Ads with audio???

The following ad keeps popping up and plays a sound track.



I usually listen to SiriusXM on my iPad when I'm working the forum and this ad overrides Sirius and turns it off! This type of ad needs to go...

I did that multiple times this morning. The forum is also locking up if I have my VPN on.

I am a Bronze contributor, logged in, and getting VERY annoying ads with loud “music” (drums, clapping, etc).
This is a new problem, happening the past three days or so.

Music if that’s what you call it just started all of a sudden. Logged out and signed back in and now pop up adds. I guess it’s asking too much for the folks doing this to get a real job and leave us old people alone!

Surfshark went wonky on me earlier in the day until I allowed it an automatic choice of VPN protocol. It flat out would not connect to the remote site.

On a more serious note, Lee, the owner is trying to stop it. It is a problem with the ad vendor and while Lee could tell them they are fired, he would then have to shut down the forum because the ads pay most of the bills. So it amounts to cutting off your nose to spite your face. If you have a solution, I'm sure Lee would like to hear it.

Sounds like Mr Jarrett has the solution which was to contact the ad company. (Which is much appreciated). I do find it odd you like to hear people complain. I hate to hear people complain. To each his own I suppose. Anyway, thanks for addressing the issue

Maybe this is a good time to point out the benefits of being a contributing member?

I met Charlie Sides, a dedicated member of this forum who has sadly since passed away, and he greatly encouraged me to become a member. In fact, he gave me a good break on a deal to nudge me into using some of the saved funds to pay for a membership.
What a difference!

OK, so to be fair, I posted a comment above (#5) about the drums and clap track. But, this is a very rare instance!
Going (very nearly) ad free enhances my enjoyment of this great forum!

This is not a criticism, it is just an innocent question:

Why are these types of annoying ads not happening on other forums? Is it something about the software the forum uses? Is it something to do with ad vendors?
Honestly, I don't know how forums function, let alone do I grasp all the work that goes into running them.
It's just strange that these really annoying and noisy ads (they are still happening!) are unique to this forum.

PS: I can't imagine any business that creates or commissions these annoying ads really thinks it can help them. I look at who they are, what they sell, and tell myself:
"Thanks for the warning. You'll never get a nickel from me!"

I can't give you a definitive but perhaps an educated guess. Most other forums are probably better funded, as many are not privately owned but instead owned by larger corporate concerns. For example, I don't know of any auto/truck forums that aren't owned by a large firm centered in Toronto, Canada. Many gun forums are likely owned by a similar consortium. As a privately owned forum, there isn't the resources to pay for full time tech support to interface and work with the ad company on a full time basis.

The excellent digital camera website dpreview was started by a guy called Phil Askey. After some years Amazon made him an offer he could not refuse. Now that's what I call a boost in funding. The milsurp forum I frequent is part of a larger organization after a similar buyout of the original owners, although some of the "improvements" that resulted were not necessarily welcomed by the membership.
