Howdy all!

New to the forum, but not to S&W's. :)

I currently own a S&W 4006 .40 cal semi-auto and am wearing it for concealed carry. Needless to say, it's a full size semi-auto and it's a bit bulky to try and carry/conceal.

So, I was considering looking for another firearm that was smaller. I wanted to stay with the .40 cal since I always used that with my duty weapons and such and love the caliber. Since I also like my S&W, I figured I'd look into another one. So, I'm considering looking into a M&P .40 cal Compact, but I can't seem to find anyone that has one. :(

Seems like whether I check at any local stores or anywhere online no one seems to have them in stock. Are these weapons a myth now or what? Is there some sort of backorder on these weapons due to a recent recall/problem that I haven't heard about? There is a gun show coming up in the next couple of weeks and I was going to check it out in hopes to maybe see one there. I don't need one ASAP, so I'm not going to pay a high price just to get one, so if I have to wait, I guess I'll have to wait.

I'm also trying to find a decent deal on one, (if I can even find one) as well. If anyone has any suggestions on where to look (online or in the Las Vegas area), it would be greatly appreciated.

The problem is, I was hoping to try one out at one of my local ranges to see how it feels in my hands. I don't have overly big mitts, but I'm just afraid of the compact being too small in my hands and really throwing me off since I've never shot or carried a compact firearm before. I've always carried full framed semi-autos like my 4006 (and a Glock 22 and a Beretta M9/92FS).

So, I guess I'm afraid of forking out $500 and finding out I can't shoot the weapon for c**p because it's too small in my hands.

Again, any help or info would be greatly appreciated. :)

Have a great day!

Have you checked Bud's Guns-looks like they have some in stock?

Jetguns.com also has them at $455.

It's my understanding that the 9mm and the .40 cal. use the same size frame so shoot the 9mm at a range if you can't find a .40 cal.

Carnage - Thanks for the tip. I have never purchased a firearm online before, so wasn't too sure where to look. I just did a general Google search and the few places I saw were all out. I don't think I checked there.

My understanding is you have to set up the deal with a local FFL dealer that charges you a transfer fee, plus the background check fee and then a Brady law fee. Plus shipping in most cases. After all of those charges, that might end up being more than me just purchasing it locally and paying sales tax. That's what I'm trying to figure out. That and if a local store can order it vs me getting one online now and having it shipped.

Mittenzon - Love the screen name as I'm originally from MI. :) I'll have to check them out as well. The lower the initial price the better, considering all the transfer fees and stuff that get added on. :(

I forgot about the 9MMc frame being the same. I'll have to call around and see if anyone has either compact to shoot or at least hold/see (but would MUCH rather shoot) and go from there. Thanks for the tip. :)

I bought my M&P 40c Talo Edition about 2 months ago and just love it! I am a large guy at 6'3" with XL hands and with the large back strap it fits very well. That was one reason that I bought it was because I could customize the fit to my big hands. I am very happy with it.
I bought mine from my local dealer, Guns and Leather in Hendersonville, TN. Great place. The Talo Edition comes with a two magazines, a 10 round & a 15 round one with the slide on finger grip, as well as a bit of trigger work to make it very smooth.

Sarge - Thanks for the heads up! That's definitely a site I can use. :D Unfortunately it looks like they are out of them right now, but it looks like I can get a M&P40c w/night sights for less than what I can get one locally w/standard sights.

That looks like something worth waiting for. Now I'll just have to find out what FFL around here is willing to do this type of transfer and what fees are involved with doing this type of transaction. I think one of the online sites (maybe Buds? I can't remember) had a link/list that I could look up of local dealers (anywhere in the US actually) and even had their fees listed with their info, so I could get a general sense of how much the total would be. Anyway, thanks for the link.

Steve H. - Thanks for your input as well. I'm only 5'7", so I don't have really big hands, but I do like the customizable grips on it as well. Plus, I've already read on here that some people have actually put a small amount of flooring tape on their grips to help them out if needed. Of course, I'd wait to see if that was absolutely necessary, but at least it's a possible option.

I think on Monday I'm going to call all the local ranges to see if anyone has either the 40c or the 9c and get in there and shoot one of them just to get a feel of it in my hand after a couple of rounds. I have a feeling I'm going to really like the firearm.

Only bad thing is, I just ordered a Crossbreed Supertuck Deluxe for my 4006 the other day and if I end up getting the M&P40c, I probably won't need it any longer, so it might end up being wasted money. :(

All the M&Ps' seem to be in short supply, and it doesn't really help that they make so many versions. You'll see a great advertised price on one model and when you go to order one they seem to be out of stock. I wouldn't get rid of your holster yet, depending on how tight a fit it is on your 4006 it just might work for the M&P. But I would imagine the weight difference alone will cause you to go with the M&Pc. One other option for larger hand people is the use of the full size mag and the X-Grip adaptor, gives you basicly the full size grip frame on the compact.

