Default Your choice on a hicap 9mm compact ( ** New Reply** )

If you were looking for a hicap compact 9mm, would you be looking at a Glock 19 a sig 229/365 or something else?

Thanks for all the replies. Got a lot of homework to do

I've seen a lot of good guns in that category come out in the last 5 years or so, but none have made me think about trading my Sig P365. If I was starting from scratch, I'd have a hard time not going with a P365X, but I'd take a hard look at the Hellcat.

Your worried about picking the right high cap mags when you should be finding the right handgun and then practicing mag changes !!

So awake up and figure out what your shoot the best . Don't be a spray and pray type shooter .

Oh there's a heck of a difference in size between a g19 and a p365 too .

It depends on whether you are looking for a "compact", "subcompact" or "microcompact". To me the Glock 19 falls into the first, a Sig 229 the second and the P365 the third category.

This might be a good rental range assessment opportunity; you may shoot one a lot better than another. I like the P365 and it is quite a bit smaller than a G19, or even a G26. Happy hunting!

I've been carrying the CZ P 07 for 3 years, so far 100%. The 6906 is still loaded, in the safe. Carried that one, also 100% for 27 years. Being a revolver guy at heart I'm partial to anything with an external hammer. A non-railed Sig 229 would be perfect and having a ton of "E1" mags keeps me looking for an affordable one. Joe

It's hard to beat a Glock 19, especially when there are always police trade-ins on them for low prices, or so it seems. (Heck, you could get a Glock 23 with a 9mm Conversion Barrel and still come out ahead.)

Since it’s already on your radar… if you don’t mind the weight, the Sig P229 is a phenomenal firearm. Of course I’ve got a soft spot for metal DA/SA guns. I’ll always have some variant of the P229 in my arsenal.

G19 or CZ75 PCR, depending on the manual of arms you’re most comfortable with.

Possibly the CSX to gain pocket-ability while only losing a few rounds.

Gen 3 Glock 19 for striker fans; H&K P30 for those of us who prefer hammer fired. I consider the P365 to be a micro so no comparison to a true compact. Each gun has its place.

CZ RAMI is often overlooked. Lighter and smaller than most seem to think. I don't know if 13 rounds counts as higher capacity these days but the Springfield Hellcat has become my routine carry. Fits my hand very well and a nice trigger once things get smoothed out.

I already have a Sig P365XL MS and am very pleased with it. It carries, handles, and shoots very well. It replaced my Kahr CM9, which I liked very much and still carry now and again. My Old Faithful in this category was a S&W 469 which did the duty quite well for years. I agree with the comments above about there really being three or so sub-categories of these small 9s, and my three guns pretty well illustrate that.

Some suggestions that should count as different.

Grand Power Q100. Rotating barrel reduces the recoil and it has a great trigger.

Arex Delta M, a Slovenian take on the Glock 19 with a better grip angle. Very affordable.

PSA Dagger. American made Glock 19 clone with a better grip. Also very affordable.

Have a Glock 43x with after market 15 round mags.
Also have an Sig 365 X Macro and an Sig 365 X.
Prefer the SIGs, like the Trigger!

Have several of the ones mentioned in one version or another. I find the glock 19 easiest to shoot, but hardest to conceal. The glock 43 and shield next in line and the 365 the most difficult to shoot, but easiest to conceal. But that is my personal take. I have a soft spot for the 43 and do carry it most of the time. I do swap it out with a beretta tomcat when I want something a bit smaller for easier concealment. I carry iwb or owb depending on how I dress.

Another here in the 365 X camp. In my case the XL. Carries easy with 12 round mag and a 17-round spare mag. It has become my everyday setup.

I just bought a Glock 45...which mates the 17's frame with the 19's slide. I think it's just about perfect.

I bought a Sig P365 in the spring of 2018 and in my opinion I’ve not found anything that I like better or even like as well as my P365. As several people have said above, there has been a slew of high capacity 9mm pistols in the last several years. I decided to try the Springfield Hellcat Pro and installed the Apex Trigger as soon as it was available and even the Wasp Red Dot. I don’t like the Hellcat Pro near as well as my Sig P365. I keep carrying my Sig P365.

Unless the micro 9mm's have a 4" barrel (+/-) and 15 rounds in the standard magazine, I don't consider them to be Compacts.

For true Compacts, my choices are:
  1. Beretta APX
  2. HK P30
  3. CZ 75 Compact/P01/PCR
  4. Beretta PX4

You want a double stack compact 9mm the obvious choice is the Glock 19. Their best selling model I believe. I have one but to me it is closer to being a full size gun in my smallish hands. The best compact hi cap 9mm available is the Glock 26. Ten + 1 or use model 19 mags. Has the same tested rugged durability as the larger models. The 26 was Gen 3 from the beginning. No problems like the trouble prone Sigs.

I admit I'm mired in the 20th century..................

That said ..... If I "feel/think" that I may/will find the need for more than the 8+1 in my 3913 plus one or two spare mags then I want a small duty size handgun [or long gun]

S&W 6906/PC Shorty-9 12+1...... spare mag is 15 w/+2 adaptor
Beretta 92 Compact 15+1 spare mags are 18 w/ Farrar grip adaptors
Beretta 92 Centurion 18+1 spare mags are 18/20

I've carried all successfully concealed since the late 1980s in Milt Sparks Summer Special or Executive Companion IWB holsters.

Just a bit harsh ? Well when your looking at a glock 19 , a p229 and a p365 you are looking at a W I D E variation of weights and size but at least the P365 come in several sizes and capacity's now .

Your question also seems like something a first timer or at least a novice to CC handguns would ask .

