Enfield "Jungle Carbine"
Was out at Shooter's yesterday and I have been looking at a pretty nice No5 MKI jungle carbine I went out thi s morning and put it on layaway. Bore was bright all the markings were clear. Made 6/44.
I have had a few of these before but they have always fascinated me, I remember when I was kid I lived in the county and would walk to the grocery store about 2 miles away and buy the Ballentine military books as well as their magazines and the jungle carbine was pretty prominantly pictured in one of them.
I will pick it up this weekend, all military no sporterization done to it, I already have the Australian Slouch hat, I will find a bayonet for it.

You can get the Indian version of the bayonet here:
http://www.atlantacutlery.com/p-1134...e-bayonet.aspx
They are like new, never had an edge put on them.

I can remember as a kid, you could buy those jungle carbines for 29.99 plus shipping in magazines like Popular Mechanics and Field and Stream and Argosy..
I never could talk my Dad into letting me buy one.
I got a new 30-30 when I was 13 for $65.00 so I quit complaining.

Needs no sporterizing, with its already short (20.5") barrel and abreviated forearm. Its detachable magazine and flash hider give it a remarkably modern appearance.
When you get it, you may want to carefully tighten all the screws, especially on the stock. I have heard that this sometimes cures the "wandering zero" problem that plagues these rifles.

I have had one for about 20 years now and they can be alot of fun,, But the light weight of them usually leads to some pain, As far as the reported wandering zero, I am not sure if it is truth or myth,,, I can imaging a guy shooting several K rounds through one each day and wanting his No4Mk1 back real bad.
I will try and dig up a pic of my old one!
Great woods guns that can reach out real far as well!

Great guns, very few true jungle carbines were really made. Is yours a Santa Fe ?

Should be Fazakerley-made, with an "A" s/n prefix, IIRC.

I have one of the Indian .308 versions that was satin nickel plated by Navy Arms. The larger buttplate helps with the recoil. A college buddy had a .303 jungle carbine and the reduced rubber recoil pad hurt!

Here are my two Keeper Enfields.
The upper is an unissued No4Mk1
The lower was a Canadian army No5Mk1 Jungle carbine, The unusual thing is the No5 has had the Bayo lug removed for whatever reason, But both are numbers matching Enfields that reside along my Garand and M1 Carbine.
Great old Battle rifles!

Congrats Stan on finding a nice one.
You might want to pick up one of these. My son and I shoot 32 S&W short and 32 acp in ours and it's very accurate within 100 meters.

shooting your jungle carbine
I have found that shooting my Jungle Carbines is a lot more fun if I use a good quality slip on recoil pad. Most stocks on milsurp guns are rather short so the pad is an aid not only in recoil reduction but fit of the rifle. The carbines do vary a lot from gun to gun in accuracy but a bad one can often be improved as mentioned bu snugging the screws, do not neglect the stock thorough bolt. I am a long time Lee-Enfield fan and shoot them frequently.

If someone were to want to pick up a very good condition "shooter" example, where would one begin their search?

I have seldom seen them in gun stores, so gun shows would be where I would start. Last I saw, somewhat ratty ones were going for $300. A nice one may be a lot more.
You could try places like Souther Ohio Gun ( https://www.southernohiogun.com/index.php/ ) as they get quite a variety of milsurp in from time to time. Otherwise, maybe put a WTB ad in the Classifieds or search on-line.
I saw a decent one at a gun shop recently, but just could not swing the money at the time. A day or so later I stopped back to paw it again only to find it gone. If you see one you like, act quickly.

I have one marked 10/44, a lucky find.
The jury still seems to be out on the "wandering zero". The noted Lee Enfield authority Ian Skennerton says it is due to lightening cuts in the received that caused the barrel to torque in prolonged firing, other shooters have reported no such problems. Haven't fired mine yet, just reporting what I have read.

I have a Sante Fe clone. Shoots great but I do want to find an original some day. They definitely are not fun to shoot a bunch of rounds through, though.

There not that difficult to find up here, North of the border. I have two No.5's and a No.4Mk1*. One of the 5's is a post war (1946) production in unfired condition, the '44 is a nice clean shooter, and the No.4 is a Savage built lend lease model. Up here No.1's and No.4's of all variations seem to come out in groups. You don't see any for a while, then all of a sudden every gun shop around has a dozen of more for sale. Same thing happened recently with P38 Walther's. In the last month there were at least 2 very reputable Canadian online sellers with at least 20 between them. They're great old guns, that's why so many got sporterized and got a new lease on life as hunting rifles.

Thanks to all you folks for those links and info!
I've long thought that this old war horse has been an overlooked nugget of Gold. Durable, hard hitting, holds 10 rounds (show that to me in another bolt gun!), removable box magazine, can use strippers, several Marks have a magazine cut off. A really well thought out "Scout rifle" that was 50 years ahead of it's time. OK, so I'm a "fan"!

A lot of people are put off by the recoil of a No. 5 Rifle, especially with service loads. To make things a little easier on the shoulder the following can be done.Remove the butt plate /recoil pad assembly. When you remove this,if the gun has not already been altered ,there will be a thin steel plate just forward of the black rubber pad.Remove that plate and it will actually let the recoil pad work.Make sure the recoil pad is not too soft or "rotten" before you do this.

I use a shoulder pad for my No5 and/or a slip on butt pad, The recoil of the No5 is pretty stout in my opinion.

Thank you for the info, I appreciate it. The pad is in really good shape. I will try a slip on when I fire it. The other markings on the barrel include a crown and 18.5 tons but i think that was addressed in another Enfield thread.

The wandering zero was caused by the lighting cuts in the receiver. These cuts were part of the modifications used to reduce the rifles weight. Never less it never hurts to tighten all the screws.

What brand/model of recoil pad do you use for the Jungle Carbine. I've searched and searched and the stock of the No.5 is smaller than the dimensions of any of the recoil pads that I have looked at.

Welcome to the Forum.
Numrich lists one that has vents to make it softer:

Considering this thread is 5-1/2 years old, you might not get a response from those folks in the original discussion. Try a Limbsaver slip on . The large size fits several of my long guns from a Mossberg 590 A1 to a Swiss K-31 to a Bulgarian AK.

I've owned several JC's over the years. This one was, by far, the nicest one I've ever found. Minty condition with no import or export marks.
I never fired this one, but I have shot them in the past. I found the best way to shoot them was to install a NoIV buttstock for shooting. They tend to be a tad longer and do a much better job of distributing the recoil to your shoulder. Try it, you'll like it!

I have an unissued No5 but never fired it. Love to find a nice bayonet for it but they go for some serious money.
