face!

If I was 20 or more years younger, I'd be all over that. (I'm down to 1 dangerous game rifle.) A friend of mine retied at 64 and went on his first African Safari for Cape Buffalo, Lion and Elend. Used a 700 in 416 Remington on all three. Used a factory rifle with soldiered on scope bases and added express sights. Soft points for the kitty and solids for the buff and goat.

That scope is 1" tube.

Excellent deal! Buy it and you’re all set for your Cape Buffalo hunt. The New Haven rifles are desirable. One just like it on GB went for $3025 earlier this year, no scope, if you use the search function. With the scope it’s probably $3300 easy if as described.

If it’s a super grade it would be worth significantly more but seems like a standard New Haven made Safari Express. I used one just like it in Africa. On the most popular African hunting forum which I’m a member, you could easily sell this rifle with scope for $3300-3400.

Ammunition is still made and it’s still a very viable African hunting round or for whatever else you want to hunt here in North America and want that kind of power. Winchester still offers their newer M70 Safari Express in 375 H&H, 416 Rem Mag and 458 Win Mag but my understanding is Winchester won’t be producing them for 2 more years nor are they as desirable as the older New Haven rifles. The Swarovski scope is very appropriate for this rifle, I would leave it on. You could check on eBay, I’m guessing offhand the scope is worth 500-600 maybe more.

All in all, this is a steal, I would be all over it.

I paid $1,250 a year or 2 ago for a mint Model 70 Super Grade chambered in .308 a year or 2 ago. It was made in Portugal, and I think it was a reasonably good deal.

I do not think you get full value for a scope when you sell it on a rifle. Meaning it’s generally a bargain for the buyer IF it’s the scope they want for that rifle.
