To all the hunters and rifle shooters out there, I do not pretend to be any good at this at all.

A few months ago, I decided I wanted a big (to me) rifle and wanted to shoot the thirty-aught-six round. This choice in round was 2 fold, 1) I consider this a pretty big round (I know there's lot's bigger, but it's big to me), and 2) in my childhood, there were 3 rifle calibers I knew of, .22, .30-30, and .30-06. I always thought, as a young boy, that the .30-06 was king.

So, I did my research and ended up with a Remington 700 CDL with a Leupold VX-1 3-9 variable scope.

My goal is to hit a 1 gallon water jug @ 200 yards.

A month ago, I went to a friends farm to shoot it for the first time. Conditions were not optimal (saw horse for bench rest for instance) but I had a nice 3 shot grouping @ 25 yards after 5 shots. Quit to take it home and clean it and adjust the scope.

Went to the rifle range today and sighted in again @ 25 meters. Cleaned it after 6 rounds and moved to 75 meters. Hit paper fairly good (3 hots) and moved target to 100 meters. Three more shots and this is the grouping I ended up with:

Here's a pic of the rifle:

Not great shootin but I was tickled pink.

Lessons learned:

1. 12 rounds at a time is enough for me.
2. The rifle is better then I am by far.
3. I need lots of practice.
4. This outing was FUN! Well, that's a re-enforced lesson learned. Shooting firearms is almost always fun!:D

I've got a Remington 700 BDL in 6mm Rem. It is an absolutely great rifle. I like all of the "majors": Win 70, Ruger 77, Savage ??? and the Rem 700. They are all excellent rifles, all a bit different, but will all get the job done. The Rem 700 seems to be the "classiest" one of the group...if you know what I mean.

With some load developement and practice you should be able to cut those groups by half.
Which range do you use?

I guess by "load development" you are talking reloads? Hmm, don't do that...

I fully expect that if the shooter can do his part, the rifle is more than capable in reducing that grouping.

I did get advice on factory ammo... some rifles prefer brand X and some prefer brand Y and some prefer brand Z. I have three of the major brands and will see if my particular rifle likes one better than the other.

Gutpile, I had Rem, Win, Sav, Browning on my list as all being better than I was. Looked at and held all and it was an easy choice for me. I'm a believer in that while holding the firearm, it speaks to me. However, I did like the 60 degree bolt action on the Browning a lot...

Oh, Ronj, I was at Lake City. They're in the process of building a new Lake City range, hope it has a pistol range and a 200 yard rifle range!

Great Rifle

I bought a Rem 700 Stainless Synthetic 270 about 15 yrs ago.Lightened the trigger to 2 3/4 lbs and used only Hornady BTSP and it has given 3/4 inch groups at 100 yrds without fail, and I only shoot during deer season-shooting to check my scope only 2 or 3 times a season.

Next time take a .22 with you and shoot it for a while after a 3 shot group with the 30-06.
The 06 can kick pretty hard at the bench and it takes a while to get used to, and you need to let the barrel cool off between groups at least a few minutes. Before long you will get used to the gun, trigger, and recoil and you will be hitting that 200 yard target.

I think a proper rest and bench and you will be shooting close to 1" MOA ASAP. Any bench rest shooters here can tell you of the importance of a proper rest and bench, as a very infrequent high power rifle shooter I know that 30 years ago, firing a Winchester M-70
in 308 from a VERY solid rest I fired a 1.5" group at 100 yards with IRON sights.

Also if you have not tried it already. Pick up a box of cheap Rem cor locks. Some unmodified rem rifles will shoot this about as good as any thing. If it shoots lighter bullets well enough they tend to not kick as bad. The more you shoot the better you and the rifle will shoot. Congrates and good luck.

Yepper, need to get me a 22 rifle. It's on the list. I did let the barrel cool between groups, it's amazing how warm it gets!

"All rifle rounds are compared to the .06 and thats a proven standard".

I like that one.:D

I think a proper rest and bench...

Today I had a bench and used the range's rest. Going to look into a proper rest.

That's what I was shooting today, Rem Core-Lokt 165 gr. The first time out, I used Federal Power-Shok 150 gr. I also have a box of Win Super X 180 gr. to try. Hopefully I'll be able to settle on one of these less expensive rounds!

Thanks for everyone's replies and congrats. Hopefully in the next few months I can post a better grouping!