I just purchased and received an M&P40c from Bud's Gun Shop. Very manageable and accurate little pistol. This one is a keeper.

Wife picked one out in 40 cal. for her ccw and it fits her hand perfect as for me I am 6'4" and it is a bit small. however when I hold on to the trigger guard with my left finger as I hold it it works out fine.
After polishing the feed ramp by hand very slowly until I could see my reflection, and cleaned the firing pin assembly which came dirty from factory this gun never missed a beat.
Very Very accurate. Very snappy but that's normal for a light high Cal. gun.
It is fun to shoot if that is what you want it for.
Get the gun it is rock solid

Handgunner - Exactly...seems like almost no one has them. I got lucky and found one locally so I could at least hold it and get a feel for the gun. I liked it with the "second mag" in it (the one with the small finger extension on it). I don't know if I'd like it with the "flat bottomed" mag in the gun though. I think it will feel weird to me to wrap my pinky underneath the gun. So, I think I'll like the weapon. However, that store wanted a bunch of money for the weapon, so I think it'll be worth going through one of the online options and waiting for the backorder to clear (supposedly they'll have the one I want on 4/13 & that's when I'll have the money for it, so it will work out nicely). If I get the .40c, I'll have to check it in the kydex holster of the Crossbreed Supertuck Deluxe. It would be great if I could truly use the same holster for either weapon (.40c or the 4006). But I'm sure the .40c will become my main carry weapon, as that's why I'm looking into it. :D

SiGfever - I appreciate the info. Looks like another positive review for the .40c. :D

Jerry - I appreciate the info. Like I was saying above, I finally found one locally so I could fit it in my hand and I actually liked the way it fits with the finger extension mag that comes with the gun. So, I would just end up buying another finger extention mag when I can and then I'd be happy. :) I figured that it would probably be a bit snappy, but as you said, that will be normal for a polymer .40 cal. However, since I'm used to a .40 cal in my 4006, it shouldn't be that much of a shocker to me.

What did you use to polish your feed ramp? I might look into doing that with my 4006 in the mean time. :D Also, did the manual that came with the .40c show you how to clean the firing pin? Or did you have to do something special to disassemble the weapon to get to it, so that you could clean the firing pin?

Again, I appreciate the help from everyone. I love it when you can find kick azz sites like this where people are interested in helping others. Very cool.

Hey Demon - When you get around to picking up a finger ext. on your extra mag, give S&W (1-800) cust service a call first. They sent me (and others on this forum) a FREE (I love that word) one when I called and (nicely) requested it.

Don't even give "snappiness" of your 40c a second thought while you're shooting. Just practice, practice...and, believe me, "snappy" will NOT be what you will be feeling or thinking about after you're done shootin'. :D

So, I take it that the foot/finger ext is replacable on the mags? I know on my current 4006 mags, I can push the indent button on the bottom of the mag and slide the "foot" off my mag and replace it if need be. So, if it's the same with the .40c mag, then I'll definitely be "nice" and request it from S&W and put that on the 2nd mag that they send w/the gun. I truly appreciate the tip! I didn't even think about doing that! :o Heck, I'd even be nice enough to send the flat foot back to them if they wanted it. LOL

I'm sure I'll just be thrilled with having the .40c! Sounds like a very nice firearm from what I've been reading here in the forum and a lot of people seem to like the M&P compacts in general (.40/9mm/.45), so I don't think I can really go wrong with it. It felt really nice in my hand when I was checking it out the other day. I'm really not worried about the recoil on it. I have a feeling it will be on par with my 4006 and my original G22 that I had. The hard part right now is just waiting for them to come in at the online store and me to have the money in a couple of weeks. :p LOL

Yes, the finger extension on the 40 mags are easily replaceable.

Do a google search of Hickok45 and then do a S&W M&P 40c search on his site if you want to see someone giving a used 40c a pretty good work out. He also does some shooting comparisons between polyguns made by Glock, S&W, Ruger and Springfield.

Hickok 45 has an excellent 30 min video comparing the M&P 40c and the Glock 27. The video can be found at: YouTube - hickok45's Channel

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your help.

I ended up ordering a .40 compact yesterday. :D

Now I'm just waiting on my darn FFL that I found on GunBroker.com to send his license to the dealer so they can ship out the firearm. I didn't hear back from him yesterday, so now I'm starting to regret my choice of FFL and should have gone with one of the local dealers (actual store/shop) instead...

Now I just have to decide whether or not to call that other dealer and have them send their FFL to get things rolling & get the firearm shipped out and then email the original guy back and say forget it or not...

I feel bad going back on someone after I already set something up, but when you emailed them before and they helped you out and then you tell them you will end up using them and then you email them with the pertainent info and don't hear from them for a full day after that...hmmmm...

Maybe I'm just not being patient enough. :p
