OK, the hunt is on for my 75th Bday present to myself that is just around the corner. I never thought I would say this, but I have about all the revolvers I want.

I have it in my mind that I want a 1911. I have 2 Colt 45 full size Govt now, and a Sig 1911 match elite 9mm

So without getting crazy and doing the Ed Brown thing or a Wilson Combat I am looking at various models and Dan Wesson is one.

So my question is: Is the Dan Wesson that much better than the Colt for the added money?

Thoughts and comments?

Thanks

I have several Dan Wesson autos including the DWX, they are all exceptional and a good value. The only auto I like better is my Bul Armory ultra lite.

I have a fair number of both including the newer Colts. My DW are the Heritage, PM7 and CBOB. Had them for a long time - paid about $800.00 for the CBOB and PM7. Been a while I guess.

My latest Colt is the newer issue Gold Cop National Match.

Fit and finish of the DW is better than the Colt. Cleaner trigger by far. No plastic anywhere. DW uses the Series 70 type trigger which I think breaks a little cleaner right out of the box.

The Gold Cup is definitely a nice gun, nothing wrong with it at all. Colt gives you different recoil springs for hardball or wadcutter, a nice touch. Good grips too. Excellent sights, same as the DW PM gun.

Barrel to slide and frame fit is tighter in the DW than the Colts. My CBOB and PM7 have a few miles on them and stay tight. The Colt fitting is a bit more casual.

I can't speak to the other Colts. I have their 1918 reissue -

A little different, but well done.

Dan Wesson 1911’s

I have three Dan Wesson’s, CBOB, PM7, both 45ACP, and a 10mm Razorback. I would buy another Dan Wesson that I don’t need if the price was right. I hope that this is ok to state, I don’t want another point!!!

Revolvers vs Need? What had need got to do with it?

45's vs Need? what has need or cartridge length got to do with it?
Handguns in 45 ACP and 45 Colt. Long guns in 45 ACP, 45 Colt, 45-70, 45-90, & 458-Win Mag.

1911 vs Revolver? What has Love got to do with it? I have Eight 45 Revolvers, 3 Sig 220's and a load of oddballs! But I love my Nine members of the 1911 family! The only non 45 is a 38 Super Commander!

I have a relatively new to me DW Kodiak 6” 10mm. Build quality is quite nice. On par with an early Nighthawk. The trigger was not as nice @ 4.5 lbs, but it did break clean. It did not take much work to get it down to 3.5. It puts 200gr Federal HSTs into a cloverleaf at 25 yards.

All solid parts, no MIM, quality finish. What’s not to like?

The only Colt I have is great, but it’s not a fair comparison, as it is a full Novak build.

I did not use the word need. I said I have about all the revolvers I want. There is a difference. :D:D

I have one Colt 1911 made in the late 1990s. It works, but there’s no feeling of craftsmanship IMHO. If I were going to buy a 1911 in the $1,800-2,500 price range, Dan Wesson would be the first place I would look.

I was sorely tempted to post photos of a few revolvers that you truly want … you just don’t know it yet!

All my 1911’s are Colt, mfg before 80 but have heard lots of “ complaints” about newer ones. Have 1 DW that is around 2017 mfg and its fine.
Ever thought about a LW Commander? Might be kind of hard to find an early one but love all mine, great to carry.

DW allll the way

I have various Dan Wessons, the majority are 9mm. they do 9mm the best. I had a few Les Baers and Colts and much prefer the DWs. My main steel challenge and USPSA gun has ~50,000 rounds through it, shot it for the last 8 years 2x months in matches that run ~250 rounds each. The trigger is world class, the gun has the 3rd recoil spring and just now needed an extractor for the 1st time. Never anything else wrong with it, still shoots spot on and the rails are tight with zero play as on day one, the wear is totally even, the gun is smooth as glass. It is a specialist 5''. I have no interest in any other 1911s. I also have a brand new black duty coat 9mm specialist as a back up and a compensated Wraith, all 9mm. Amazing, cant go wrong. I just sighted the wraith in with a red dot and w/o compensator and it shot at 20 yards all holes touching.

Thanks all for the comments. Please keep them coming.

Feel free to mention other manufacturers like Ruger for instance.

I have been looking at the DW, and They are limited in what they have. I want traditional 1911. No, bobbed frame, ambidextrous safety or rail. Sig looks like they redesigned all of their 1911's and not for the better in terms of being traditional.

Even colt is limited. They don't have a liteweight Commander.

So far, it would be a DW Pointman, but that doesn't come in black or a gold cup Colt, but the DW has better features.

Maybe what I want is not in the cards?

I hope you can experience the Les Baer sometime.
Especially at 25 yards. You will say that you never knew you could shoot like that.
I cannot imagine what a side by side would be like, say a Pointman 7 in one hand and a Les Baer Premier 2 in the other. I can dream can't I?

Happy early Birthday and what a happy dilemma! I don't see how you could go wrong with any of the DW products. I took a peak and kind of like the Valor model.

I received this Ed Brown Executive Elite as a gift and it has over 5,000 flawless rounds through it so far.

Perhaps the Ruger SR1911 Lightweight?

It does have the different hammer and beavertail, easily swapped out if desired. And, it has a titanium feed ramp, you will never have a concern about the anodizing or smoothness.
