Colt LW Commander, 38 Super
This 1970 Light Weight Commander is ANIB with the paper work in the original box. It has been stored dormand for a very long time. I took the original plastic grip panels off and put on the pre-war diamond grips on. I'm not sure of the wood grips are the real deal but the sure look and feel great. My friend, who was with me when I bought it, thought I was crazy to swap them out but the originals will stay with the gun. He also wants to broker a deal to make crazy money on it but it is going into my modest 1911 collection. It is the nicest one of these I have seen. Enjoy

Very nice indeed. I picked up my 1968 LW Commander way back in 2002 at the Kansas City gun show. A gentleman had two of them, one in .45 and one in .38 Super- both were 90-95% but neither had orig boxes. $650 a piece. I should’ve bought both but couldn’t afford it so I grabbed the .45. While I still like it, I wish I’d picked the .38 Super

Nice super...
Not sure how long the Plastic grips have been
off the gun...but they tend to shrink.
I would put them back on.

Beautiful .38 Super and a Commander on top of that!
I have a pair of the early type of Colt grips, as previously mentioned, they shrink over time. I mounted my pair to a walnut board with screws the same size as the escutcheons. A few years later, I remounted them and they had not shrunk.

They already shrunk. One hole on each side is elongated. It took me a while to get them off because they were so tight. I wanted to see what it looked like underneath. Everything was perfect. They eventually came off with a lot of care. They had been on the gun for 54 years.
Anyone have an idea on the origin of the wood replacement panels? They have a J and a P stamped on the underside.
The box is pretty much perfect as well.

Nice acquisition! I’m a fan of the vintage Colt 38 Super. I recently picked up a 1968 Government 38 Super but sadly it was missing the original Coltwood grips like yours in the box. Probably had shrunken anyway but longtime previous owner was a fan of a certain wood backed brand of pearl grips which were also on a Luger I sold for them and a 1965 Colt New Frontier I acquired from them.

Very nice addition to your 1911 collection.
My 2006 XSE .38 Super commander I picked up a few years ago.

Very Nice. Had 3 LW Colt Commanders and they are the Perfect carry pistol. Health issues are no fun.
