I am putting this here in reloading as it would be a reloading item.

Yes. it's a Ruger, Super Redhawk, A little older one in like new condition in the grayish color stainless. Just came available up at the local shop.

I just got dies for a (new to me) 45 Colt M 25 so I could shoot those out of the gun also.

It's just such a formidable looking gun!. I really have no need for such a potent caliber (I have 44 Mags)

Surely someone here has one?

Just a "wow" kinda thing!:D

A little overkill for deer here in Florida............. but then again a .380 is overkill for deer in Florida

There are lots of guys here with .454's. I don't have one, but I do have a F/A .475 Linebaugh, which is sorta a big brother to it.

Before buying a Ruger, you should be aware that they have had problems with cases sticking in the chambers. It isn't a safety issue though. It's just the nature of the ss they use. It's a 465 carpenter series grade of ss, and it is springy by nature.

Brian Pearce has covered this issue several times now in Handloader. He talked to the Ruger tech, who in turn told him that was the way the metal behaved. It moves outwards under the high pressure, then springs back, which causes cases to be hard to extract some, if not all the time.

The .454 is quite a serious round, and will handle anything that walks.

I have a Freedom Arms Model 83 in 454 Casull. It is the finest single action revolver I have ever shot. However, they advise not to shoot 45 LC cartridges in the 454 Casull cylinder as it can cause hard extraction of the Casull cartridges. I assume their is some flame cutting at the end of the case. I reload the Casull case to much lower velocity for regular shooting. The 454 Casull is a handful in this revolver but I don't like large heavy revolvers like the S&W X-frame.

Just an FYI- it isn't because of any flame cutting issue, it's
because F/A chambers their guns to very tight tolerances which is good for the brass, but leaves little room for anything else to be in there and have the cases still exapnd properly. Too many people are lazy and don't bother clean the fouling ring left by the shorter round in the chambers when switching from .45 Colt to .454 ammo. Then when they fire the high pressure .454 loads, the brass can't expand and release the bullet properly, which can jack pressures sky high.
I got that straight from F/A.;)

I agree with you on the X frame though. It's just too awkward and heavy. I have all the power I can ever use with my F/A .475, and in a much more portable weight.

I can load up some pretty ridiculous 44 mag +P loads for my Redhawk if I'm really feeling the recoil itch. Those will more than scratch it for me. I would have to have a very specific need for a 454 to get one. Buying one "just because" seems like a waste of money to me. But of course it's your money.

Probably is a waste. I waiting to see an episode of Hoarders on TV and instead of junk or Cats, it guns!:D

I just really like the looks and feel of the gun.Mainly due to the gun metal gray finish.
No,I would not be hunting anything with it and the 44 Mag would suffice for that. Handun recoil doesn't bother me. Rifles do. I shot a friends 500 and didn't think it was any different than my 44 Mag, It also weighed a ton and was 8" or something.

Good way to clean the cylinders out is use a slightly flared longer case and tap it through to remove any carbon. I use that on my 44 Mag if I shoot any 44 Specials. It scrapes out the heavy stuff than a quick oversize brush and solvent gets the rest.

I gotta stay out of the store;)

There is something about the 454 that just attracts shooters.... I have a FA M83 and mine has an extra cylinder for 45 colt. I have to admit that the design of the FA M83 does as good a job at handling recoil of any revolver I've shot. For me though, its 98% medium to heavy 45 colt loads that go through the gun. What a great gun and caliber!

But you're all right, the 44 mag will handle any deer sized game with ease if you do your part.

But aren't these mostly for fun that we buy these "toys?" So what the heck.... Most likely you can't loose any serious money by having it for a while.

Not for the recoil sensitive :)

I gotta stay out of the store;)

It dont matter! There's the internet...and places like "Gunbroker."..etc...and ya see pics here and so on. I dont prowl the gunstores.....I "shop online" for something...THEN go and buy it locally. It saves me gasoline money...*S*

I bought the super redhawk Alaskan just because and love it. It can actually be used as a car gun with some of the good 45colt ammo.

It really gets attention on the range. Just for fun... load one 45 cowboy load followed by a heavy 45 colt then a light 454 and finally a heavy 454 and give it to a friend to shoot... with a fair warning...

Yep, they have one of those at the shop also. That is one hunk of metal!

Now those Freedom Arms cost some money, I looking at a used Ruger. So you quys are worse than me.:D

I've got a 454 BFR that's a real hoot to shoot, LOL. I don't down load for this revolver because it's darn accurate with full house loads and if you can shoot it without flinching you're better off getting all of the potential IMHO.
I agree that they aren't for the recoil sensitive. Best wishes and buy what makes you happy.:)

I always get a chuckle when someone says that these big bore handguns are way too much overkill for deer, then I see, or hear them talking about the 12 gauge 3" sabot slug they use every year for deer hunting.

OCD1- If you want one, that's reason enough to own one. You have any idea of how many .458 Winnies are owned in this country by people who will never even see anything bigger than a small deer, let alone hunt anything bigger?

Here's another one to temp you a little-

Mine's got ebony grips, V notch rear and gold bead front sight and replaceable forcing cone. I bought it when they only came in one model, what we now call premier grade.

I had them put sling mounts on it and I've got a scope and a T'SOB scope mount.

Just recently I posted about a new - for me - load of a 350g boolit and 22g W296. Got 'em loaded up and ready for action. :)

Get the Ruger! If the price is right, you've got nothing to loose.

snapping twig-
Can you post a pic of yours? I saw you mention it in the thread in the lounge.

I have the T'SOB mount, Warne rings, and a Leupold 2x EER. It all came on mine.

An old pic of it-

I am not a hunter. Used to bird hunt (doves and quail) when they were plentiful here. Development and habitat destruction took care of that and most of the fishing.:(
Of course there are always the feral hogs which we all know are armor plated and bullet proof:rolleyes: I see them when I go to our range, just on the other side of the fence in the WMA so I can't shoot one.

I just like handguns and this one is pretty nice. Have to sleep on it as there others on my short list, too many in fact.

If we waited until we needed one we wouldn't have one when we needed it! ;)

I have never bought a gun because I needed it. Plain and simple, I wanted it! ;)

Honesty, good for the soul!

I've got a 6" FA M-83 in .454 with an aux .45 Colt cylinder. With 325 gr lead LBT slugs at a mere 1150 fps it will penetrate through a mature elk from ANY angle. My wrist, elbow and shoulder are in bad shape so the full house .454 loads get zero use...too tough on me.

For deer, blk bear or even elk ....downloaded .454's will still do the job. Heck of a handloaders round...mild to wild.