Some indoor ranges that have rentals may lket you shoot several handguns for one fee if slow . You will have to buy there ammo most times but at least you may get to try the handguns your interested in .

I did not mention a handgun as that is a personal choice and most any 15 shot 4" barrel pistol or less will make a good CC handguns , The p365 base model is a 10 round version with a 3.1 barrel while the 17 round versions is the P365X Macro with a 3.7" barrel and full grip all while it's lighter , thinner and shorter than a G19 but it is taller by only .16 of an inch . Now make an effort to refine your choices hopefully after some range time .

You can also check out handguns for size comparisons as specs are not always right at Handgun Hero .

Glock 26 because that's what I got and I'm not buying another gun and I'd rather carry a G42 anyway.

IMHO a Sig P365 carried with a 10+1 capacity with a back up mag of 15rnds is ideal. The 10 round mag affords great concealability and light weight while carrying a 15 round back up mag isn't much more trouble as long as it is in a mag pouch. For those days where pocket carry is used a 10 or 12 round back up mag. in the pocket isn't a big deal.

You can get a cheap soft eyeglass holder (from Costco) and it can be shortened to length as needed. This makes pocket carry more comfortable.

I'll second the mention of the CZ 2075 RAMI. 14 plus 1 or 10 plus 1 capacity (depending on your state). It is a solid little brick. The weight feels better in my hand absorbing recoil then it does at my belt pulling my pants down. I deal with it. It's the only semi auto 9mm in my EDC rotation.

While I do not consider a Glock 19 to be a compact, I have handled and shot 3 popular ones in a single outing. The Hellcat, 365 and Kahr. The Kahr was slightly more concealable but not enough to give up the xtra rounds. The Hellcats Xtra capacity is its claim to fame. I also liked the sights on it although they are not everyone’s cup of tea. I ultimately bought a 365. Perfect combo of size and capacity.

We all like to help spend someone else’s money. (I’m guilty, too.) My own choice is the P365 with thumb safety. As was said earlier, if I wasn’t already committed, I’d probably buy one of the models with the slightly longer grip - not for additional capacity but rather because it fits my hand much better.

I like the XL model in general, but I dislike its flat-face trigger. It appears SIG thinks that is a minority view since these days it looks like most of the P365 models come with that trigger.

(Edit) Re the compact/subcompact/micro-compact labeling thing, that is just a marketing theme. I don’t see a lot of difference in convenience of carrying a pistol when it gets much bigger and heavier than a 3913. G19/P228s are pretty much full-size guns, as far as I’m concerned. Big and heavy - when fully loaded. My preference is small and light, with a reasonable ammo capacity. I would still be happy with an Airweight Chief, but the 365 (1) carries more easily and (2) is more accurate in my hands. Those things offset the additional weight of the 365 v. the Chief. The next step down is one of the tiny .380s.

Well, I have a G19, but... Does it just HAVE to be in 9mm?

If you are talking about my favorite hi-cap Compact my M&P 40C with the 357 SIG conversion barrel would be my choice...

Cheers!

P.S. Now that I ponder it further, since I also have the 40/9mm conversion barrel (and the appropriate mags as well) I may only be cheating a little bit: M&P 40s are one of the best platforms out there for the easy ability to get the "best of both (actually THREE!) worlds"...

My P365XL ended my internal carry gun debates. Carries great, shoots great, solid trigger, great capacity, can mount a light and an optic. Done and dusted for me.

I have said 9mm because I do not reload anymore, and 9mm is about the most economical to shoot as well as extended capacity in the magazine. When all is said here, I may just use my G36 in 45acp. Not a lot of round capacity, but small and powerful

Well, I am not a first timer. What I am doing here is gathering information. I am using the knowledge of the forum as intended. I am looking for good experiences and bad ones too. If three guys come out and say stay away from the S&W ABC model and explain their issues, that may cause me to be careful about going in that direction.

It also opens the door to considering examples I may not have considered.

Quite a few (a dozen or more) compact options. The G19 is an obvious one, would also check out the M & P 2.0 3.6” and one kind of out of left field, the Girsan P35 PI Ops, steel or alloy frame.

But, if you can find one and don't mind the fact that it's used, the S&W 6906 still qualifies for the OP's high cap 9mm.

You can find the info you want doing searches instead of asking for opinions but you may want visit most firearm forums as they all have likes and dislikes . All gun companies let some turds get out the door . One older designs just be sure you can cover the parts for it you may need . I had one handgun the had to go home for some tlc brand new but its been good now for the last 15 years . Had handgun I do not like but they run fine for many others and thats part of the reason I said to see if you can rent some of the models your interested in or swap handguns at the range to try .

Now since your here I had a s&w gen 2 model 669 , good handgun with a great SA trigger but never took to it so it stayed in my safe for 28 years till I sold it . Lots of people dislike m&p early trigger design , but a couple minor tuning tricks and some raounds down range they tend to be rather nice triggers . I have a 2.0 compact 4" in 9mm optic ready but carry full size m&p's in40's or a 1911 lw commander in 45 . Now find what you like best . Maybe a CZ 75 compact or canik !

We have a G36 but I bought a stainless Ruger Officer 45
for carry when necessary.

While only 8+1 in 9mm, the Sig P239 is a bit shorter than
the G36, and is DA/SA.
If I need a 9mm smaller than the M59, it's the Sig.
Often called a very accurate, compact, combat carry,
ugly looking pistol.

With autoloaders, firing as fast as possible, at 10yds,
into a B27, and getting all in the black, is a good goal.
I guess the first 5 or 10 are important.
