Today’s Bass Pro Deal: Colt GCNM
During my weekly visit to the Vegas Bass Pro, I spotted this cherry, 1981 Colt Series 70 Gold Cup National Match. $996 OTD
The gun is like new; probably fired but very little. Came with the owner’s manual, OEM Colt mag and 7 Wilson Combat 47D mags.

They shoot very well. I have a 1977 GCNM and it shoots very well! Enjoy it.
Shot this target a couple of weeks ago. 50 out of 50 with 4X, not to bad for an old guy!

My favorite Colt 1911 out of the box. That era Gold Cup has the best sights Colt has ever put on a pistol.

With few exceptions, the only Colt 1911 that interests me is the Series 70 GCNM, that are pre 1983. Interestingly, they recently had a similarly conditioned 1983 Series 80 GCNM with the new 3 hole aluminum trigger, firing pin safety for $1800. I know the chap that prices the used guns. I don’t say anything, I just smile, fill out the 4473 and say thank you.

I have no interest in a GCNM after mid 83.

There's a previous post on the pin for the front site - I think they meant the roll pin on the rear site. That's where mine would work loose?

Front sight and plunger tube are staked on.
Rear sight's pin does come loose on occasion.
Will tell the funny story about the GC's damage later.
"1911 STAKING TOOL
MODIFICATION FOR COLT GOLD CUP SERIES 70 MKIV REPAIR
Ordered the Strobel plunger staking tool and reshaped the business end to fit inside the slide and also double as a front sight staking tool.
Made aluminum backing plates as necessary.
Can be accomplished with hand tools.
The front sight is shorter and on tight.
Plunger tube on tight."

Yea, I had one in 1968 for NRA bullseye shooting. Was great but didn't have any use for it when I moved.

I've read that Gold Cups came with two sets of springs.
One for Ball and one for target loads.
My older sister informed me, after some recent research,
that our Mom's Mom was from a family named Elliason.
Based on my screen name and shooting skills, I must have been adopted.

I do have a Series 80 GC. By that time, they were just Government Models with wide triggers and adjustable sights, at least IMO. But, the previous owner had a full blown conventional bullseye "accuracy job" by a long gone guy named Jack Best. Kart barrel, full tightening, etc. I have the Ransom rest test target. Amazing. I'm nowhere near that good, but nice to know what it's capable of.
I used to shoot with some hard-core Bullseye shooters (like annual trek to Perry, etc.) Even though I had no idea who Jack Best was, they did. They told me if I didn't buy the gun please tell them who was selling it. I bought it, never regretted it. Still have it!

Bought a similar one last week in about the same condition, but mine was in .38Special and was the “mid-range” model. Wish that I could have purchased it at that price, but I had to pay considerably more. All of them are enjoyable to shoot.

I have a GCNM Series 70 made in '77 that I bought with a Colt Conversion Unit in .22LR. It has been at least 10 years ago and paid $1K for them. I bought a Colt Mid Range a few years ago and had a custom M1911 in .38 Special. Then I bought a S&W 52 and sold the Mid Range (to a Forum member) as it was one of three in that caliber. Enjoy your pistols gentleman.

IIRC, during '81 Colt changed from the 70Nxxxxx
to xxxxxN70. Ours is an earlier '81 and the CH4's
is later that year.
When I pick up a revolver, my thumb swipes the
non-existent thumb safety.

That is a sweet find
I have multiple Gold Cup National Match pistols but at that price item bought another one
Though I will admit that my favorite Gold Cup is my Gold Cup Commander

That was a really good price for that gun by itself. The magazines are icing on a very nice cake.
I love my Series 70, and think it has a better trigger than the later Series 80 with the firing pin block.

CH4, You did incredibly well!! Not only is that a fantastic price for the GCNM Series 70, but it looks like it is either new or in like new condition!! The place that I shoot at has one for sale (used in display case) in very similar condition and they are currently asking $2,500.00 for it - no kidding!! I did not check the serial
# for the date but I do believe it's from the 1970's as well.
I have one from the mid 70's that I shoot often and it is my go to target pistol for competition, fun and has never ever let me down. I have not kept records of how many rounds I have put through mine over 50 years but I'd venture to say at least 25,000 to 30,000. Still shoots one hole groups at 50 feet as long as I do my part. It is pictured below after 100 rounds but when cleaned up it still looks like it's almost new!
I am a 1911 aficionado and only buy Colt's - my fav's! I have them in a few calibers and configurations but this one will (at least for me) shoot just as good as any Ed Brown, Les Behr, Wilson Combat, or any other high priced, fancy Dan gun. And...... it will eat any ammo all day long, including reloads. I think the Colt GCNM Series 70 is one of the finest 1911 Target Pistols made - regardless of price!

$2500 is a little optimistic, especially sans box. I normally see em for $1800 to $2k. Ironically, a few months ago, the same BP had a 1983 series 80 in the same condition, but it had an aftermarket 3 hole trigger. Not sure how many spare mags, but they wanted $1899.

For those of you still looking, there are 344 Colt Gold Cup National Matches for sale on Gun Broker. Sort through them and make a choice. Since I have an original Series 70 Gold Cup National Match I will not be bidding against you. Saw several that were tempting. Original Series 70 GCNM's and earlier would only be what I was looking at. Good luck!

But there’s only a handful of unmolested Series 70 GCNM.

Sorting through the 344 would be up to whoever is looking for one. I have one and do not need another. Maybe some good buys,......who knows?
