Around the Horn of Africa (where there are actual boarders occasionally), the boarders use AKs and RPGs, very rarely anything heavier. Merchantmen can't have arms, so repelling boarders means a good radio and NEVER straying from patrolled shipping lanes. The varied grey-hulled ships, boats, and aircraft that respond to radio calls do a fine job.
If I bought an AR tomorrow, it would be a Colt in 7.62x39 (CR 6762).

While a Pump-Action 12 Gauge wouldn't be my first choice for "Repelling Boarders" in the contemporary sense, it's definitely a solid choice and I respect the folks who choose it.
On a side note, I definitely think that 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotguns do have a niche for a particular kind of invasion...
But seriously, I respect those who are choosing Shotguns over ARs, and while the AR is my first choice, a 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shattergun like my Mossberg 590 Shockwave would be my second choice. Also, think Shotguns pair well with ARs, so if I could choose which weapon I'd want in the hands of the person beside me, it would be a Shotgun.

My comments would get me in trouble. I believe the caliber and volume of fire will be sufficient to protect the homestead in times of civil unrest. If there is military intervention, I hope the military remembers the guns and ammo clearance sales at Wal-Mart.
Twelve thousand prairie dogs were just the warm-up.

Well I have a couple of AR's, one in each of 5.56 and 300 BO. Ruger 9mm pcc might get some work. Still trying to trade with my brother for Dad's old Enfield for no other reason than to shoot the mad minute with it.

The one I had, a box sock DPMS with a Vortex 2-7 scope. That and a 1,000 rounds of ammo and a dozen magazines were set back after testing for that some day possible need. The rifle would hold 1" at 100 yards with either factory or my had loads. Unfortunately, Illinois passed very restrictive gun laws (still being argued in court), but I "disposed" of it. (I have a friend in another state where it is legal).

Nothing against using ARs for the purpose, but I prefer shotguns. All of mine are old fashioned and simple. Nothing hanging here or there - not even a sling - and no batteries. I would like to have a more modern shotgun designed with home defense in mind, but the prices of the models that interest me are hard to justify when one already has “a few things” that suffice. A $2000 home defense shotgun is not in my budget, even if it would come with a coffee grinder.

The MagPul MBUS sights co-witness with the Vortex Spitefire 1x optic very well. But I do just leave them locked down most of the time.

The Navy has addressed the problem with boarders using this rig. Wait until they get close enough where using the scope backwards is not an issue.
US Navy mocked for image of captain firing gun with back-to-front scope

My Navy vet SIL likes to mock me for firing Sharpshooter on Army Basic pop ups. He fired Expert in the Navy, using an M-14. Says it took almost all day.
My reply is we had rain the night before firing for record, nobody got Expert.

That’s not how it’s going to happen. The “boarders” some day will come across the southern border. Wait…… that would never happen.

Seems there are more soldiers than sailors here worrying about repelling boarders.
Nevertheless, as an airman I’d reach for my Rem Tac 13 or Colt.

Not sure how difficult the Army courses are. But the Navy's aren't that difficult. I fired a Navy Ribbon Qualification Course for handgun using a 2" Model 36 when I was teaching at NS Long Beach. I fired a 400 out 400 and rate a Navy Distinguished Expert Ribbon. I suppose I could have worn it on my ribbon bar, but felt it would look out of place with my USMC Pistol Expert Pistol Badge.

I wouldn't sweat it. As long as you're buying one of the newer offerings there's not much "junk" out there being pedaled these days. Unless you're planning on shooting competition or sniping prairie dogs out past 300 yards most of them will perform satisfactorily. Not many average owners ever gonna wear out even a 'cheap' one shooting it.
Buy a configuration that will allow you to use the kind of sights you want and the stocks you prefer, and put the money in practice ammo, optics and an upgraded trigger. Unless you reload and are into using heavier bullet weights for extended ranges and are willing to experiment for the optimum results - everything I stated above applies - in my opinion.

In 1973, the Marine midshipmen from Auburn's Navy/Marine ROTC unit were scheduled to go to Fort McClellan to be the aggressors against the Marine reserve unit from Birmingham AL. When we arrived at Fort Mac, after coming up in the rain, a Marine captain from the reserve unit told our Marine advisor, Major Philson, that the Army wouldn't allow the Marines to shoot their 105s in the rain. The Major, an artilleryman, had a meltdown, saying that the blanky-blank rain didn't stop anyone in Viet Nam from fighting. I believe he served two tours over there.

The Marines just tend to shake their heads at some of the rules the other services have........
