I live in the Atlanta, Ga. area and I've grown accustomed to my state's relatively liberal gun ownership/carry/purchase laws. I have a carry permit, I find it easy to buy a gun when I want to, and am comfortable with Georgia's law allowing transport of firearms.

I may be moving to the Lambertville, NJ/Bucks County Pa. area in the near future. I gather that gun laws in NJ (especially) and Pa. may be more restrictive than what I'm used to down here. I'm aware that I need to acquire a license in order to purchase a gun in NJ and also a gun purchase permit for each handgun that I buy. Are there any other laws that I need to be aware of as a gun owner? For example, do I need to register the guns that I already own?

What about gun ownership laws in Pa.? What restrictions are there on handgun ownership/purchase in that state?

Also, are any of you aware of gun clubs and/or shooting ranges in the area that are open to the public or for which memberships may be purchased? And, finally, are there any problems with a NJ resident bringing his/her guns across state lines into Pennsylvania to shoot at a public range or gun club or vice versa?

Thanks!

PA! Our license to carry firearms is easy to get. PA is shall issue, so you'll get it. Open carry is legal with no license of any kind. No ammo capacity limitations or ammo regulations.

The only restriction when it comes to purchasing a handgun is that is has do be done through a FFL. Other than that no waits or permits to buy or anything. Long guns can be sold person to person though.

NJ, unless you know someone, you'll never have a carry permit here. Hollow points are legal in the box and at the range, never in a gun otherwise. Can only be transporting a gun to a range or hunting situation, and it must be the most direct route. In other words, don't stop for gas or anything else. You might get away with a gas stop, but not much else.
Registration is voluntary, sometimes it might save a hassle, but voluntary non the less.
Need an FID(firearms purchaser card), for any ammo that will fit in a handgun. Can't even touch a gun in the shop without one. Pistol permits, (to buy), are good for 90days but can be extended to 180days. Can ask for as many as you want when you pay the local cops for the papers. But it's one gun a month. $15 for a nics check - you know the one they're not supposed to charge for. Buy any long guns in PA, the Pics check they use is only $3.
15 rnd mags max, anymore in any caliber with or without the gun will get you busted. No bayonette mounts, pistol grip shotguns, collapsable stocks etc.
If you haven't been to this site, you should check the info there.

Pa laws are pretty good , the one thing that keeps it from being great is that ALL handgun sales must go through an FFL , even private party. Everything else is fine , permits are "shall issue" , no storage restrictions , no "one gun a month" , no ammo restrictions . Pa is an NFA class III state , full auto , silencer , SBS all OK, although getting the chief LEO signature to buy a machine gun in Bucks county may be challenging.

PA is a refreshing oasis *, NJ , MD ,Ohio and New York neighbors are all somewhat more restrictive.

* Except Philadelphia, there is nothing in any way refreshing about Philly, although we do have a State law to prevent any local govt from passing more restrictive firearm laws than State law, which is great because without it Philly would have a NYC type handgun ban by now, Philly is simply there to supply us with an endless stream of liberal politicians and consume about 1/3 of the state budget with no measurable results.

I am looking for a house in PA, I have had enough with NY gun laws and there taxes. Goto PA my friend.....

I come from that Lambertville, NJ/Bucks County, PA area. Expensive, just in case you didn't know, (they don't call it Bucks County for nothing! :D) but very nice.

Come to PA. It's easier and cheaper to live like a normal person.

PA's not bad, both more and less restrictive than Ohio in various ways.

Check out PAFOA for lots of good information on gun laws and carrying in PA.

Has Ohio changed their laws? As of last year there was nothing I know of restrictive about Ohio. I moved to NC and regret it. Here you need the FFL background check AND a permit from the local Sheriff.
