When people advertise revolvers with bobbed hammers as double action only are they considered DOA because of the bobbed hammer or are the internal parts different?

What I am getting at is: Could a gunsmith simply change out the hammer and make the gun double and single action?

Depends;
- Some have Factory S&W Spurless DAO hammers, NO SA Notch/Cut = DAO
- Some owners may have modified their original hammer to now be DAO with having the SA Notch/Cut removed, As well as the Hammer "bobbed" = DAO
- Some may consider it DAO as there is nothing to cock the hammer into SA, but only have "bobbed" the hammer. But, It may still retain the SA notch/cut. While I wouldn't recommend or do this: You could technically grab the top portion of bobbed hammer and still cock it into SA if the notch/cut is still there.

Simply: Yes, A gunsmith can change a DAO to DA/SA

Thanks spdgg, that is what I was hoping to hear. You see good deals on these modle 15's all over and I had thought about getting one and have the wrok done and possibly end up with a nice shooter.

Thanks again...

Don't discount double-action. Read Sixguns by Keith. It takes time and effort, but double-action, once learned, is a craft, and is effective in the extreme. That's how our guns were made to be shot.

+1! I'm old school on this one. If a person FIRST learns to shoot well with a double action gun (e.g. any traditional double action revolver), they can transition rather easily to any platform they may choose. Also, you just might surprise yourself by how rapidly you can manipulate that trigger after you've worked on basic skills for a while. And all that work will translate to other kinds of handguns.

I purchased a couple of DAOs from J&G. A Model 15 and a Model 67. Both hammers were missing the DA notch.

I found a couple of SA/DA hammers in the classified here on the forum. After I swapped the hammers, I put the 67 back to DAO - because I liked it so much. It was very impressive.

Here are some before and afters......

In my not so humble opinion, these are the only bargains out there right now.

That is exactly what I had in mind. I do not have the know-how to change the hammers but our local gunsmith is good with S and W's and is reasonable with his prices. He also has a ton of used parts.

My favorite gun to shoot is my model 15-3. It is still in new condition and I would like to keep it that way. I think I will buy one of J and G's.

Will a model 67 be the same gun as my 15-3 only stainless?

Have ya'll had pretty good luck with these J&G revolvers? I have thought about picking one up to start shooting SSR class with. For no real reason other then I think it would be fun and some good practice reloading and revolver handeling.
