Bought my first semi-auto yesterday.
Drove 68 miles to an auction in Detroit, in the pouring freaking rain, auction was OUTSIDE(??!?!?!) & nothing but mud.
BUT.....I got what I went for. My new toy, S&W 9mm Model 5906. Paid a bit much, but she's basically new & came w/x2 15 round mags. Paid $440.
Me & old pops went right to the range from there. I ran 100 rounds through her w/NO issues. Man what a nice firing gun!
Best of all, she FEELS like a gun. I'm not one for the plastic. I like the feel of steel.
I would like to get a nice squishy grip for it though.Maybe 1 or 2 more mags....oh ****, I'm hooked.

$440 is about regular market value on the 5906 for LNIB w/2 mags. If you are looking at different grips I would warn you against Hogue's unless you have unusually large hands. Despite being softer, almost every review I have read indicates they are extremely large. I really like the feel of the Crimson Trace grips on my 5906, but they are certainly a very expensive alterative.

That looks like a K frame sitting with it, yes? You will love your 5906. It will shoot any kind of ammo you load and the trigger will smooth out after a while. My first ever handgun, bought new in 1989, was a 5906 w/adjustable sights. I still have it. Enjoy!

I miss my 5906 :(

I agree about the Hogues, I put some on for a short time and they were too big for me.

The hogue grips are larger than the standard grips on yours now, however judging by the picture your hands seem large enough to handle them. I put them on my 910 and they made a world of difference for me, they do take a bit of getting used to though as they are larger but so much softer and they absorb the recoil almost completely. Probably not for everybody but I like mine. Great looking semi you got there by the way, and congratulations!

ditto the remarks concerning after-market grips but as said it appears you have large enuff hands for a good hold on them.
and to diito the remark about the Crimson Trace a nephew has a 915, he (I) installed the CT on, and he's not a large fella but says these are more comfotable. must be as he shoots it plenty well enuff.

Congratulations! The 5906 is a fine way to start a semi-auto collection.

5906

I've had mine since '99 and love it! Mine was a used cop gun and was in great shape..Shoots good, never had a jam. It's my home defense weapon of choice. Enjoy yours.

Glad to hear you like the new gun.
I went to buy a 4006 and the owner also had a 5906, so I got that too, couldn't be happier.
I'm sold on the 3rd gen S&W autos!

:D:confused: lol.....I "suppose" ? I've been away from handguns since I was 14 years old. Now 42, I just got back into it w/my pops (ret LEO) and a few buddies. I don't frequent the bar, so this was my latest hobby choice...and loving it, though wife thinks I'm ridiculous.
I've always shot the .357 Magnums,ALWAYS enjoyed the intensity.. SO, the black model 19 was a gift to me from Pops(last shot when I was 14), the S/S model 66 is an auction win from September so my 19 had a younger brother :)

My wish list..:D........a Walther PK22, .380 S&W (or Walther) and for rifles, the new M&P15-22
I was warned it would be an addiction.
Great., so now what do I do?

I have the regular S&W grips on my 6906 and the Hogues on my 4006. The Hogues are thicker, but nice if your hands are large enough.

5906

I was so lucky to fall into a 5906 and it has changed my gun habbit. Where I work we talk to a bunch of customers everday and I happened to ask a customer if he had anything to sell. He stated he had a 9mm to sell so I said bring it over I will take it. I had never even held a hand gun before, bought it on site. A perfect 5906 with 3 mags, it shoots so nice. When I had a chance to purchase a 3906 I had to jump at it. I am trying to get all of the 09 series guns. They are so great to shoot, Love them...

Nice 5906. And no you did not pay too much. In California the 5900 series goes for around $500. I have the 5903 which is the alloy frame with stainless slide. I love it. Best semi-auto I have. Any I love your K frame. I have several myself.

Happy shooting,
Howard

CDNN in Texas is selling 5906 police turn in's (according to CDNN rep on the phone) for $299.99 my brother just got his, fixed sights with hogue grips some fine holster wear scratches, round triggerguard. I urged him to buy it since I love mine with the fully adjustable sights and squared off trigger guard and metal "ears" that protect the fully adjustable sights, I don'believe mine was ever a police issue gun because I bought it from a private seller and it has very little finish wear from holsters and handling. I shoot 3 gun with mine and when my brother wanted a semi auto he shared my disdain for plastic guns so I suggested a 5906, he got it last week and shot it and loves it like I love mine.

you might want to check on the 'squishy' grips unless you have XXXLarge hands.
I have XXL and the std factory grips are just fine. - I sort of wish the checkering was coarser though.
that's about the best 9mm to be made in America IMO. good pistol.
